  • Has anyone read 'Fat Girl' by Judith Moore

I just finished it this morning whilst I was eating my breakfast - it is such a sad book!

I bought it because I thought it might be a good encouraging weightloss story (like the William Leith one sort of was) but it's not. It's about a woman's lifelong battle with her weight which was very obviously caused by a very troubled childhood and parents who just seemed incapable of loving her. It was also very hard to read about how other children bullied and judged her because of her size and the way she was always lonely.

Anyway I wouldn't strictly recommend it as such, but is was a revealing insight. I get the feeling the author (Judith Moore) may be well known in the US - is that right? Has anyone read this or 'Never Eat Your Heart Out?' which she also wrote - which I haven't read. If so, what did you think?

This sounds kind of like "Passing for Thin". I can't read books like this according to my DBF, since they end up making me feel worse about myself - to the point where I don't want to eat so I can stop being fat...

Anyway, just my $0.02. If you liked that book, then you'd probably really love the one I read.

          Lyssie,

I can see what you mean. I did'nt really enjoy it realy - it was too intense.

Though it's about weight, it is more about difficult childhood - really she could have had problems with drugs or alcohol or any number of things. It's emotional eating. Fortunately I've never suffered from this, but it made me understand more why people do it.

Yeah, Passing for Thin was an emotional eating story.. I mean, her dad didn't leave when she was 3, and stuff, but it was talking about like, her family and why she ate and then basically the things that she did to herself the entire time and then when she lost the weight her view on things and life and everything.

Oh, I definately have major issues with emotional eating and I know for a fact it stems from a bad childhood. When I was in college, I would get eat until I threw up every time I talked to my mom on the phone. I didn't physically force myself to throwup, I would just eat that much. It's a very, very hard thing to overcome and I wish I knew how. I haven't spoken to my mother in almost 12 years, but the habit is very ingrained now.

                Hi Cynthia,

That sounds like a really hard thing to deal with. I don't think I really understood how far emotional eating could go until I read this. I thought it was like 'oh I feel a bit low, I'll eat a piece of cake', but really it can be much more extreme.

If you feel like you need support for emotional eating, have you looked at the emotional eating forum here:
