  • How did you name your children?

My "do you like your name" thread got me thinking....

Since the poll currently shows that more of us like our name now than we did when we were younger, I wondering if your attitude about your name influenced how you named your child.

For example, if you have a name you thought was "boring" or too "old-fashioned", did you give your child a more trendy, contemporary name?

Or if you had a trendy name for your generation, did you give your child a trendy name too or did you do something more old-fashioned?

I don't have children, but I've always given my pets human names. I had a cat named "Roland" and another cat named "Cindy".

I named my oldest son after a great big handsome Brittish man I met in Port Alberni BC...he drove a logging boat up there ...long story as to what I was doing there .....his name was Ian and when I met him the first thing I told him when I could speak (he was so freaking handsome I lost the ablity to talk) "I am naming my first born son after you" and I did his name is Ian

my second son we were living in Arizona and I loved being in the Southwest learning about all the old stuff ..so I named him after Jesse James

      his name is Jesse!

my girls came to me already named!

Re: How did you name your children?

My DS will not have to put up with the miseries of having a name like Susan. Susan is soooo common, I always thought people were talking about me behind my back, whenever I heard the name. Bad for my esteem - I assumed it was always negative things they said. And wherever someone called out Susan in a large place, I'd have to find out whether they were calling on me or another Susan. Plus "S" comes close to the end of the alphabet, and growing up I frequently was last when lineups were alphabetized. (My last name also started with S).

So, I picked a name beginning with A, that I'd never heard of anyone named, that I liked the origin & meaning of: Avery

I don't have kids, but my dogs name is Mickey...he has one blue eye and one brown, I looked at him and called him Mickey Blue Eye

I used to have a cat named Doobie, I was 12 when I named her. I had heard some teenagers talking about 'smoking doobies' and i thought that was such a weird name for cigarattes but i thought it was a neat name for my new kitten it became pretty emarassing when i found out what a doobie was .

Oohh! I like this topic! I'm one of those parents who likes patterns in everything... I named each of my kids with SAW initials and each has a unisex name - so we knew the kid's name before knowing the gender. Sawyer and Sydney both turned out to be girls, and Sage ended up a boy. He's the only one who likes his name so far. I think Sawyer will like her name now that Disney channel put out a new movie in which the most popular girl in school is named Sawyer.

So I have some funny name stories to throw in with this topic too. See, when Sawyer bought a doll for Sydney, they named the baby doll "SawSyd" - a combination of the two names. And when she bought a doll for Sage, they called the baby "SawSage". Yes, sounds like "sausage".

Now, the girls have each adopted nicknames, at least within the family. Sawyer writes Thyme as her name on everything. Sydney (who radiates femininity) calls herself Rosemary. So now I have Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. We nicknamed the dog Parsley. (And now everyone will hate me for getting the song stuck in their heads for the rest fo the day).

Re: How did you name your children?

My story--- Starts when my mom was 9- her dad passed away. She always wanted to name a child after him. They first had my sister, then me-- no luck to have a boy. So I produce the first grandchild and named him after my unknown to me grampy. My son has the blessed name of "Raymond James", ironically it covers all the grampies in my life- my other living grampy is James,a nd my hubbies grampy (now deceased) was James, so they always thought the middle name was after them and the first name after my grampy whom passed. So it all worked out!!! My son is gorgeous jsut liek my gramp was and has the Kurt Douglas dimple in his chin. In all the generation phots I can find of all my family-- My grampy Raymond James , myslef, and my son ; are the only ones with blue eyes and dimpled chin..How odd. I also got my middle name after HIM-- I am Billie-Jo Rae!!!!

Sorry to bor you-- I always love to share this story!!

I don't have any kids either. I have two cats - Cally because she's sort of a calico cat, and Scrambles is yellow and white and reminded us of scrambled eggs.

My sons name was suppose to be Christian Alexander.
Then I picked up a romance book, the main character was a cowboy named Chase.
As soon as I read that name, I knew my son would be Chase Alexander.

                      My fur children -
George the cat was named after George Strait the country singer.

Sandi the gordon setter was named for the song from grease which was playing on the radio on the way home from getting her.

Ralphy - his name started as a joke. On the way home from the breeder he got car sick several times - we were going over names - and I jokingly said Lets call him "Ralph" because he ralphs (pukes) so much. Well wouldn't you know - my son loved the name!

I happen to have just posted this on another thread, so I'll just copy it. My family seems to have fallen into a pattern of alliteration, although I don't think it started out consciously:

Our family's thing has turned out to be names that start with the same letters. For instance, my parents' names both start with "J". My two brothers and I all start with "L". My two childrens' names start with "M". My younger brother's four boys all start with "L". My older brother has two children that start with "K". He didn't get with the program, though, and he has a third child that starts with "P". My husband is one of three children whose names start with "D". Enough, already!

Re: How did you name your children?

We waited for our sweet daughter for 6.5 years (not our choice to wait)...we named her Sara because she is our princess, sent from heaven. At age 21, she has lived up to her name, although we could have just as well named her Angel, because that describes her to a "T".

As for our furry son, (our Himalayan kitty) he was born the year the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup (NHL Hockey) and was the league's most valuable player ... therefore, he is named Martin St. Louis (pronounced Mar Ton San LaWee...don't even think of calling him ST. LOUIS (as in MISSOURI!)

Re: How did you name your children?

We adopted our DS when he was 3, so he had a name, which we would never think of changing...his name means "powerful endeavor".

Our furry kids---our male Jack Russell - I wanted to name him Garth after Garth Brooks, but DH said it wasn't dignified enough for a Jack Russell, so I went with Brooks.

Our female Jack Russell - she came to us with the name Mandy.

Our feathered kid - our cockatiel - Spunky - when we got him he had a lot of spunk, so that became his name.

Re: How did you name your children?

I had some pretty unusual names for my kids picked out.. but family intervention prevented it. Probably a good thing since my boy would've been named Rayven.

My son is named after my dad's dad (which is a good thing... my dad's older brother who was named after their dad passed away shortly after my son was born), his middle names (yup he got two!) were my grandpa's last name on my mom's side since there wouldn't be any heirs to carry it on, and my great great uncle's name since he passed away shortly before my son was born.

My little girl started out Jennifer. Eww. No offense to those with the name Jennifer, but that's my sisters name and it's really common now. Anyway my girl had these super rosey cheeks.. and thats how she got her name. Her middle name is my Nana's mother's name.

Heh onto the critters. My bird who passes away was named Ian Hooshi Wasau (probably spelled wrong) anyway Ian is supposed to be bird in Gaelic, Hooshi is supposed to be bird in Choctaw, Wasau is supposed to be bird in french. We ended up calling her Puffy Dog because she loved the song Puff the Magic Dragon and she would go running to my sister when she called the "puppy dogs" to go outside.

Taz had many names before we settled on Taz. He got the name Taz because my mom thinks he looks like a tazmanian devil and he thinks he is a big dog.

Moose and Elk go their names because our beloved dog Bear who passed away many many years ago. He was the best dog in the world and we wanted another dog like him.. we had a Bear Jr. in San Diego who passed away a few years ago. We were looking for names for our new pup and tried to think of what goes with bear.. bear is a forest creature.. MOOSE! Heh.. Elk got his name to go with Moose. If we get another dog it'll be Deer.
Female/32/Still too big, but getting smaller..

                              Instant insanity!
