  • Welcome... Me!

    Hey all,

I’m a wife and mother of two living in AlbuquerqueNM. I'm currently on my 8th day of a not so clean induction but I've somehow managed to lose 10 pounds! My hubby is also on his 8th day and he's already lost over 15 pounds!!! I'm expecting the weight loss to slow down but I feel ready for it. I'm still suffering from major cravings, I haven’t given into any of them but I’m on the look out for low carb substitutes. I tried the mock danish and was delighted to find out it wasn’t so bad! I’m still enjoying 1 cup of coffee with sugar free creamer in the morning along with the occasional sugar free cup of Jello. Other then that (and one night of drinking a bit too much wine) I’ve done pretty well. I’ve decided to quite drinking alcohol altogether for awhile and I’m in the process of weaning myself off of coffee.

I’ve been heavy most of my life but after the birth of my second son (4 years ago) I got on Depo Provera and gained 65 lbs in 3 months. Turns out my body doesn’t like Depo Provera! Lol… I’ve been unable to lose ANY weight until about 8 months ago when I tried the diet drug phentermine; I took about 8 pills total but that must have jump started something, within 2-3 months I had lost 45 lbs not doing much at all… The weight loss had stopped even though I continued to work out daily and eat healthfully until now. (note to all: diet drugs are not the way to go!! ) Oh and I walk/jog 2-4 miles every morning and try to drink lots of h2o.

I’m currently at 227, my over all goal is 150lbs… My first mini goal is to get to 200lbs… You all are very inspirational, I look forward to learning from you...
    Wish me luck!

Great post. Glad you found us and joined and posted.
You are doing great, but try to get away from giving into sweet cravings cause if you don't, you'll continue to battle it from now on. I know what I'm talking about cause its a constant battle for me and I have been doing this for 2 years.
Also watch out for junk low carb foods. They are real stall makers.

Welcome to ADBB! Sounds like you're off to a good start!

You're probably still suffering from major cravings because you're eating sweets, even if they are sugar free your body won't stop craving them until you get your system cleaned out, try giving them up for a while, you might be surprised how quickly the cravings disappear!

              Hey guys,

Thanks for your encouragement! Because I've been having such a hard time with my cravings, I think I will take your advice and stay away from all sweeteners.

While I was driving home from work this evening I caught myself thinking "ooo, as soon as I'm off this diet I'm going to go there!" ~ I was looking at Taco Bell dreaming of a bean burrito... So I also need to work on making this a permanent change - This isn't a diet, it's a life style change... I know this but it's still hard for it to sink in...
              Again, thanks!

                    Re: Welcome... Me!

Welcome to you! I am a new forum user, also! I have been on Atkins for 11 months and can remember those cravings all too well. But here's is some encouragement: the cravings DO go away, and as long as you stick to it, they won't come back. But every time you cheat, it's like starting over, at least for me, and that's what keeps me on the right track. Oh, and about the low carb sweets - they give me and all my Atkins friends the MAJOR stomach cramps! No fun!
You are right about the diet pills...they aren't the way to go. I finally figured that out after a bout of major headaches, a few times waking up in the floor after passing out and a heck of a sprained ankle.
Good luck! You are doing great!

I wish I'd get stomach cramps from the low carb snacks! I tried really hard to stay away from junk today but I ended up having a diet coke and 2 jello cups... Guess I didn't try THAT hard or else I woudn't have had them! lol...
Sounds like your experience w/ diet drugs is enough to make anyone steer clear of them! I'm glad to hear you've been doing Atkins for so long ~ you and many others on this board give me hope that I might actually be able to do this!

welcome to ADBB and to Atkins

yep kill the sweet tooth and your Atkins will go much easier.

Love your early realization this is a permenant change in your way of eating not a change to goal and return to the old eating cause you don't want a return of the old heavier you too.

Welcome to ADBB! I, too, was doing a not so clean (okay really dirty!) version of Atkins. In the last 2 weeks I have made sure that I am getting in all of the veggies, keeping an eye on cheese and creamer count, and keeping up with how much splenda I am using each day. I don't know which one of these did it for me, but I do not crave sweets at all now. In the last week, I have been given chocolates, chocolate, chocolates, and have attended parties, parties, parties and I have been able to say no thank you without the urge to try just one. It is amazing!
Try the clean induction for the two weeks. It will break your cravings!

                            Re: Welcome... Me!

HI !! It sounds like you are off to a great start! But you also sound a lot like me when I first started this thing... just before Thanksgiving I decided I was going to begin induction... I cheated on Thanksgiving day and again a few days later... then I found myself eating pretty much exactly as I had been...

then something hit me! If I wanted to be successful at this, I needed to get all the temptations out of my house! I cleaned out my cupboards, and my fridge, and filled them with induction friendly foods. (not too many veggies, just enough to last until my next shopping trip - didn't want them to spoil before I got to eat them!) I kept a few things for my daughter, but they are mainly things that I don't care for...

Previously, I had the mind-set that if I just had a bite of this and a crumb of that, it wouldn't hurt... then once I cheated it turned into "well... I already cheated, so I might as well eat this... I'll get back into induction tomorrow" AND NOW, those things are out of my house and it's so much easier! If I get into the mood to munch, I've got cheese cubes, and veggies cut up so that they are ready to eat. (if I don't cut them up and get them ready to just grab and eat, they won't work when I've got the munchies... I don't want to "fix" anything, I just want to EAT something)

I've found that after staying away from those things, I can actually resist them when I am confronted with them outside my house... (you know, visiting family and friends or even at my daughters dance recital - lots of candy and cookies!)

SO when someone says "the cravings will go away" I can honestly say THEY DO!! I didn't really believe them at first, but now, I'm a believer!

Good luck, I'm sure that you can be successful at this, with a bit of focus and a little bit of pre-planning - this will be a breeze!

Hey guys, Thanks for all of your encouraging words! I know I'm not the only one who struggles but it's easy to forget that while your lunging toward an innocent child yelling "give me that cookie!"

I've done better staying away from junk...almost... I've started putting heavy cream w/ a dash of splenda in my morning cup of joe. I think my body handles that better than the sugar free creamer... and I've managed to say no to Jello!

I've only lost 2 lbs this week, making a total of 12 lbs lost for my 'dirty' induction. I still have two 'official' days of induction left but I think I'm going to start over. I'm going to do a CLEAN induction - no coffee or sugar free anything for at least two weeks! Also, I had discovered cream cheese and ham rolls... I noticed I'd feel really puffy and flushed after eating those so no more of that either! I didn't eat that or the Jello my first week when I lost 10lbs. I also noticed my ankles have been swollen, so much that if I push on them it leaves indentions... anybody have a problem with this?

I think I'll take your advice Angel and get rid off all dangerous food... and make sure I have healthy things to grab - like cut up veggies... I'll keep ya'll posted on how my new and improved induction goes! Good luck to all my fellow low carbers!
