      1. Read chapter 14. When you finish reading the chapter, post your assignment 'done' or 'finished'. Done..

      2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance?
Your age, sex, amount of exercise, hormones can play a role, and medications can also affect your metabolism.

      3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why?

I haven't had any problems with any of the rungs. I loved it when I was able to add veggies in rung 1, and am loving the berry rung as they seem to have an excellent effect on my rate of loss. I would not KNOW that berries seem to be a wooshie food for me, if I had not been adding foods in carefully and slowly.

      4. What is the carb count you are to add per level?

5 carbs worth of the new food.

      5. At what point will you no longer show color on a ketostix?

When you have reached a carb level that keeps you from spilling enough ketones. Generally, they won't register if you are eating 50 or more carbs a day.

      6. What do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.

You can skip rungs. I am also not going to be doing the alcohol rung.

      7. What is one way to increase your CCLL?

Get more exercise! A regular exerciser will have a higher CCLL.

        5. At what point will you no longer show color on a ketostix?

At roughly 50 grams of carbs. However, there are some threads on this site that talks about the sticks not showing any color change due to solid exercising. So one may be in ketosis but the stick won't reflect it.

        6. How do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.

Just move on to the next rung. I'll be doing that with cheese and probably alcohol...maybe...we'll see. I was going to commit here earlier to passing up on the alcohol and am already having second thoughts.

        7. What is one way to increase your CCLL?

THe more physical activity one does, the higher the CCLL may go. Also, if there are different meds that were needed due to weight issues, the weight loss may also mean not needing those meds and a person's CCLL may increase with that.

            good day, challengers!
i have one last assignment for you. today, i would like you to spend just a couple minutes writing out where you see yourself in 3 months [after the holidays].

this will be the last assignment but maybe the most important one of all.

i would hope that in 3 months that i would be a more clear minded about my weight and the issues that are contributing to the extra pounds. exact numbers on the scale have not been so much the concern at present, other major issues are and have been the priority.

but having said that, i hope to be no heavier than i am right now. i hope to be maintaining. i hope the fluctuations are stabalized.

this woe, this low carb lifestyle is a part of me and i foresee no changes in that.

i don't forsee any problems concerning dinners, if there are family get togethers. they have not posed any problems, foodwise, for me the last 2 years.

In 3 months, Jo, I hope to be at my goal weight (140 lbs.), or at least close to it ... then comes the hard part: Maintenance. But I 've felt so much better since I've been doing Atkins that I can't even fathom wanting to return to my wicked, wicked ways! I'm not even worried about holiday temptations; I've already got Thanksgiving dinner planned out: Roasted turkey breast, mashed cauliflower (with BUTTAH!), a sugar-free cranberry jello salad, and a lovely pumpkin custard ... nom nom Of course, it's just me and my husband ... I can imagine family dinners are much more of a challenge. But I'm psyched!

Only one person can take full responsibility for my health, and that would be me. I'm pushing 60 and no longer take good health for granted (especially as one of many uninsured Americans!). So I look forward to being a faithful Atkineer, with WOE/exercise/supplements my daily mantra for the duration.

However, on my death bed, I wish to be propped up and fed a generous portion of devil's food cake and champagne

                  1. Read chapter 14. When you finish reading the chapter, post your assignment 'done' or 'finished'.
                  Done on Wednesday.

                  2. What are some of the things that will influence your metabolic resistance?
pg. 172 "As I've mentioned before, metabolic resistance is influenced by age, gender, activity level, hormone issues, level of physical activity, prescription medications and other factors, so the range in CCLLs can be great."

                  3. Review the CARBOHYDRATE LADDER. If you have already started adding levels [or rungs as they are commonly referred to] which level has been shown to cause the most problems for you and why?
Too much cheese definitely slows me down! I can't go over the Induction level of 4 oz. for both weight loss and self control reasons. However, nuts and nut butters don't appear to affect my weight loss as long as I'm in my allotted carb count. My CCLL is 35.

                  4. What is the carb count you are to add per level?
5 grams per week no more than 3 times per week or if you still have a lot of weight to lose after Induction, add carbohydrates very slowly, staying for two or more weeks at each 5-gram increment level. pg. 177

                  5. At what point will you no longer show color on a ketostix?
pg. 172. "However, you should be aware that once you are consuming 50 or more grams of carbohydrates a day, the LTS will no longer register a change in color."

                  6. How do you proceed if you are skipping level or rung? For example, if you don't drink any type of alcohol, how do you proceed when getting to the alcohol rung.
Skip it and move onto the next rung.

                  7. What is one way to increase your CCLL?
Exercise! It is essential for those with high metabolic resistance.

                  8. Spend just a couple minutes writing out where you see yourself in 3 months [after the holidays].
I feel in the last few months that I've been doing Atkins correctly, I've gotten a healthy perspective on food. In 3 months, I'd like to have figured out how often I need to weight myself so that I don't get upset and are negatively affected yet the weight still motivates me to workout.

I also hope to be within 5 pounds of my goal weight but I know I have high metabolic resistance so as long as I've been consistent with the plan, I'll be happy.

Thank you so much for this challenge! I'm very excited about being able to read through everyone's answers for continued education and inspiration!!!

I see myself at least at goal. Maybe even some bonus pounds lost in there.

I see myself in the store buying all the marked down beautiful clothes that I would never bother to go trying on before because I hated to lug my fat but to the mall to check things out!

I see myself probably in the "#7 fruits other than berries and melons" rung. ( I like to move slowly.)

I see myself as the me I remember before carrying around so much extra weight that I was miserable!

I see myself proud to be me! Finally!

                      Thank you for this challenge!

Where do I see myself in three months... I would hope I have moved on to OWL. I am considering moving up but want to wait until hubby is on a dedicated induction. I will be looking forward to buying some clothes which fit better. As far as the holidays go I will be very careful wnat I eat.

Thanks for this challenge it has been interesting.

i have one last assignment for you. today, i would like you to spend just a couple minutes writing out where you see yourself in 3 months [after the holidays].

this will be the last assignment but maybe the most important one of all.
First, I have to say thank you for this challenge. Timing is everything and I happen to notice this challenge in Sherri's journal about the time I was getting desperate about my health and weight. This has really helped me get more focused and determined again.

Second, I LOVE reading the others' responses on here. (The "devil's food cake and champagne" wish was a hoot!) You folks are giving me more to think about and shoot for. What a great group we have on this site!

Ok, we're talking about towards the end of January. One of the main things I'm trying to do is develop lifetime habits. Working out regularly nearly every day, including going for walks in sub-zero weather. (I did that for a couple weeks one winter years ago and the weight just dropped off!) Cutting coffee/caffeine out forever. Have a solid handle on my menus: what's allowed and how much, with slow changes as I work up the ladder. And know exactly what foods cause any allergic reactions in me.

Health-wise: Getting my blood pressure down. It's been on-and-off high since the surgeries last year. Not sure if it's related to the continual calcium problem but the extra weight sure isn't helping! Get rid of enough weight for the knees and back not to be paining anymore, and be able to stand and walk for hours at a time, instead of only minutes. Even daring to dream of being able to do a very light jog or even a sloppy kick-boxing. And being able to do some pretty solid weights and and start getting the arms back into shape again. Gaining a boatload of flexibility would be REALLY nice!

Size-wise: 230 pounds and into size 22 again. That would be a very nice start!... Scratch that. Going for the gold. 222 was the lowest I got on Atkins years ago. I want to get beyond that one! (And one more to edit in!) No more hanging stomach!! LOL!!! ... Oh! And something else! Slimmer legs and ankles!

Prayers up for no new health issues! For everyone here!
