What do we think about a Draft?

Well, I'm a Republican but don't support a draft at this time. I think a military of volunteers is always the best route to go. I forsee this thread getting very politically charged so everyone play nice please!!!! I imagine the mods are very busy with our new board so let's not give them more grief today! :hug

I haven't heard any recent discussion of a draft. But, before the elections it was the DEMOCRATS over 50 were introducing bills to reinstate the draft and include women. Sen. Ernest Hollings, D-S.C., proposed the bill in January 2003 in conjunction with the House bill proposed by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.



As far as "them being able to sell our houses out from under us now" ,if you look at the justices who voted FOR that you will see that they are considered the more "liberal" ones who sit on the bench at this time.

As far as I know this has always been the way our president and his staff feel, too.

Quite a few women have joined voluntarily and fought and died in Iraq and Afganistan. Women have been demading equal rights for years. They reap the benefits of this country, why shouldn't they be included in a possible draft? In fact, women are drated in many other countries. I believe that in Isreal everyone serves 2 years of duty for their country.

Some say Bush started this mess he should figure out a way to clean it up.

First of all, I think that Saddam Hussein "started it" by thumbing his nose at everyone for 12 years. We beat him in the Iraqi war when he invaded Kuwait. Did he learn a lesson from that? NO! And let's not forget to mention a long list of evil crimes against mankind that he is responsible for.

Also, our president didn't decide to go to war alone. The House voted on Oct. 10th, 2002 by 296-133 to give Bush the authority to use US military force. The senate voted the next day with 77-23 to authorize President Bush to attack Iraq.

We've never really been able to have a political conversation on this board without it getting out of hand and I don't look for this one to be any different.

Seems like the "volunteers" are voting with their conscience....by not volunteering. And the ones that did are being forced to serve months if not years more than what they signed up for.

Guess dying in Iraq ain't worth it to most kids.

The Republicans know the Draft would be the end of them...it would be Vietnam all over again.

I totally respect our troops and the families that had to let them go to Iraq. (anyone heard from Tommy? I miss the **** out of that guy...)

But, honestly, if the draft comes back....my children and I move to Costa Rica immediately.

Not just dying in Iraq, but there are a lot of the soldiers who are coming home after having lost an arm or a leg. In some cases both legs. I think I read where between 15000 and 38000 have been wounded. There have been 46 women killed there.

I love the troops and their families. I just can't imagine the hardships they go through. I would be so afraid to let my son go.

Just a thought though, if everyone had that attitude during World War 2 we'd all be speaking German or Japanese and all of the Jews would be dead.

Umm most of the people who fought in WWII were drafted and wouldn't have volunteered.
In fact the voluteers were given the tougher assignments and suffered the highest casualty rates.

This not to take away from anyone who served of course. I'm sure most people who were drafted served as best they could.
All I know is that if my kid ever served I'd hope it wasn't because he was drafted.

I know this.. If I were in the military do I want the person who is fighting beside me to be the person who wants to be there or someone who was forced to be there.. I will choose the person who wants to be there

Thats not really true. Every WW2 veteran I've talked too, and there have been many, Say everyone pretty much volunteered. The recruiting lines were down the streets. Sure they may have been some. the thing is, everyone was afraid, but they knew they had a duty and they did it, no matter what the consequences.

People that know me ask the same question to me. Why would you want to go get killed. I tell them, I don't have to get killed, I will do my best not to, because a dead soilder is useless.

For me, If we need a draft...then have one. Currently we don't need one. Sure the recruitment rates have dropped but thats expected. Goes to show you what kind of kids we have today.

Oh pish tosh...my son is 14 and doesn't want to go to war, but he is very involved in domestic issues like homelessness and hunger, etc. He cares very much about issues that don't appear on VH1.

Not all teenagers are selfish and shallow.

And, no offense intended...you don't have to go to war to earn your freedoms here at home.

Our family is very patriotic, and we are proud to be American. Just because I don't want my sons, or daughters, going to Iraq does not make me (or them) un-American or selfish.

We earn our place here in America every day in ways that don't involve war. I'm not slamming anyone over there, or the families that gave them up and proudly support them while they serve. They have my prayers and respect.
