Re: A successful Halloween on plan? You can do it!

That is great Cleo. Halloween candy is SUCH a non-issue (as are Christmas cookies etc). I can't say it enough- I think people focus on 'holidays' for the wrong reasons. Play-doh is a great idea.

Re: A successful Halloween on plan? You can do it!

I gave out mini bags of microwave popcorn. I love the playdough idea. I am going to do that next year. Halloween is not one of my favorite holidays. My kids become sugar addicts in a matter of minutes. I always end up tossing the candy or giving it away. Every other holiday is easy to limit the sugar consumption but Halloween is just hard. The kids get sugar at school, the neighbors, friends, etc. I have always wanted to hand out tooth brushes but I am afraid my house would get egged or something.

Alliecat-- Sandooch gave me that idea! She is the best! I was thinking about giving out gum this year, and ended up doing that instead. I didn't know what kind of reception I'd get, especially with so many older kids, but everyone I could overhear walking away was really happy with Play-Dough. I mean what the heck! It smells great!

MomtoFour-- The popcorn idea is so fun! And I so agree! Kids get sugar-spazzed far too easily. I'm going to put their stashes into baggies today so we can portion them out. I don't think they need the sugar rushes and crashes.

And my hubby learned last night (as did my kids) that some of the coolest thiongs to give on Halloween have nothing to do with food.

I worked last night so my treat was some soup I made before class. I had candy for the teens, but you know, as soon as it went into the bowl it was gone. Thank you Lord !!!

I am lucky, my kids are not sugar-crazed. Even my seven-year-old told me this am while waiting for the bus that his candy will probably last at least a month, and he only got a small amount compared to what some kids get.

My kids are the same way, g-mom! They went out for about an hour (the homes are far apart) and were pretty much done by then. It also doesn't hurt that it was cold! LOL! At least it didn't snow...

My daughter is downstairs singing karaoke right now. Which has nothing to do with anything, but at 5, that's pretty cute!

I just noticed this thread was gone from the main forum and found it here. Would it be possible to leave a direct in the main forum so that people who were following this thread could find it?

It's a pretty timely holiday discussion, and I never would have thought to look for it here.

                      I appreciate your consideration!

Re: How Did You Celebrate Halloween Without Candy?

Haha going back to the "old" trick-or-treaters...I was one of those kids. Heck, I even went trick or treating in college one year (even though it was just to a friend's neighborhood, and instead of candy he gave us beer). But I will say, I put SOOOOO much effort into my costumes it was crazy! One year I made a mummy suit. I mean I ripped up sheets, dyed them in tea, the whole nine yards. One year I was a wizard, and made a hat and a wand and a fancy robe.

So I am a bit guilty when I read your angry posts about kids who are too old...<blushing>

I hate it when kids don't dress up. It's like, gawd how hard is it to put on a mask and dress weirdly? Minus the mask, I do that everyday.

I WISH my parents wouldn't have let me go crazy on candy. I used to go trick-or-treating with my cousins, and fill a pillowcase and a half! We would be out for at LEAST 4 hours...and my parents never controlled how much I could eat--because they're candy junkies, too. It would have been nice to NOT have these horrible habits ingrained and reinforced during my childhood. Looking back, all my parents did was set me up to be fat and/or diabetic.

                        Thanks mom and dad!

I passed out Playdo too! I knew that my trick-or-treaters (all 3 of them) would have tons of candy, so they got little tubs of Playdo. Such a good idea!

Funny, people kept coming to me offering me candy and I would take and then give to someone else. I only had to deal with it at work. I got through day and I'm here to tell the story, I was not a bit bothered by the candy floating around. Then again candy was never my issue, chocolate cake and brownies were. I'm so proud of myself and everyone that got through the day successfully.

Our band played a gig at the convention center, so candy wasn't a factor at all. We played for a group of rabbit breeders. When I first got there, I snuck a peek into the exhibit hall. There were 20,000 rabbits there. It was all I could do to not stay there and kiss all their cute fuzzy noses! That would've been a nice way to spend Halloween.

I did fine also. We went to friends out in the country and had a party. Since it was mostly adults, we had a pot luck and barbeques
