Nestle to Buy Jenny Craig for $600 Million
      AP
VEVEY, Switzerland (June 19) - Nestle AG, the world's biggest food and drink company, said Monday it is buying weight management and diet company Jenny Craig for $600 million.

The current management team of Jenny Craig Inc., which is based in Carlsbad, Calif., will continue to run the business and report directly to Nestle, the Swiss company said in a statement.

Nestle is buying Jenny Craig - which employs more than 3,000 people - from two private equity groups, ACI Capital and MidOcean Partners. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter, the private equity firms said in a statement.

Weight management will become a new business within Nestle's nutrition unit and will reinforce its U.S. presence. The Swiss company already owns the Lean Cuisine line of foods.

"With this strategic acquisition, the group takes another important step in its transformation process into a nutrition, health and wellness company," said Nestle Chairman and Chief Executive Peter Brabeck-Letmathe.

"The rise of obesity and the resulting metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, is a major public health concern, not only in the USA but also the world over," Brabeck-Letmathe said.

Jenny Craig, which has more than 600 weight-loss centers in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, generated sales of more than $400 million in the past 12 months and achieved double-digit internal growth.

Nestle shares gained 1 percent to $300.38 in Zurich trading.

Yes, they do have them. But like I said, in order to be successful, you find that you can't/won't eat them. If you tried to survive on WW cakes and shakes, you'd always be so hungry that eventually you give up. If however, you eat your veggies and higher fiber foods, you aren't ever hungry. My mom (who I suspect will soon give up WW) bought a whole bunch of WW candy and then got upset with me when I turned them down saying "I don't want to waste points on that." If you follow the plan, it'll work. Atkins for some, WW for others, and NutriSystem then Atkins for the rest .

I've been on Jenny Craig a few times. Once I did get down to 210 lbs, but of course gained it all back plus more when I went off of the plan.

They give you all sorts of rubbish for snacks and meals. The meal portions ar\e soooo small, and the snack portions (cheesies, popcorn, cakes, desserts, etc) are also very small too. I was hungry all the time on that diet. They encourage you to stock up on veggies if you are hungry in between meals/snacks.

I'm sure it works to lose the weight but what does it teach about keepig the weight off??

The snacks are all high in carbs, not very big portions, but stlil very high in carbs!

I do agree with you about WW they are commercial on tv and stuff but from what I know about the meetings and program they do encourage you to eat actual food, drink water and move your butt ...

Re: Has anyone heard this about Jenny Craig?

You must remember that Nestle is a very diversified company, the chocolate soide of it is a very small percentage of the total. For instance, they make all Nescafe coffee - something like 95% of the market here in Oz. They are also huge in the baby food market, and as the earlier post said they own the Lean Cuisine brand. So maybe JC is not such a strange choice for them - obviously it ia a money maker or they would not bother with it.

And they are the Purina pet food brand as well, so they are really into everything!

Funny how people will pay a motza to be dictated to on what they could eat when with a little effort, a few bucks for a book, and a healthy dose of common sense they could all be doing what we are doing and enjoying food and life as well.
