  • Ok I Hate Tv Because....

Well I never watch it anyway but I am telling you I just walked in on my husband watching the news and besides that being violent biased and an awful way to start your day IMHO ...I saw a commercial where kids were pulling out and dumping individual packets of Koolaid into water bottles ...this commercial said to kids "why drink plain old water when you can have sugary fluorescent colored crap in that bottle instead?"

OMG I just can not handle this ..how do you guys sit through this crap especially raising children ... kids are bombarded with junk food and visuals of death and destruction and as an adult I just find it impossible to start my day with that ..I can only imagine how kids feel???

when my kids were little we went years with out tv because I "accidently" dumped a glass of water down the back of it to break it and oh dear we just did not have the money to repair it...

suddenly we were talking and playing games and reading again ..go figure

I got so pisssed off at this Koolaid commercial I wanted to scream!!! pocket sized packages because God forbid your kids drink plain old water????? let them have paydoh if they want bright colors!!!!! it is better for them even if they eat it I bet!!!!

I have to be honest I did not censor my kids reading, music or anthing that stimulated creativity in them ..they listened to some pretty crappy and nasty music and read some pretty lousy books ..but music is an art ...reading is reading...and imho images shot at you first thing in the morning is kind of a mindless impact on them ...

they do not have to listen carefully or read to be impacted by TV

KOOLAID IN A WATER BOTTLE?????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if they are going to eat sugar let them get up off their increasingly fatter butts and open a cook book find a recipe and make a damnn cake!!!! at least it is a learning process ...

sorry I am ranting again right?

the single most wonderful thing to me is to walk into a home that does not have a TV in the living room and seeing kids flopped on the furniture with a book in their faces or at the table or on the floor doing something with a pencil or colors ...NOT DRINKING COLORS IN FRONT OF THE BLASTING TV FROM WATER BOTTLES!!!!!

                  Heidi-
We got rid of our cable a year ago and our four kids were horrified that we could do something so evil.

I was worried about the physical effects of sitting in front of a TV for hours at a time. My children have always been thin and healthy because they play outside but they were turning into mindless little blobs that didn't want to do any type of physical activity because of their preoccupation with TV. Their school work was also declining because they were too busy to study and they never seemed to have any homework. The grades have improved and I've got three kids with above average reading and spelling and reading skills. My 7th grader reads at an 11th grade level. The fourth child is going into first grade and not reading yet but loves listening to books.

Most days will pass without the TV coming on because we are outside playing some type of game and if the weather is bad they play cards, board games or color. It is amazing to see the quality of their life improve as they have adjusted to limited TV.

We told the kids they were limited to one hour a day of TV, video games, or computer time and in the beginning they would make sure they got their hour in but those days are gone. Our oldest would love to change the rules (and tries to make his own) but the joy of being a parent is saying "no" and not feeling guilty. Our kids are much healthier mentally and physically because of the changes we made.

I laughed about your glass of water "accidently" spilling. I was so disgusted about the TV controlling our lives but never had the courage to physically kill the dang thing. Now I just look at the big screen tv and think of it as wasting space except it does come in handy when I want to do exercise videos and the kids usually join in so it has become a positive object in our lives.

                    OMG I LOVE YOU!!!

My kids still diss me about dumping the water I did it in front of them when they would not shut the damn thing off one day I just walked up and poured it slowly down the back ..worked like a charm!!! I was a VERY liberal parent that is for sure!!! I never censored anything else .... but you are right it did have a control over them and they just sat there staring like zombees I hated that TV stupor so much!!!!!

Well I'm not as hardcore anti-tv as you folks, but we didn't have cable for probably 10 yrs. It got disconnected for not paying the bill (lol) and we couldn't find a valid reason to hook it back up. The kids watched what we put in the VCR for them - commercial free and entertaining without being violent or innappropriate.

They are 10 and 13 now and we have one tv on satellite. It's usually off all day long unless I'm listening to a music station on it, and turned on only in the evening for a couple hours before bed. Zero cartoons, sitcoms, brainless drivel. Science fiction on Space channel is the only non informational type stuff we watch and we dont consider that mindless entertainment. Commercials are almost always muted. We are still ever mindful of what's going in their little brains (and ours!)

Re: Ok I Hate Tv Because....

When I was a kid, we had 2 tv sets: one in my parent's room and one in the family room. The family room was really the "family" room. My mom and dad would sit in the room after dinner and watch tv or read. We had an old dining room table in there where we would do homework and other school projects. So tv watching was a family event. There were a few things we used to watch that my dad couldn't stand ("Family Ties", "Mork and Mindy") but he and mom used to sit in there reading or watching with us.

Very different than what happens in some families now....

I don't have cable because if I did, I would be glued to the Food Network 24 hours a day....

Hmm that brings up another point, not2late.

How many people have a tv in their bedrooms?

We've *never* had one in there. We have one tv in our living/family room that we watch together at night before bed. When the day is over it's turned off and we toddle off to bed. Our bedroom is a place to sleep. We don't read in bed either. If we're not ready for sleep, well we find other sources of entertainment (lol)
