how old are we talking here? I hear my mom say all the time that when you are old you are invisible and I'd HATE to feel that way. I really really don't want to make it to where I DEPEND on diapers and someone to change them (I worked in a nursing home, it ain't pretty) Retirement scares me becuase there's noise about social security being nonexistent by then.

prolly just how bad my arthritis could get, i can cope with it BECAUSE i'm young, i guess when i'm old, that changes.

I guess being old and lonely would kinda suck too!

Re: What frightens you most about getting old?

What's funny is that just the other night I looked over at Geoff and said despondently, "I wish I could be Peter Pan." I don't want to grow old, not because of what will happen to my body, but because of how am supposed to act when I'm "old," and how I'm supposed to dress when I'm "old," and how people will treat me and look at me when I'm "old."

I'm looking forward to the life-experiences of being older and growing old--having a family, going back to school, establishing myself in my career, becoming financially secure, retiring, spending time doing what I want to do, etc. I just don't want to have to change who I am, what I like, or what I do, because of a silly number. And I guess I don't have to change, but often those who act younger than their age aren't seen as refreshing or creative, but juvenile, a little nutty, and in denial.

I used to say, I couldnt wait to be old as then I could have lots of fun annoying people by pretending to be deaf.

(but that is a quote I stole from the classic british comedy BLACKADDER)

Looking it! I just turned 50 and I'm blessed to still look a bit younger, so I enjoy the surprised comments. I'm dreading the day when nobody tells me I look good for my age anymore. (How vain is that?)

I think just not having my family around anymore...
Let's face it, parents can't live forever, and since I opted not to have children of my own....I'm afraid the last person I'll see when I leave this world will be my Nurse assistant.... :-(

I am old, Rich: ancient in the Army; but when I retire just a few weeks before my 60th birthday I will be a young man again (well, relatively.) And I intend to take my pension for a L O N G time, and you will pay me!

So I don't want UK to go bust!
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                        he said, 'Don't count calories.'

I work in a nursing home and I guess what scares me the most about getting old is dementia .......... people being afraid of me because I don't make sense anymore and losing contact with my family and friends ......... there is a slight few that get daily or even weekly visitors but some go weeks and weeks with no visits at all ........ it's just so sad .........

That I will look back one day and regret the things I was afraid to do.

                            That I lose my strength.

I am working VERY HARD RIGHT NOW to keep both of these things from happening.
