  • Been there, done it, trying it again.....

This is my second go at the adkins diet, I tried it once and lost 25lbs but it caused me to be a depressed emotional wreck. Anyone else have this problem? I finally gave up and went back to carbs and wreckless overeating and packed on 35 lbs. About a month ago I started watching what I ate, limiting portions and tried to eat healthier, I tried hard and didn't cheat and found that I actually put on a few pounds. Talk about a blow. Well over the weekend I decided protien was going to be my friend whether it wanted to or not, I made omelets with lots of fresh vegetables, turkey and salsa that kept me full most of the day. For dinner I had chicken and fresh veggies with just a little bit of rice. I did this for two days, TWO, and my energy level shot through the roof not to mention that somehow I dropped 5 pounds reaching my one month goal when I originally started the other diet a month ago. After that I made up my mind, I am doing the adkins...that doesn't mean I'm going to sit and eat a ton of fatty foods and count every carb that comes across my plate but I am going to put an emphasis on protien and cut out things like bread and potatoes and as much sugar as possible. Wish me luck, I hope we can all get to a place where we are comfortable with our weight, appearance and overall health.

Congrats on realyzing carbs are the ememy.

But you you are not doing Atkins as Atkins is a ketogenic plan ( that means high fat foods). Protein on atkins is limited to 30% of your total calories. If you'd like to do a high protein loc carb plan we have a sister board and it is full of low carb plans other then atkins folk.

I too realized that carbs made me tired, sleepy, and fatigue but they were to darn good to give up. Well 70 pounds of good tasting food on my butt and thighs is not fun anymore. Congrats to you for trying!

To quote Yoda: Do or do not. There is no try.

To tell you what happened when you were a "depressed wreck" we would nee to know about what you did, what you ate, what your life was like at that time. And there are many causes for depressed feelings, such as feeling frustraed because we let ourselves turn fat, or realizing that being thin doesn't mend our broken lives but we have to do so.

If you want to do Atkins, you have to read the book (DANDR or Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 ed) and to follow the plan exactly as it is written or it won't work. And it isn't a quick fix or diet to just lose pounds. It is a meidcal plan, a whole way of eating and living differently, which requires that you put effort and willpower into it. If you are willing to commit yourself to a new way of life, this will work for you. But that means cuting out sugar _completely_ and an emphasis on fat, not protein.

If you want to go and live th healthy Atkins way, go, grab the book, read the stickies in this forum, and just do it. If you do not feel comfortable with the Atkins rules, you might want to check into another low carb eating plan. Take a choice, and stick to it. If you are going Atkins, we are all here for you to answer your questions and help you alomg your way.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone....I am moving over to the low carb board as my diet is a little unconventional. I am trying to make a life change, not just diet to get a result. I don't feel comfortable with eating lots of fat, I want to become comfortable with eating the right meats, more dairy, whole grains, and vegetables. Hopefully my habits will rub off on my husband and son, I'm afraid to put an emphasis on fat for the simple fact of setting an example for my son, I don't want him to pick up the fats without losing the carbs....seeing as how he is 11, I don't think he would benefit from the atkins plan nor should he try. Thanks everyone...Good Luck!
