Anyway, todays poll. If you had the choice / money, where would be your ideal vacation! (I have split it into continents). You can vote for more than one.

Where is Australasia? Is that a combination of Australia and Asia? Is that an actual place?

            Australasia

            From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

            Jump to: navigation, search

            Australasia

Australasia is the area that includes Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the many smaller islands in the vicinity, most of which are the eastern part of Indonesia. The name was coined by Charles de Brosses in Histoire des navigations aux terres australes (1756). He derived it from the Latin for "south of Asia" and differentiated the area from Polynesia and the southeast Pacific (Magellanica). Australasia is sometimes used as a term for Australia and New Zealand alone, in the absence of another word limited to those two countries.

From political and cultural perspectives, the word has little utility, as although Australia and New Zealand are both relatively wealthy, predominantly English-speaking countries and alike in many ways, they share little in common with the other nations in the area. The term is unpopular in New Zealand because it is seen to emphasize Australia and seemingly implies the region is part of Asia; instead, the term Oceania is preferred, although this has a rather different meaning, and Australia is often thought of as not being part of Oceania by New Zealanders.

From a biological point of view, however, Australasia is a distinct region with a common evolutionary history and a great many unique plants and animals, some of them common to the entire area, others specific to particular parts but sharing a common ancestry.

The biological dividing line from Asia is the Wallace line, which represents the boundary between the two continental plates. Sulawesi and Lombok lie on the eastern, Australasian side of the line and Borneo and Bali lie on the western, Asian side.

In the past, Australasia has been used as a name for a combined Australia and New Zealand team. Examples include in 1905, when Australia and New Zealand combined its best tennis players to compete in the Davis Cup international tournament, and at the Olympic Games of 1908 and 1912.

              My preferance is Europe.

I have never been outside of Australia. Money is an issue. It is a long flight to London.
My fiancee is real keen on visiting the USA. But I see so much of America on television - I'm not really interested. I'd still go though!

I wanna see Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway - all those places!

                    Re: Preferred Vacation Destination!

Asia for me.. I'd love to see Australasia, too.

Have been to Thailand 2 years ago and I would love to see more - and maybe visit Vietnam, too.
Right now the idea of snorkeling in a turquoise warm ocean, sitting on a crystal white beach or grilling fresh seafood while sipping a glass of ice cold water and staring at the sea makes me want to book the next flight...

                      Re: Preferred Vacation Destination!

If I could afford it for me it would be Asia, with Australia a close second, Europe a close third. I've only been out of North America twice, to Northern Ireland.

I have a friend that took a year leave from work and travelled through Africa, Australia, Asia (he was in Thailand during the Tsunami) he says as beautiful as all those places are, Asia was his fav. He took thousands of pictures..they're spectacular.
