i took it pretty slow when i did atkins correctly. even when i didn't do it correctly i went slower with adding things in. i think many people do for a couple reasons. one, they are afraid of stalling or not losing any more at all and two, they really want to experiment with different foods on each rung and sometimes, a week or two isn't enough. i think you are fine going slower.

      Week Two:
      1. Read chapter 14. When you finish reading the chapter, post your assignment 'done' or 'finished'.
      Done Sunday

      2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance? Lack of enough exercise, medication, age, gender, activity level etc. For me I have the dual problem of not enough exercise and medication complications.

      3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why? I am considering moving up but may wait a while til hubby gets here. The first time round I fouond starchy veggies (potatoes) and grains were the worst for me. Right now I don't miss either and may never add then back in.

      4. What is the carb count you are to add per level? We are to add 5 grams of carbs at each level. If counting net carbs then add 5 grams net carbs, if counting total carbs then add 5 grams total carbs. Depending on the number you have been counting in Induction that is the number to which you add the 5 grams of carbs, eg,- 18 grams add 5 grams = 23 grams total, or counting 20 grams add 5 grams = 25 grams.

        good morning challengers!

i'm appreciating the work being done by the few but the assignments are slacking off for many. the next couple questions for answering will be posted in a few minutes. after that, there might be only one more question to go and then work will finish up with an award for those who did the assignments and did them in a timely manner.

if you have questions or comments, lets hear 'em.

        make it a good day!

          5. At what point will you no longer show color on a ketostix?
at 50 grams of carbs. chapter 14, Ongoing Weight Loss, page 172 [in my book] "....you should be aware that once you are consuming 50 or more grams of carbohydrates a day, the LTS will no longer register a change in color. " this does not mean you aren't losing! you'll just be losing at a slow rate which is what you according to the plan.

          6. How do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.
skip it, go to the next rung, i did skip the alcohol rung so the 5 carbs didn't get added in at all. i simply added 5 carbs of legumes.
          7. What is one way to increase your CCLL?
exercise. i don't really hate stressing this point because Dr. Atkins didn't mind repating it. we don't have to run marathons or do 3 hours a day but he says to get moving, do something, be active.

            2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance? Age, sex, activity level, medications, hormones.

            3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why? I'm on rung 7 although it's more like pre-maintenance because I'm only losing less than a pound a week. Rung 3, seeds and nuts, was the hardest because I just can't get enough once I start eating them and my major problem is that my DH buys big bags of them at Sam's Club and keeps them everywhere, even in the cars. The temptation is always there but I try to avoid them. I don't ever want to go on to rungs 8 and 9 because those are the foods that got me here to begin with!

            4. What is the carb count you are to add per level? "Each week you'll go up another level, adding another 5 gram increment until eventually you'll reach a number at which you stop losing". Page 171.

I read somewhere, but can't find it now, that when you skip a rung, you should spend the weeks you would have spent on the new rung, on the rung you are currently on.

                    7. Read chapter 11. Post a sample INDUCTION menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner using the ACCEPTABLE FOODS and provide the carb count. Do not use the sample in the the book and be as specific as you can. For example, state 1/2 cups, whole cups, ounces, etc. These can be actual menus that you have used or made up menus. Counting all the carbs or just net carbs, either way works for this assignment.

                    Breakfast (1.3)
                    2 fried eggs (1.2), 3 slices of bacon (0.1)

                    Lunch (4.
                    1.5 cup spinach (0.3), chicken breast (0.0), 1/2 avocado (1.7), 1/2 cup mushrooms (1.4), 1 ounce cheddar cheese (0.4), 2 tbsp ranch dressing (1.0)

                    Snack (5.9)
                    1/2 cup pumpkin (4.1), 1 ounce cream cheese (0., 1 packet Splenda (1), 1 tbsp cinnamon

                    Dinner (2.
6 ounces ground beef (0), 2 ounces cheddar cheese (0., 1 cup cucumber slices (2.0) marinated in vinegar (0.0)

                    Snack (1.0)
                    4 oz tuna (0.0), 2 tsp dijon mustard (1.0)
                    TOTAL NET CARBS ~ 15.8

                    8. Nitrates.... why did Dr. Atkins prefer us to use nitrate free bacon, ham, etc.?
pg. 124, nitrates are known carcinogens.

                    9. Are there any other points or comments you would like to discuss concerning Induction?
As in the beginning, I'm just amazed at all the great food that you can eat for your body.

I will catch up with the rest tonight!

                      1. Read chapter 14. When you finish reading the chapter, post your assignment 'done' or 'finished'. done when assigned

                      2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance? Age, gender, activity level, hormone issues, level of physical activity & prescription meds.
                      * My issue is exercise & not being consistant. I am perimenopausal & beginning to experience some issues.

                      3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why? I am currently on my 2nd week of Induction. I had previously been on Rung 4~~berries. I don't think that any of the food was an issue~~the issue was me. This journey is truly is an emotional one & has really made me deal with "things" that contributed to using food as a means of stuffing down anger along with frustration & also comfort.

                      4. What is the carb count you are to add per level? 5 gram increments per week per Rung. As I did previously I will spend more than 1 week per Rung.

                      5. At what point will you no longer show color on a ketostix? 50 or more grams of carbs. Ketostix stops registering @ 50 grams of carbs. Per Dr. Atkins as long as you continue to lose weight & inches & don't experience pre-Atkins hunger, cravings & other symptoms then no worries as you are still burning fat.

                      6. How do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.Skip the rung & proceed with the next rung. Thank goodness for the experience of members & their willingness to share their knowledge of OWL as it can be a bit confusing.

                      7. What is one way to increase your CCLL? MORE EXERCISE!!

                        2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance?

The usual suspects: hormones, age, medication, supplements and exercise in that not enough of one or too much of another can add to the metabolic resistance.

                        3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why?

I haven't ever gone beyond induction. But I will be skippng over the cheese rung (dairy allergies), anticipate problems with alcohol, and just not sure about starching veggies.

                        4. What is the carb count you are to add per level?

5 carbs or 5 net carbs, per our previous discussion.

Dr. A. says they'll stop turning color "at a point a little bit below your CCLL," at which point your CCLL will only be a few additional carb grams higher. But he also pointed out that once you're consuming 50 grams or more, the ketostix won't register a color change, which isn't a problem as long as you're still losing pounds/inches (plateaus aside).

                              6. How do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.
Don't drink alcohol, then ... and move up a rung

                              7. What is one way to increase your CCLL?
No getting around the "E" word ... exercise! Just move more, in general. Take the stairs. Park that car way in the back and walk. Really put some juice into the housework ... it isn't going away, either, so you might as well turn it into a workout!
