  • Anyone know what this is?

This is one of the critters that "lives" in our yard. I've been told it's a prarie dog (uh.. don't think so?), a vole (personally up until a couple years ago I thought voles were something that Piers Anthony made up!), and a ground squirrel. Looks like a chipmunk to me! If it helps with identification it likes peanuts, carrots, and road kill (seriously..I thought these things were cute and cuddly at first.. EEK!).

It sure doesn't look like a chipmunk, besides, it looks too big to be one I think (hard to tell size in a picture)

Hrm.. it looks similar to the prarie dog, but the face is a bit different and it's not as big as a prarie dog? I'd say it's maybe 6 inches? It's pretty small. Hrm.. maybe ground squirrel?

Heh.. it looks like the chipmunk to me, course I've only seen chipmunks in cartoons.

Pretty sure it isn't a squirrel, they usually have big bushy tails.

Re: Anyone know what this is?

Err.. not all species of squirrels have long bushy tails.

I need to figure out how to get the first picture to show up better. I'd say it was prarie dog too because they look similiar but this critter has striped markings on it's back. Hrm.

I can't find any pictures of a Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel that has it standing up.. all I can find are pictures of it's back!

Chipmunks will fit in the palm of your hand! Definatley not a squirrel, at least it doesn't look like the ones around here. I've never seen a ground squirrel. Hmm

Thats what I thought too.. but it's markings are distinct like the pictures I've found ot the 13 striped squirrels.
