    Re: American vs British

A tart is a pastry base filled with fruit or (ususally) seet stuffs.
That is the same as here--like a mini fruit pie almost

Flan here is the same as Flan in France so I'm guessing yours is the same.

No Treacle is as I said a sugary liquid.

Golden trackle could be used in a pudding - a steamed pudding would have a songe mixture steamed or baked with tracke at its base. when cooked its turn out and upsdie down so the hot and partially crystalised tracle runs down the songe - often seved with custard.

A treacle tart would be a pastry base cooked with tracle in it - again it partially crystalises - serve with custard again.

I thought it was disgusting - even before Atkins!

I had forgotten about black pudding. Or a steak and kidney pie. I don't think I could ever eat anything with the word "kidney" in it. Or haggis! My grandmother ate it while we were in Edinburgh. I wouldn't have anything to do with it. Now I wish I had at least tried it.

I agree. MoG and I are from the southern US, so some of our "traditional" foods are very English: biscuits (aka scones), Sally Lunn bread, sage and onion type stuffings, steammed puddings (I had an auntie who used to make a steammed apple pudding), fruit cakes, etc. But some "traditional" foods are strictly "American". For example, there is a specialty in St. Mary's County, Maryland called a "stuffed ham". Basically, you take a ham, make deep gashes in it, and stuff the gashes with a mixture of chopped greens (kale, collard, mustard, watercress, onion, spices, etc.). The ham is wrapped in cheesecloth, boiled until cooked, then cooled. That recipe is from the plantation era when the slaves were given hog's heads. Stuffing the hog heads with veggies made it tastier and more appealing. Eventually, the dish moved to the plantation owner's table and a ham replaced the head. Anyway, the ham is sliced very thinly and served cold.

I'd also need to cover it in chocolate sauce and get really really drunk before it would make it any more appealing to me
