Re: "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

I have to be honest however sometimes I feel like saying that right now ..I am freaking tired and cranky!!!! Screaming at the top of my lungs a good "FU AHOLE" might just help put things in perspective for me!!!

I will not do that because really I am nice

Do it! In fact, yell it twice, once for you and once for me.

Happy Holidays for the same reason Julirama mentions. I say Merry Christmas to the people I know for sure are Christians, but I think it's more polite and respectful to use Happy Holidays with strangers.

Ahhhh... So many people, so many choices, so many different situations....

At the spur of the moment, I might be inclined to recite the most recently read card in the latest shop I'd patronised (or read in the mail, or heard, etc., but to be 'politically correct' it seems last year that 'happy holidays' and seasons greetings' were most popular.

There's a chance any other choice might be mal-accepted. One thing, one language, IS understood by all people ( well I hope so) everywhere: LOVE.
Another.... PEACE....

Re: "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas"

I'm not sure that shop assistants say anything here. I must listen out, maybe they do. Usually it'll either be no speaking at all, simply "There's your change" or a moan about the weather or their long hours is more likely than a seasonal greeting.

One of the most extraordinary things about visiting the US is the friendliness and helpfulness of store assistants, and all service people for that matter. I know the Irish have a reputation for being friendly but unless you are
a. a tourist in a tourist-type shop (when they fall over themselves to be friendly) or
b. Spending a fortune in a very high end store
you are unlikely to be on the receiving end of much bon homie.

I say Happy Christmas. Which is odd, because I'm not a Christian, I am not an anything. I like Christmas though, so I just say it out of habit.

I prefer Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays after Christmas. It's a personal preference since I am Christian and it reminds me of the true reason for the season.

I prefer Merry Christmas...but I understand its safer for the stores to say Happy Holidays...it covers more Holiday's then Christmas

I honestly don't mind either way. Being Jewish and all, I have gotten so used to people saying Merry Christmas to me and I just respond back politely with a "Merry Christmas to you too!! Have a nice night." I love wearing my black furred santa hat, it's cute. =P I'll post a pic, I promise.
