  • Do you like reading?

    Hey all,

I love reading so I thought I'd ask:
    - what are you reading at the mo (and no, I don't mean this exact moment in time, i.e. this thread before all you jokers leap in with that - *coughRicht*)?
    - what is your fave book ever? Actually you can have more than one
    - what is your least fave book ever?

    Mine are:
    - Moby Dick - urghhhhh - for a reading group. Is good, but l-o-n-g
    - Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - LOVE it. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens. Also A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers and the Gormenghast series by Mervin (Melvyn?) Peake. Uh, on the lighter side the Adrian Mole and Bridget Jones diaries are both great.
    - The Stand by Stephen King - weird and boring and l-o-n-g. Um, can't think of any others at the mo...

I've not read it - but heard of it. Great title . I read his 'One Hit Wonderland' which was good, though not as good as the Fridge one, I've heard. 'Beating the Maldovans At Tennis' is a similar idea. Sp prob wrong there.

I, too, love the Stephanie Plum series. I always read Diana Mott Davison, Linda Fairstein, Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Patricia Cornwell. These are all mysteries, some serious, some silly.

However, my absolute favorite book series in the world starts with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. I read it first about ten years ago and also the two books that followed. I've thought about it all those years and have wanted to continue on to the next three books, but had forgotten too many details from the first. So, finally, a couple of weeks ago, I read it again and now I'm on the third book. I can't say enough about the depth of the characters. It's a fascinating read for the history and the best love story I've ever read. You just want to crawl into the books and live with the characters, they're so real.

I was going to list "playing the Moldovans at tennis" as another of my favourites. I own them both and I think they are brilliant.

Both books were done for a bet basically. I have the 1 hit wonder book too, but havent bothered reading it yet.

              Hey Jane,

You're right - Sophie Kinsella is great as we've said before. I can really see you in Becky Bloomwood too - but that's good - she's very happy and sociable

Da Vinci Code was interesting - but I didn't really like his style. The chapters are so short you get sucked into reading loads at a time.

I've not heard of Nicholas Sparks - I'll have to keep my eye out. I love a good weepie. Atonement made me cry more than any book ever.

I'm a big reader. Mostly sci-fi/fantasy or mysteries, but I'll read pretty much anything.

Currently reading Dead Heat by Dick Francis (one of my 3 favorite authors, this book just came out, and I was so excited to see it let me tell you!)

I don't know that I have a favorite book. Probably anything by Dick Francis, Terry Pratchett or Orson Scott Card.

Hard to pick out a least favorite book too. I like most things and in the rare case I don't like it I just stop reading it and get something else.

Sounds good - when is it set?

I know what you mean about having to re-read to get back into a series.

I like Terry Pratchett too - I particularly like the witchey ones

Good point - why read something you don't enjoy. For me with The Stand it was because I was trying to read the top 100 best books of the 20th century. I wonder how many I made in the end...

I LOVE the Stephanie Plum Series also! If you like those books you would like the Bubbles series by Sara Strohmeyer http://www.sarahstrohmeyer.com/bubbles.html. Her character "Bubbles" is alot like Stephanie Plum.

I am a HUGE reader. I spend alot of my summer going to Book Sales - I guess there are worse things to be addicted to - ha ha. I like Patricia Cronwell but unfortunately I have read all her books, Sandra Brown (the one who wrote Chill Factor not the harlequin one), James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark. There are too many to list! I will have to try some of the Sophie Kinsella books. They sound fun!

Alexa, Diana Gabaldon's series begins in the 18th century, starting near the time of the Scottish "Rising" of 1745. There's a fascinating element of time travel to make it even better, though. Sounds hoaky, but it's extremely well-written.
