T-Shirts Not Sanctioned By School District

    POSTED: 7:49 am PDT September 29, 2005
    UPDATED: 8:25 am PDT September 29, 2005

A controversy is brewing at Jefferson County's Green Mountain High School over a T-shirt, reported KMGH-TV in Denver.

The shirt at the center of the debate is one students are asked to wear if they fail to follow the school's dress code.

The shirt reads "Dress Code Violation" on the front and has the school's dress code policy listed on the back.

The aunt of one student who got in trouble calls the enforcement humiliating and wrong.

She complained and the principal said students can wear the T-shirts inside out if they choose.

But some students are making their own statements.

"I don't really think they're getting the point across, because then you see girls wearing the shirts and they're rolling the shirts up, rolling the sleeves up, to show their stomachs. So, it's really not doing anything, it seems like," said student Annie Klane.

Jefferson County School's superintendent told the television station that while she supports Green Mountain's new principal, the T-shirts are not sanctioned by the district and no student is required to wear them with the lettering on the outside.

Probably a day at home with all ZEROS would be better. Or maybe better yet, lets fine the parents for failing to control their child's dress. Start hitting the Mom and Dad in their pocket book and see what happens.

I truly get so tired of seeing these parents crying about humiliation in schools, this and that and the other. Step up to plate and do your job as a parent and we would not have these problems.

And guess what, humilation is not all together a bad thing. In small doses it can serve as a valuable lesson.

    JMHO as always.

the problem with turning the shirt inside out is often you can still see the offensive thing... just in reverse... or it's a constant battle all day long because the kid will turn in the other way each time he/she goes into a new class... just to see if it gets noticed and then have to deal with the discipline issue all over again...

I don't see the problem with the shirt....

Personally if I was made to wear that shirt I would put in on inside-out and write some choice phrases on it like:
            F You!
            or
            Principal Skinner is an hole

Dress codes are for people not smart enough to dress themselves in the morning.

And if they ever pulled something like that with my kids I'd pull them out of that school and sue.

LOL This made me laugh. When I was in high school, a friend of mine was forced to turn a shirt she was wearing inside out, because of something it said. So she grabbed a marker, went in the bathroom, turned her shirt inside out, and wrote "XXXSubmissiveXXX" on the front. And on the back she wrote "I was forced to do this by my 4th period english teacher"
              She ended up getting suspended.

We all had a good laugh though.

if the shirt the kid had on that violated the dress code didn't embarass somebody.. they probably wouldn't be asked to wear the 'dress code violation' one....

being a teacher... it gets bad guys.... i know.. especially in high school..... it gets really bad......sex, drugs, and rock and roll are just the beginning....

there's gang related, racial stuff... you name it....

principals don't usually go looking to fight these battles... but sometimes these battles keep down larger battles...

then hopefully you'd be smart enough to send your kids to school in shirts that weren't offensive or against the dress code... school waste a lot of money beating stupid parents in court..

                      LOL...such a rebel !

Rules exist in school. It helps to prepare our children for the workforce and life after school. If a person did something against work policy they would not be wearing a tee-shirt, but rather standing in the umemployment line.

I would personally ensure that my kids would be wearing that tee if they did not abide by the dress code implemented by the school whether or not they were embarrassed as a result. Tough luck. I'm not raising kids who think they can do anything they want anytime they want and not suffer the repercussions(sp?) from their actions.

As far as you sueing the school...that would be one of those situations that the rest of the parents in the good ole US of A would sit around and laugh at and remark how simple and stupid it really is, and actually we really shouldn't be wasting our time even discussing it.

Yea, no doubt! lol and sadly probably a pretty accurate description of what the future holds in store for them if they can't even follow a dress code.

I'm thinking that about 1/2 of the students who are vioulating are the dress codes are little hussey's who come to school only 1/2 dressed, I don't think its all about offensive sayings on t-shirts. If you read the article it says that the girls that are made to wear the t-shirts just roll them and tie them up so their body parts are hanging out anyway so this approach isn't really doing any good. At that point I say suspend them.

Yea, I saw that a while back. That's the reason for no baggy clothes and shirts being tucked in. But it doesn't cover the lewd clothing that alot of young girls insist on wearing, believe me, there is no place to hide anything in some of the outfits I've seen them wearing at the bus stops!
