  • Are you afraid to give away your fat clothes?

As a person who has been on a myriad amount of diets, I've developed the habit of storing clothes for whichever period my body will be in (average or fat) out of fear of gaining the weight back (which I've done numerous times). This clothes collection has grown over the years as I've lost weight and gained back double each time (and even more so since my thyroid went wacko which I'm sure is from all the excessive dieting over the years). I'm just wondering when (not if) I reach my goal with Atkins will I be afraid to give away those "fat" clothes? I don't consider this a diet but a WOL but it doesn't keep me feeling some of the emotions of being fat (and/or feeling fat) for so many years of my life.

Anyone else who has dealt with this?

I think we all probably have those fears, i didnt throw them away last time and i gained it all back...

This time theyre gone and i refuse to buy any bigger clothes, if these get tight i'll just hafta to get my fat butt back on a diet... which wont happen, cos im a Atkins lifer!

      All gone
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
      he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Mine are gone too I'm not keeping a thing .......... it would almost feel to me as if I was preparing to fail which is not an option. For me the problem was feeling guilty giving someone clothes that were to big for me as if it might feel insulting to them that I thought they needed clothes my old size ........ I really struggled with it. Then I realised I would have been happy to be given a bag of nice clothes and still would regardless of my size and that it wa smy issue with my insecurities not theirs .......... so they are gone!!!!!!

I tossed them. If they are there I will let myself wane on my woe. I can't afford to buy new clothes very often so if I toss the fat clothes, I have no choice but to keep fit....it was really scary and empowering at the same time.

It seems like if I kept them, I was admitting in advance that I was going to fail. All gone. As I "outgrow" each item, it goes.

Like Emma i refused to buy new clothes too..if my butt can't get in them..then it's time to get my act together!

threw them all out. did keep one pair of jeans for a bit, and every once in a while when i'd think i hadn't come very far in my losses i'd try them on. good ego booster.

I got rid of them the first time...gained back the weight...then had to buy new fat clothes. This time I might hold on to a few pair of jeans....maybe for a few months after I am in maintenance.

Tossed them all except a couple of t-shirts that I sleep in and to remind me of how far i've come on my journey. I'm with Disco and Bren, no saftey net here either and it really is empowering and scary all at once when you toss'em. Like Emma said, if the clothes get too tight, it's time to get my fat butt back on a diet. Holding on to them is like giving yourself permission to fail.

i didn't deal with it long, that's for sure! when i got into smaller sizes, i tossed, gave away, sent them to other adbb members.... i got them out of my house. there was no turning back. if i gain past 10 pounds now, i've got no pants to wear but sweats and i am not shopping in sweats!

Re: Are you afraid to give away your fat clothes?

I WAS afraid, but I am doing it anyways... the first set was my most recently purchased, expensive, very beautiful fat clothes and it made me very sad at first. Then I let go of them, realizing I really don't need them any more. I will never go back to that horrible out of control place because now I understand why I got fat in the first place. (Low fat dieting etc...) and now I have the ability, knowlege and power to do this forever.
Now I'm really getting into the tossing and throwing thing. It's quite freeing and lovely to have more space and room in my closet.
Also I'm delighted to be able to shop and buy new beautiful clothes in smaller sizes.

As I write this I think about the corelation between hording food and hording clothes. We need to realize we have enough and rest in that knowlege and trust that God or your higher power will provide for your needs.
