I finished part 4!! I've had a very busy week and am taking a class on top of all of my regular stuff so I haven't taken the time to comment on section 4 yet. I'll be in class all day tomorrow, so wanted to make sure I got my reporting done. I guess the thing that really sticks out now that I've read the whole thing and I wish I had read sooner was all of the testing I was supposed to do BEFORE starting. I get physically ill if I don't eat regularly now that I'm on Atkins. I had a sinking feeling that means something bad. I can't bear to go off Atkins for a week though to get a glucose tolerance test done.

Hi HappyMom, just wondering why you feel you'd have to go off Atkins for a week to do a GTT. You just need to fast for 12 hours, then you have your "drink", then you'll have to sit there for a few hours and then they will check your blood (not necessarily in that order ). I wasn't told by the doctor that I'd have to stay at the lab after my drink, so I didn't have a book or my knitting to do while I waited, just the magazines to read. But just talk to your doctor, tell him you've changed your eating habits to more healthy ones, but still want the GTT done. It's a good reference to have. I actually had to insist, citing my mother as a diabetic, and my brother as a pre-diabetic. (both type 2 and food related for sure), before my doctor would agree!

Hey Jimmie, as far as my reading, I'm done...officially, that is, but as I said before, I keep going over sections again and again, flipping backwards, when something he writes rings a bell with me. I have 5 markers in my book right now, one at Induction (p.110), one at OWL (p150), one at metabolic resistance (p223), one at Exercise (p.24, one at Yeast (p.291), and one at Food and Recipes (p324), sorry that's 6! I find information that I copy into emails for my son. I just wish he would read the book, but he's in school, so he won't.

I want to thank you for doing this challenge, I enjoyed reading the book again. (and again) I've got my 2 sisters hooked now and my brother and his wife are keeping tabs on me (us) to see how we're doing. I know my sisters bought the book, but my brother hasn't (yet). If I can prove with our results that it does work, and it's not all bacon and butter, maybe my brother will get on board as well.

Well, I can't believe it almost 11:30!! I'm going to bed. I will not be putting my book away! It stays on the kitchen counter where I can refer to it when I need to. Have a good sleep everyone!

              Chapter 26, Food Intolerances

Interesting but I have special dietary restrictions already due to my IC issues. Did an elimination diet a year ago to narrow down real problem foods. That was fun. NOT!

Chapter 27, Lifetime Protection for Your Heart

Wow. This chapter was very informative and to be honest, I did not retain ONE thing in it. This is one of those medical reference type things that I will have to re-read again (and again) when I want to know more heart stuff.

              Chapter 28, Spreading the Word

I wish that atkinscenter website was still around. I’m not pleased with the info from the current atkins website and their focus on frankenfoods. I don’t see much activity on the Veronica Atkins site either. I hope to spread the word on Atkins (by DANDR) when my weight loss success is obvious.

This is a very cool idea and I plan to do it after I’ve been in Maintenance for a while.

Comments on Part 5, Recipes: Have to say that I was somewhat disappointed in a lot of the recipes. Many of them use Atkins Baking Mix as well as thickening products and items such as low carb tortillas and seem to be geared towards those in Maintenance or at least in the upper rungs. Still, there are some good recipes and ideas in there but I wish the Induction-friendly ones were marked like Linda Sue does.

great to see you back, mizski! i wouldn't worry too much about the gain. you know it will come back off when your body is feeling better.

your retention problem with the heart business is like mine with the diabetes. tough chapters to understand and we'll both read and read again and maybe someday, something will stick.

i never really thought about submitting anything to the National Weight Loss Registry. i'm wondering if any of our members have done that? i think my way of spreading the word was to stay here and do what i did as a moderator.

happymom, i have to ask too why you feel the need to stop atkins for week. like suzanne says, it's a fasting for 12 hours type of test. when dh has to do blood work, he will have his last food at around 7 or 8 pm, go to bed then go do his blood work around 8 the next morning. these are normally hours that you would not be eating anyway so use them to your advantage if you can. dh also, gets ill [stomach, intestial issues] if he doesn't eat regular meals but the schedule i've described works for him.

I had not read Atkins cover to cover since my 1999 edition. This challenge has opened my eyes to the importance to, "Go for the whole program, friends." (as Dr. Atkins said on page 352)
