I am the first one to say, dont take advise from strangers on the internet.. but here we are...
A choice of two roads.
I have two jobs waiting for me.
Job A:
Admin Payroll Position, working 3p-11.30p, about 15 min from home for a major resort. Desk work, mostly by myself, 12.00 hour, 40 hrs a week. Insurance kicks in first of the month, following hire. Very friendly environment, lots of room for advancement. 10 holidays, 12 vacation days a year, 3 sick days. SEVERLY discounted vacation opportunities... employee rates are about a fourth of what the General Public pays. Sometimes pennies on the dollar. Opportunities for overtime, if I want them. better income increasing potential. 401K after a year, etc. In this job, I pull my kids out of school (we ARE having problems with the school, I am seriously upset with them.), they would go to daycare 2:30 - 6:00, then to my folks until I pick them up sleeping. It allows me to homeschool, minimal child care, etc. Downside... my folks SAY that they are fine with having them, but it is clear that with my dad there are issues about this... he isnt thrilled about them being here all the time, though he will do it, cause my mom says so. Also, I would miss dinner and bedtime, soccer practices, etc. BUT I miss out on only 5 hours of their day. I also have concerns about some of the things that my dad tells them, etc. He doesnt get how I am raising them (is going out of his way to counter what I have told them about Christmas and Santa)...etc... But they would be with family.
JOb B:
Right down the road, from where we are, and where I am looking to live. Admin Asst position for a retirement community (where my folks live), working with maintenance and grounds... Desk work, mostly by myself. 13-14 an hour/40 hrs a wk. They promote women aggressively, and from within, aggressively. Insurance kicks in in 90 days ( a draw back, I would like to see a dentist NOW)..they pay all the employees insurance, but with the family coverage, it is still slightly more expensive insurance than the other. 12 holidays, 10 vacation, 10 sick. Hours 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. I would drop the kids with my folks at 6:30, they would go to the YMCA at 7:30, and then to school. My youngest in child care at 12:00 till I pick him up at 3:00, I would be able to get the other two from school. They are very family friendly, all the bosses have been single moms, so they say that they are very understanding about sick kids, conferences, etc. Upsides: I would be there for all afternoon and dinner time, so I would get to make all the practices, etc, and not upset bedtime. BUT, I wouldnt get to homeschool them, unless I put them in daycare all morning, like it was summer time, which IS an option. I am having really serious issues with the school they are in, and am really anxious to get them out of it. I lose 9.5 hours of their day, and we are perhaps a bit more rushed to get everything in... the gym, etc... In this job, I could take a position that has been offered to me at the Body Shop as a part time asst mngr, so I could supplement our income that way, 12 hours a week, not much, but enough to keep the kids in swim lessons.
SO.. thoughts.. input... I am flailing about with this one... And looking for any insights I can get.
I KNOW most folks dont understand why I am so avidly a BE HOME home mom/ homeschooler, but I am. My folks have already tried the "why dont you just let it go, every other family does this eleven hours a day (daycare adn school), its NORMAL"... normal for everyone else doesnt mean that it is best for my family, or in line with my vision of what should be. I cant tell you why this is so life or death to me, just that it is, to be able to do as much of the raising of my children as I can do, and to make the most impact possible.
Perhaps an objective brain will see something mine cant.
Anyhow, at the very worst, thanks so much for listening.
