  • "Super Size Me" Movie -- Have you seen it?

A while back someone on this board had suggested that we watch "Super Size Me". Well, my DH and I watched it this week and were really amazed at how fast someone's health can start failing from not eating whole, processed foods. Who would think? I've worked with many people who eat all three meals out just about everyday (them and their children). No wonder we have so many medical problems plaguing the general population.

If you saw the movie, what were your thoughts?

If you haven't watched it, then when you get time you may want to check into it. Please note (if you have children): this would be considered a PG-13 (language and a little graphic).

I'm hoping to see it over the holidays. My ds is 14 and he saw it sometime last year. He thought it was great and thinks everyone should watch it. He also hates McDonald's but I think that started before he saw the movie anyway.

I watched it with my 16 yr old neice last year..she got nothing out of it but a craving for a McChicken LOL.

I was amazed by how many ppl eat there on a regular basis. Even before i was low carb i would maybe eat mcd's once every two months..if that. and usually it was breakfast (oh how i miss those crispy little hashbrowns ).

Though really there's alot of convenience/packaged foods if you ate them everyday they wouldn't do much for your health..not just fast food.

I believe in everything in moderation.

I haven't watched it. I'm too busy drooling over Richard Armitage in "North and South" http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/northands...armitage.shtml

          But I digress....

Food is fuel for your body. If you give your body non-nutritive fuel, you'll pay the price. So it doesn't surprize me that persistently eating poorly nutritive food will result in poor overall health.

What's disheartening is a survey that said the most common vegetable fed to toddlers is french fries! http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/diet....r.junkfood.ap/

              Megs, You're so funny!!

Sadie, yes, I agree -- that was a gross part and I felt like that thinking about the way it smells sometimes. It is odd how it can be so addictive yet our bodies really don't want it.

Better to drool after Richard Armitage than it is to drool after donuts and french fries, imo

Yummy! He's much more tastier than anything from McDonalds. Now I wonder, why wouldn't they have picked this guy as the new James Bond instead of the blond dude they ended up with?

KKat-- I totally agree with your summation. The movie is an amazing eye-opener. I really laud the phys ed teacher who put into gear an outstanding fitness program for his students at the school! To me, people like him are truly heroes. There's more about him in the bonus footage of the DVD.

In places like Texas where kids' fitness is so bad due to weather and kids being lazy in the air conditioning, it's films like these that make me thankful we've moved. I honestly believe area of the country determines to some degree the issues of overweight. Where we are now my kids have all slimmed down, eat more healthfully, and everybody here walks or bikes! I just love it! Even at school the kids get 2 recesses. In Texas they walked around the gym for exercise and maybe got a recess per day. It was pretty lame.

So people like that coach are needed in Texas, where kids can put together indoor exercise fitness programs or can better what their parents do by getting out and getting that exercise while they're young and are putting good habits into practice (or bad).

Re: "Super Size Me" Movie -- Have you seen it?

I saw this when in came out cinemas. I loved it.

Recently we hired the DVD and watched it. There is a bonus feature where Morgan puts an assortment of different burgers and fires in different glass containers. He then follows them up weekly to see how they decompose. It really is quite sickening.

The funny thing is after weeks, some of the food still looks like new - for example the quarter pounder and the fries.

I highly recommend anyone to hire the dvd and watch it. Kids should watch it as well.

Just as a side note - as an Aussie who has never been to the USA, I was really shocked at what kids were eating in the school cafeterias! I'm not saying we are perfect by any means over here, but geese it's bad!

I went to a primary school (grades 1-7) that had no junk food. It just has a 'tuck shop' that sold sandwiches and juice, and fruit. And this was in the eighties. There was no lollies (sweets), chocolate of softdrink - this was good.

If parents want to make a change, I'm sure that they can!

I saw this movie last year on DVD. My goodness, it was fascinating and disgusting at the same time. The fact that this healthy man could literally decimate his health in less than 30 days was amazing. Needless to say, I stopped eating fast food -- the clincher was watching the bonus footage Dave mentioned. The very idea that McDonald's french fries do NOT degrade is beyond the valley of disgusting!!

I recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. It is an amazing commentary on our society!
