  • what does it cost to dress for work?

I am curious and really am trying to justify an bit of an expensive gift to myself ....I figure I save a ton of money buy the fact my work supplies and launders my scrubs ......all I buy is shoes at about $160/year ...

I feel selfish wanting to spend this money when I know there are much more sensible things I can do with it!!...but I am tired of being sensible with money all the time and really want to do this ...

what I want to do is hire someone to come and put a small waterfall that I will surround with native plants on the hill beside my house the hill is steep and perfect I think..the waterfall will wind and flow down into my garden where I will install a small pond to catch and direct the water for irrigation to my eventual flower garden...there I will have a huge clawfoot tub with hot and cold water.(yes outside in the garden)..so I can sit in it after work by the waterfall and look out at the Puget Sound in the evenings when I get off work.....(we have a spring behind the house that can naturally feed the waterfall)....is this insane? because I really want to do this ....

Clothing costs a lot of money and I imagine for those of you who have to dress every day to go to work the bills can be pretty much up there....even if you don't have to "dress" ..jeans, tshirts, socks all of that costs quite a bit to keep up... so I figure if I know approximately what people usually spend on work clothing per year ...I can make myself and my husband feel better about doing this ...since currently there are no other options for justification I wanted to try this one

          Heidi-

I buy my own scrubs but they can be written off at tax time so shoes are my only "real" expense.

Get the waterfall. I think it's a great idea. If you don't spend the money on this this it will just go somewhere else so you might as well enjoy your view. It would be a great way to relax and have some down time.

I do that - justify for something I want. For example, I quit smoking 3 years ago. I don't even want to add up what that comes to. But, I've used it. I also shop at yard sales. My house is literally filled with antiques that I could never afford to buy - so I justify that. The list goes on and on. I don't know why I justify spending money. It's guilt, I guess.

I wish I could stop. It's almost like I think I don't deserve it. Or, that I need someone to tell me it's okay. I don't know - but, it's something, because there are plenty of women out there spending away that don't think twice about spending money on manicures, pedicures, new purses that match every pair of shoes they own, expensive makeup, shampoos, conditioners, anti-wrinkle creams and the works!

My point is - if you want it, get it. YOU deserve it!

About two years ago, I wanted new landscaping. I hired someone to come take a look and give me an estimate. They did. It was a LOT of money. It sat on my countertop for about two months. But, you know what - after I kept looking at the amount, it didn't look so bad anymore! LOL

I ended up getting my beautiful landscaping out front and a new walkway to boot! I love it! I mean, I REALLY love it! Go for it Heidi - a little beauty that you'll enjoy is so worth it! Call today!

Re: what does it cost to dress for work?

I work from home so I don't spend much, I probably spend more on gym/running clothes since that's what I wear the most. Though I do have to go to the office occaisionally, so I do have to buy some (and i had to buy all new work clothes when I hit goal). But i try to save my work clothes shopping for when i am in the states...we take a trip to buffalo every year, the clothes are way cheaper for what you get - i got 2 pairs of 100% lined linen pants at Target for $21.99! how can you beat that? (they'd cost easily $75 here).

shoes are my weakness, even though i don't have to wear heels very often, I own more pairs of them than i would like to admit

Two years ago, I'd never spent more $300/year on myself, but THIS year lol, it's much more fun!!!

I really don't know how to answer this question. On an annual basis, I suppose I spend at least $2000 per year, but that doesn't include shoes. I'm definitely not a shoe-a-holic, but I buy good shoes that don't hurt my feet. I drop $80 bucks on a pair of shoes easily. I'm not a bargain shopper by any means, in fact, I don't even like shopping that much, so I end up spending too much and I never find stuff on sale or clearance, because I don't take the time to shop the deals. Bottom line, I spend way too much on work clothes, but I need to wear professional business attire.
