No and no. There will always be a percentage of people who will "forget" to use birth control or who will choose to have unprotected sex for whatever reason. Likewise, there will always be a percentage of women who will "forget" to take the morning after pill or will "get too busy" to go buy it or whatever other reason.

So I don't think there will be a change in the number of unprotected sex, abortions or unplanned pregnancies.

          Re: Plan B

MoG, I work in healthcare, however, not with pregnancy or anything like that. But I've heard alot of reasons for not taking this medication or not getting lab work done or whatever. One of my all time favorites was when I worked at a hospital clinic. The laboratory was down the hall, to the right, and clearly marked "Laboratory". It had a waiting room that opened into the hall. There was one person who never got lab work, despite the doctor ordering it several times. Finally, the person told the RN that he didn't know where the lab was. So she walked him down the hall, to the right, had him sit in the waiting room. He never got the lab work done. Next visit, the RN asked what happened. He said that he didn't feel like waiting around, thought he could come back the next day but other things happened and he couldn't find the time. What can you do?

That's why I don't think the numbers will change. I mean, how many threads have you read like "I went to McDonalds and couldn't find anything legal, so I had to eat cheeseburger, fries, and a regular Coke"?

The only thing I'm kind of hesistant about this is rape. Women who are raped are very traumatized and embarassed. It's great they have this resource to prevent pregnancy stemming from their rape. But it worries me. I don't know if I can explain this as clearly as I would like, but I'll try.

Let's say a woman is raped. She's embarrassed and traumatized. So she goes to a pharmacy and takes the morning after pill. (Good for her, imo.) But what happens if she then thinks "Okay, I'm safe in terms of pregnancy. So I don't need to go to a hospital and be asked all these questions and get examined. And I don't want to go to the police to report it, because I've already taken care of the problem." Here you have a woman who might still need medical help (like an STD screen and whatever else) and you'll have a rape that goes unreported so the rapist can go out and do it again. Yeah, that sounds kinda far fetched, but it's still something that concerns me....

Sorry I posted it before I was finished...

And I think we need to think about these "far-fetched" situations and trouble-shoot them before they become a reality. For example, we need to make sure that women who are raped/brutalized are encouraged to still report the crime and go to a hospital or clinic to be checked out, eventhough they took the morning-after pill. Because it would be a pity if one of these women fall through the crack because they think that pill will solve everything and make their experience "go away".

                Re: Plan B

jacksuncle, the same thing can apply for incest cases...Those perpetrators are sick, imo. So, what if the perp has sex with his neice or daughter, then has her take the morning after pill. Again, imo, that would be a good thing so that girl won't suffer being raped by relative AND have to be pregnant by him. But it might make things "easier" for these abusers to continue their abuse. I'm not saying that the morning after pill will promote or enable sex abuse, but these people are sick and who knows what they will do keep up the abuse.

                Editing to add...

So I think that before this scenario becomes a reality, we really need to educate more and make reporting abuse a more comfortable experience and more non-intimidating.

Again, I don't know if I'm explaining myself as clearly as I would like. So if you'd like me to explain it better, ask away and I'll try to do better.

That makes sense too me because I am a recovering drug addict and any excuse to continue or cover up my use I would take full advantage of everytime. It gives me chills to think about what you say but I could see that being the case with addicts of that nature. That is down right eerie.

This may be a stupid question but I wonder if the pill is to benefit women with possible pregnancies or its for making money for the manufacturers. I mean do the people who make these meds really care about the people who buy them?

Now that's a subject I don't want to touch! lol.

I've re-read what I've written and anyone who wants me to explain myself, I'll be happy to because like I said, with this on the market, now's the time to really step up our education efforts. We'll need to educate women that if they are raped, it's okay to take this pill. In fact, they should demand to take this pill. However, they still need to report the crime to the police because the perpetrator has to be held accountable for his actions and he won't if the crime goes unreported.

                        This thread is doooooooomed...

I heard a Dr. on the radio this morning describing the way this medication works is like "the pill" by preventing ovulation so if female were up to 3 days before ovulation and intercoursed she'd not get preg as plan B prevented ovulation. Preg can happen up to 3 days later w/out protection, but if ovulation happened before the act, it's too late.

I'm just wondering, because of not2late's words about crimes going unpunished why "they" couldn't make it a little harder to get? Let me go back and read the article (probably should have done that first hehe).

OK read the article and while I really don't think it will promote "more" promiscuity (sp) I think it will tell people that it is now ok to have unprotected sex. "If I do this now, I'll just run to the pharmacy in the morning and take care of it, no need to stop and worry about a condom" Anyway this is just my little opinion on this subject.

                                Re: Plan B

I know this is a sore subject but I just gotta post!

I think that the Plan B being available without an Rx is a good thing - only to those who will be using it correctly. Personally, I have used this a few times before when I was younger because things have slipped off or broke, etc. For whatever the reason, each time I had to go to one of those "im having sex but my parents cant know clinics" (planned parenthood) and pay over $100 for the 2 pills, but I would rather do that then become prego. And each time you have to go there and basically get a pap and wait for test results before they even give it to you, then they make you feel bad because you have to take this pill within 72 hours and the test results arent in. Which I think is POINTLESS!? Why make a 72 hour pill when you cant get it in 72 hours? So I think thats a great reason for why its available without Rx - atleast you have a chance to get it and take it before its too late.
But for the others who dont use it for the right reasons - those who dont use protection or didnt want to stop (sorry if too graphic here) so Oh ok i will just go and pick it up at the local Pharmacy....thats where it will be abused.

Also I think either way young people are going to do whatever they want to do. I dont think this being available over the counter will stop young kids from having sex when they are 9 like they are nowdays or whatever the age may be. But I do believe that this gives people who actually need it, a chance, after an accident occurs.

It goes both ways - But i'm all for it because I know that i've been there and taken the steps I could to prevent possible pregnancy but sometimes things happen. All I know is that every single time I have had to use this, it was more than 72 hours after the situation because of having to wait. Which brings the percentage from 89 to about .1 or something if its after 72 hours.

This probably didnt sound right because I got to anxious about this subject so SORRY IF I OFFENDED ANYONE!
