  • Re: 2009 Staying Cheat Free Challenge

I am aware of that, Sherri. That is why Dr. Atkins gave three exercise plans in DANDR.

For the folks who don't have the book (DANDR, Chapter 22, page 295):
    PLAN 1: JOHNNY GO LIGHTLY

    Criteria:
    • You are over the age of 50.
    • Your body mass index (BMI) is greater than 35 [...]
    • Your current level of physical activity is either none or very little.
    • You have been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, severe asthma or severe arthritis (Again, you must get a physician's approval before beginning this exercise plan. See also "Safety Counts!" on pages 297-298.)

Choose one or more activities from or similar to the ones listed below and do them for ten minutes each, two days a week.
    • Walking on a flat surface
    • Leisure bicycling
    • Basic stretching
    • Yoga
    • Light swimming
    • Beginner water aerobics

Increase your workout time by three minutes each week, and add a third day when you reach week three.
So those who have a lot of weight to lose start with 10 minutes, two days a week, and stretching in a chair is an excellent way to improve health and fitness level!

Personally, I count everything that means I am not doing Atkins as a cheat. Of course, everyone has his/her own definition of cheating. However, exercise should not be left out of the general Atkins equation, because Atkins does not have only a diet part, but also a mandatory exercise part. For some, exercising means stretching in a chair; for some it means biking for half an hour; for Betty it means running 10 miles or a marathon (I couldn't do what Betty is doing without dropping dead somewhere around mile 6. And that on a good day!). But as long as we are exercising according to our possibilities, we are all doing great and following Atkins correctly, no matter what our current fitness level is.

Thanks for sharing the info G.
I believe I clearly explained that everyone has their own level of
exercise. Thank you for clarifying that in regard to DANDR.
This is a cheat free challenge pertaining to woe. If you would like to add exercise to your regime of the challenge, then cool. I was just stating as you did that "everyone has his/her definition of cheating."
According to what you said here, ("Personally, I count everything that means I am not doing Atkins as a cheat.") So your personal standards for this challenge is that if you don't take your supplements, get all your water in, exercise and do your woe correctly, then you're cheating. Is that right G? Those are all aspects of Atkins. Also regarding to the "three legged stool". Woe, Supplements, Exercise.
I commend you for such high standards of a cheat.
Personally, i'm just tickled pink to get through the day on track with my food. Everything else that I do correctly is a bonus.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts and info regarding DANDR.

Yes and no. When I posted my list, I was referring to my Atkins in general, not only to this challenge. On Atkins, a cheat for me is not eating right, not exercising or not taking my supplements (but for supplements I have a Google alarm set up, so I can't forget that ). For this challenge, I would only count the part related to food, so
                • overeating (even meats or fats)
                • eating outside my phase/rung
                • not following the 6-hour rule

                plus two personal rules
                • eating in front of the computer or while doing something else
                • not planning my meals (meals, not amounts) for the next day

The only reason why I quoted the exercise info from DANDR is because you wrote:
For some of the folks at CC (Century Club) They may take offense to your list. Some of them are unable to exercise in our standards and are only able to do stretching and exercise from their chairs.
And I never suggested in my posts previous to yours what one should do for exercise, so I wasn't (and am not) clear why my list would offend CCers in particular. If it is to offend someone, it should offend CCers and non-CCers alike, because the reason for taking offense has nothing to do with one's chosen exercise since I never mentioned the type of exercise in any of my posts (except the quote I gave, but that was in reply to your post).

Your post was suggesting that if one doesn't include exercise along with this woe that they were cheating in this challenge. I was just clarifying that indeed they were not cheating. That's all. Geeeeez!
I feel like i'm in a school yard playing "you said, she said, I said." LOL.
Now can we please carry on with this No Cheat Challenge. LOL.
                    Sherri
Edited to say: Oh and there are some CC'er that are simply unable to exercise at this time. Also, there are members that have disabilities that keep them from exercising. That's why I made the comment that " For some of the folks at CC (Century Club) They may take offense to your list." Not that they would. Simply because their unable to exercise and then would be concerned that they're cheating in this challenge. That's what I was getting at. I just wouldn't want to make them feel excluded in this challenge.
Now that we all know that was merely a suggestion on your part, about exercise for this challenge, and your guidelines alone. So maybe then there won't be any confusion on what to base a cheat on.
