very good! i'm glad to see so many responses today!

angel, i'm glad you found your book!

bio, i also think that is a very cool idea for you to be reading to each other. kudos to your dh!

sal , i'm sure you'll get caught up with no problem .

T2S, good girl for spending some time with the book and getting up to speed.

sunny, you have some hurdles to jump over as the woe progresses but you seem to be doing just fine. things might be slow but progress is progress!

caryl, we got the rest of the week and sunday for part 1. you'll do fine getting it all read.

elffriend, i'm always glad to read the someong has better numbers after being on atkins. it's just another confirmation of how good this woe is for us.

it looks like most or all of us considered ourselves in the B catagory. interesting...............

i'll be starting chapter 5 today and hopefully getting chapter 6 in too. i hope the fill in the blanks homework is helping everyone to concentrate better on what's being said. you have to keep your eyes peeled for the parts so maybe things are sinking in better. at the very least, we might remember where some of the facts are located in the book.

make it a good low carb, book reading day! and don't forget to report when you have part 1's homework done!

I've finished Part I and filled in the blanks. It's been good to go back and get the overview of what following the program can accomplish if I follow the rules. The thing I love about this WOL is that Dr. Atkins does not just tell us what to do, he tells us WHY it works and backs it up with documented research. I admit I have not read many other diet books, but is there any other one that does this?

Once we get into actually doing Atkins, we start focusing on the details and quibbling about whether this or that is legal. The answer is usually "The book says ...." It begins to sound like dogmatic unthinking rhetoric. When we remind ourselves of the big picture, we can see that the details are not dogma, but carefully thought out steps to get us successfully to our goals.

It is also interesting to see that in the years since the book was published, none of the principles Dr. Atkins based this plan on have been disproven despite what seems like a concerted effort by some in the medical/nutritional establishment to do so.

good deal, brandywine! i've got you marked for getting your part 1 homework done, along with Elffriend.

i couldn't agree more with your statement concerning how things are written. i don't understand all the why's of how this works but i'm glad they are there. i can't answer the question concerning if other diets explain things. i may be one in a million but i just have not been on dozen of diets, therefore i've not really read about them. i saw nothing being offered that i felt an urgency to do either because of the cost (meals and meetings) or they just didn't look appetizing (cabbage soup diet).

i've finished up chapter 5 and 6 today. i made note of two things.
one was the statement about the "triad". meaning this woe, exercise and nutritional supplements. i'm thinking of a 3 legged stool. take one of the legs off and the stool won't stand. i've seen many members who try to take off one of the legs and atkins just isn't designed to work that way.

another note i made concerns page 61 and how the body suppresses hungry and your appetite will diminish after only 48 hours.

i'm underlining things in my book (stuff that wasn't underlined before). one of the things i've underlined in chapter 6 is this
[quote]The interesting thing is that, if they adhere to the four phases of my program, .................{/quote) this was in reference to the question directly before it "..... but don't they gain it right back again?"
imho, "if" and "adhere" are two very important words in that sentence.

Well, I did my homework today. It's so interesting to me. Everything in this book is important, of course. The questions for this week are true and what a true atkineer knows deep in their core. It's how I live my life, yet when I did the homework it was as profound as if I read it for the first time!

Boy I've grown up I guess. I used to hate homework!

i've answered the chapter title question, IS THERE A METABOLIC ADVANTAGE?

                    YES!

I must say I agree 100% there is a metabolic advantage. I didn't lose on 1200 calories on higher carb but I can lose on 1800 Low carb calories.

I read at lunch today. It's like I thought--I'm part B and part C. I do have quite a few food allergies and am totally addicted to chocolate. I've also had problems with ice cream and chips in the past. I still really can't handle the low-carb ice cream. If it's in the house, I have to eat it. ALL--at one sitting. So, I don't buy it. It also causes me sinus problems. Chips don't bother me anymore. I find that surprising, but I'm extremely grateful. I can buy chips for the kids' lunches and it doesn't bother me at all to totally ignore them. After reading this again, I've decided I really need to give up ALL chocolate. I had at one time, but have allowed myself some here and there and now it's more than it should be.

I remember the symptoms for B that I used to have--mood swings, bouts of fatigue, brain fog, and the anxiety especially. SO glad that is all so much better now. My blood sugar was high when I started this WOE, so I guess it would make sense.

I am so glad there's a metabolic advantage and I can eat until I'm full. I don't have that starving feeling I used to get when I tried other diets. And, I must admit that I totally agree with what Dr Atkins said about staying on Atkins just because I feel so much better than I did before.

I'm about half-way done with this week's homework, so guess I'd best read a little more tonight.

I finished my reading and my homework last night ........... I have to admit I had to go back and "find" the answers because I couldn't remember what went in the blanks with out scanning back through and looking ......... just another proof that I need to be reading it often to keep things fresh.

I saw my self in two catagories A and B not sure if thats possible to be both of those because one talks about binge eating and eating all the time and one talks about not eating nearly as much as the average person yet still gaining .......... and I see myself in both of those places .......... when I'm not "dieting" I tend to eat all day to keep my sugar levels constant but when I have tried traditional diets I find that I can eat the same amount or less then everyone else and either not lose or actually gain weight doing it .........I'm weird I guess ......... probably my thyroid has alot to do with it as well.

Anyways I also thought it was neat Jimmie that you mention underlining things because this time I have spent my reading time with a highlighter My pages glow!!!!!!! LOL I guess I could just soak the book in highlighter ink and that would be easier.

The next weeks reading is quite a bit longer so I might get started on some of that today .......

Thanks for doing this I needed to refocus again.

it's good to come in here in the morning and see the comments.

heidi, good work getting your part one homework done. yes, part two is the lengthy one and i'd say, if reading time is a problem for anyone, you might want to get a jump start on it.

caryl, i'm always amazed and very proud when i see members that have medical issues or problems that makes it harder for them to lose. it's great to know that even if there are hurdles are get over, this woe can certainly work. it might be at a slower pace but weight loss ... permanent weight loss.... can be achieved!

T2S... i guess i should call you michelle now. i think it's the most popular name on the board right now.
anyway, i couldn't agree more. there are so many examples that Dr Atkins gave us of people eating higher calories/low carbs that had such success. we're all proof of how this can work.

i hope to finish up part one today. i'll check in when/if that happens. yep, even the leader has to do her homework.

As I was reading through the "A"s, I thought almost everyone of them applied to me - due to my thyroid shutting down. But then I read the "B"s, and boy most of them applied too! I need to remember that I was fat when I was a young woman at times too - long before my thyroid stopped working. So it's good to get that reinforced by reading this - the reason that I'm heavy right NOW is complex - and I need to consider it from ALL angles.

i love seeing how y'all have your thnking caps on.

i've finished part one and got the homework all wrapped up for this part. not too many notes today. i underlined and starred a mess of stuff but i won't repeat all that here.
however, i've written out FIBER IS GOOD on my paper and that our primary source of fiber during induction is from veggies.
psyllum husks and flaxseed meal are two things we always see being recommend for constipation. we should also note that coarse wheat bran is on the list too. lets not forget our 64 oz of water at a mimimum!
two things that really jumped out at me this time was the repeating of Glucose being used up in 48 hours. it's been mentioned no less than 3 times during part 1. page 99, page 94 and page 61. whenever you see something repeated, it usually means it's pretty important.
the second thing was the statement about cancer cells feeding off of sugar. well is there any doubt of the corelation of the sugar epidemic and the increase of cancer in this country?

i'm working on a cute little chart for everyone. complete the homework and you'll get a smiley face which i so handily borrowed from the 6 WEC. i'll post the results, hopefully, on saturday.
