    Re: Spelling & Grammar Online

I feel like I'm a member of the spelling and grammar police. One of my pet hates is people who can't write properly. Whether it's online or not, people still have to read it, so I feel people should at least make an effort!

Okaaaay......since others are kvetching I will add my personal peeve. Since this Board deals primarily with weight loss, the use of the word "loose" sometimes makes me crazy, as in: "I can't believe how much weight I'm loosing. I've never been able to loose weight before." It's lose. Lose! Loose is what your pants are now. Heee.

That's my mini-rant. Sometimes people get excited and misspell words and that's understandable. Sometimes I re-read my own posts and say "d'oh! You boob!" lol But the chronic misuse of loose is a bit irritating to me.

me too! and thats why I write "released" or "release" my weight because I am never sure how to spell lose!

Rich - I've been told that "sth" means something. I didn't know what it was for the longest time either. lol

Hmm so that's another one of those American/English/Australian differences.

            Like colour, neighbour, honour?
I am not american so I also spell them colour, neighbour, honour...this is not jsut english/austrailian but Canadian as well. there are also fibre, metre, litre....etc

But i would still spell 'spelt as spelled' spelt just doens't sound right to me. i guess it's just personal preference.

I hadn't actually noticed this one..LOL but of course now I will.

The one on the board that drives me nuts is Adkins instead of Atkins...unless of course this is the proper spelling in another country too?

Ahh, Sadie you beat me to it! I just thought of 'Adkins', came to post and you already had it, lol

Sometimes it infuriates me so much, I want to scream at the person who wrote it lol.

ok, I know how frustrating it must be for some of you! But, I do want to point out something here. Learning Disabilities. They are real and effect many more people then alot are aware of. I am one of them and I know I am not alone. I have been here MANY years and still have to look up (stops to find stickie) alcohol, everytime I type it. There are certain words that I cannot spell and will never be able to. Point blank. That is it. So, always try to keep in mind..........."It's the thought that counts".
My son would love to be apart of this board, but refuses to join or post (and he has lost 135 pounds......YEAH I AM PROUD!) he is a severe dyslexic, dyspraxic, and dysnoxic.

Ahhh, this is a great thread!

I agree with the no punctuation thing. I get so frustrated! Because I really want to read their post but can't understand ANY OF IT! Then I get to the point where I will read it out loud and see if I can make sense of it.....doesn't work too well!

I guess I will admit - I get alot of words mixed up when i'm typing a big ol' post. Because i'm so focused on what i'm trying to say that I just let my fingers run and don't watch!

Sorry Bren. We didn't mean to pick on anyone with spelling problems. I know that one of our smartest and most respected members here has spelling issues and we don't love her any less for it.

Can we still complain if we keep it light and friendly? (oy! I almost misspelled friendly)

                          Vent Away!

I just wanted to point that out. Did not mean to put a damper on things! But, I did feel it was worth bringing up. I deal with LD on a daily basis and have LEARNT (ok, kidding) so much about it and I honestly believe where the Lord closes a door he opens a window.
There is a book out called "The Gift of Dyslexia". So worth reading for anyone.

This is something that bugs me also. The spelling and grammer doesn't bother me otherwise. I do see "waist" instead of "waste" a lot and "weigh to go" rather than "way to go" but think that is just a play on words.
