    Re: American vs British

    No, Rich. Near as I could tell when I was in the U.S. they will serve those biscuits with pretty much anything and everything. Very good. Slightly different from a scone though. Don't talk about scones. Brits and Canadians make them with raisins or currents and serve them with whip cream and jam. Yummy. Cream tea anyone?

        The owners / management of Public houses / bars have to have a liscene to sell alcohol. I assume that has some link to the "liquor store" question.

          We have to have licenses to sell alcohol here too. In fact the state handles it here, we have a weird name for those stores too --they're called "ABC Stores" wanna know why? They are opperated by the state "Alcohol Board of Control"

            Flannel = facecloth
            Mr. Kipling = Hostess, Little Debbie, Vachon
            Polo = peppermint lifesavers

            What are twiglets? I can't figure out if they are cookies or pretzels. Characters in British novels like to eat them a lot though. Along with Jaffa cakes (which apparently aren't cakes, but more like cookies)

            Dust bin = garbage can (hence the term "bin liners")

              Here is a neat little link, you choose the American or British word and it will "translate" it for you -- too bad the list isn't a little longer, its kind of limited.

                  Cool list Mog. I think Twiglets is a brand though. I once had to ask my British friend what polos are. All the characters in my books were giving them to their horses. I couldn't figure it out. We lost touch years ago so she's not around to translate for me anymore.

                    We Canadians tend to spell like the Brits, so I just spell like them by default. lol

                        Jaffa cakes are a biscuit crossed with a cake really. Its got a sponge base, with orange something on then a thin layer of chocolate on top.

                            Yes, we get Jaffa cakes here. But not twiglets. What are twiglets? Only the women in my books eat them. Maybe only girls know about it. Can you ask your gf?

                                Twiglets are crispy meat flavoured things that are shaped like minature twigs really.
