Hi! My name is Julie and I just started doing Atkins, but it's been somewhat modified by my doctor. I'm 24 years old and just recently found out that I have hyperinsulemia and am insulin resistant. It was a shock to me as I just went to the doctor for a routine thyroid checkup. (I also have hypothyroidism.) Anyway, my doctor just happens to be this great lady named Mary Vernon who co-wrote The Atkins Diabetes Revolution, and she has started me on this diet. I have very high hopes after looking at the results some of you have posted here. I have quite a bit of weight to lose as well as the other health issues and had been very discouraged for quite a while because it seemed like no matter what I did, I gained weight. I think I put on 70 lbs in 5 months time due to my health problems, and as you can imagine, I was very scared because I had no idea what was going on with me.
Before Dr. Vernon found out that I had hyperinsulemia, I just thought it was the thyroid or the fact that I had been on the depo shot that kept me from losing weight. People kept telling me that once I got the shot out of my system or started on thyroid replacement that the weight would just come off, but that just didn't happen. In fact, things just went downhill from there. It got to the point where I couldn't get out of bed and my old doctor thought I had Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue. I just hurt all the time and was so tired and depressed. I had to drop out of college and I was too sick to work. It was a really bad time in my life. But now, things are starting to lift. I have hope again. I have hope that I can get back to my original weight (or maybe even smaller!) and feel better. And I could really use some support as I go through this.
Dr. Vernon is a very good doctor and because she is so good, she is very busy, so I don't want to take up more of her time with all my questions. That's why I'm here!! I've already learned so much from all of you just by reading the posts and I like the sense of camaraderie I get when I'm reading. I'm on day 4 of my "modified" induction and I don't feel so good. I think by what I've read so far that I am experiencing sugar withdrawal. It feels so bad!!! I feel like I have the flu, exhaustion, and PMS all wrapped into one. Is it always this bad?
Anyway, I mostly just wanted to introduce myself and give you all a little overview of my situation. So HI and THANKS for having me!! ~ Julie
PS. I say "modified" induction because I'm not sure what real induction consists of yet. Don't worry. The other Atkins books are at the top of my reading list. Dr. Vernon just wrote me a list of things to eat and at what time of day and I'm sticking strictly to it. Oh and LOTS OF WATER!!!
