Click on that user's name, and there in the menu is an option "Send a private message to <username>".

Is that a different option from a "normal" private message? because I want that my message appears in "reputation" and not as a normal PM. Thank you

See the little scales up on the right hand side of a post? Click on that and it give you the option to add to a user's reputation.

Well Desertthorn Baby, I just looked at my rep points and thank you sweetie.....And if its butt kissing..I like it.

I am still not sure how to award rep points myself.

Show My Reputation Level Your current reputation level is displayed to other users whenever you post a message. If you would like to hide your reputation, disable this option.

Anyone at anytime can turn off or on your reputation feature. IMHO..... whatever? If you like it and enjoy it then have fun! If it bugs you then turn it off.
I personally think it is a great way to let people know you appreciate their posts. And, yes, you can do it through pm. It is just another feature on the board for those who choose to use it.
We had a challenge in the mod forum this weekend........ REP as many good post/posters as you can. Why? It is a POSITIVE thing we can all do, again if you care too. With so much negative out in the world I think anything we can do positive here is a plus. EVERYONE needs a pat on the back. How you do it is your choice. As far as being able to see who gave you the rep, it was requested. If we get enough requests to change it back then we will do so. But, so far more would like to see then not.

It is located on your "user CP" under edit options. First is invisible mode then there is the the reputation. I believe the only thing it will do is not show your rep level up in the corner of your post.
