  • Another Newbie!

Hi! My name is Julie and I just started doing Atkins, but it's been somewhat modified by my doctor. I'm 24 years old and just recently found out that I have hyperinsulemia and am insulin resistant. It was a shock to me as I just went to the doctor for a routine thyroid checkup. (I also have hypothyroidism.) Anyway, my doctor just happens to be this great lady named Mary Vernon who co-wrote The Atkins Diabetes Revolution, and she has started me on this diet. I have very high hopes after looking at the results some of you have posted here. I have quite a bit of weight to lose as well as the other health issues and had been very discouraged for quite a while because it seemed like no matter what I did, I gained weight. I think I put on 70 lbs in 5 months time due to my health problems, and as you can imagine, I was very scared because I had no idea what was going on with me.

Before Dr. Vernon found out that I had hyperinsulemia, I just thought it was the thyroid or the fact that I had been on the depo shot that kept me from losing weight. People kept telling me that once I got the shot out of my system or started on thyroid replacement that the weight would just come off, but that just didn't happen. In fact, things just went downhill from there. It got to the point where I couldn't get out of bed and my old doctor thought I had Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue. I just hurt all the time and was so tired and depressed. I had to drop out of college and I was too sick to work. It was a really bad time in my life. But now, things are starting to lift. I have hope again. I have hope that I can get back to my original weight (or maybe even smaller!) and feel better. And I could really use some support as I go through this.

Dr. Vernon is a very good doctor and because she is so good, she is very busy, so I don't want to take up more of her time with all my questions. That's why I'm here!! I've already learned so much from all of you just by reading the posts and I like the sense of camaraderie I get when I'm reading. I'm on day 4 of my "modified" induction and I don't feel so good. I think by what I've read so far that I am experiencing sugar withdrawal. It feels so bad!!! I feel like I have the flu, exhaustion, and PMS all wrapped into one. Is it always this bad?

Anyway, I mostly just wanted to introduce myself and give you all a little overview of my situation. So HI and THANKS for having me!! ~ Julie

PS. I say "modified" induction because I'm not sure what real induction consists of yet. Don't worry. The other Atkins books are at the top of my reading list. Dr. Vernon just wrote me a list of things to eat and at what time of day and I'm sticking strictly to it. Oh and LOTS OF WATER!!!

    Re: Another Newbie!

    WELCOME JULIE!

Glad you found us, and I'm glad you found the right doctor! My daughter is your age and has been to many doctors for hairloss and weight gain (30 pounds in 6 months) but so far, they are not coming up with anything.

She dispises meat so she is cutting sugar but she's eating alot of eggs and she does like skinless, boneless chicken breast so I have to find creative ways to make it for her (she is going for her masters and lives home to save while she pays for school) anyway, I hope you stay with us, I am on week 3 I lost 11 pounds and 12 inches doing boot camp on this site.

I didn't go through the "flu" like feelings like you are experiencing, but that should go away in a few days and will be replaced with loads of energy and self control

Are you able to take supplements like a good multivitamin/mineral and some essential oils? that might help, you may be low on a certain vitamin, let your doctor know if you still feel lousy by Monday.

Chicken pieces are gorgeous sprayed with olive oil, sprinked with herbs (rosemary, sage, oregano, marjoram are all nice) and baked in an ovenproof dish in the oven. Or you can wrap chicken, cheese (whateve allowed type is your favousite) and mushroom (or chilli, or peppers, whatever!) in ham/bacon, secure with toothpicks and bake in the oven. Seriously delicious with baked carrot, parsnip, onion or any vegetable you can have.

        Hey there,

Welcome to the board. Wow!! you've found a great doctor!! Yep sounds like you are having induction flu. Your body is busy kicking out all those bad things. Drink LOTS of water and get some exercise and it should help. Usually those icky feelings only last a couple of days, so don't get discouraged. Stick with us, and keep your good attitude and you will be amazed at your results.
Also go to the 14 day induction thread and print of the list of allowed foods. This will help you as you go along.

        keep up the great work

                  Re: Another Newbie!

                  Thanks everybody!!

I wanted to tell you that I did get over those "flu-ish" symptoms, but it took FIVE days!! Then I went straight into PMS, so it hasn't been a great couple of weeks, but the eating has gotten better and it's so crazy to be able to taste things!!! I mean, I don't even need dressing on my salad anymore because I can just enjoy the taste of the lettuce. That is very strange for me, but very cool. I don't know how much weight I've lost so far because I don't go back to the doc to get weighed until Saturday, but I'm hoping for good news. I'm so bloated from the PMS that it doesn't feel like I've lost anything. Plus, I lapsed on my thyroid medicine for a day or two and by the time I got it, I can tell you, I was really missing it. I guess I just wanted to say THANKS and tell you how much I enjoy "lurking" here.

PS I think the Before and Afters are so impressive and I've been a little shy about posting, but when I see how much there is to gain (or lose!!) from all the support here, I'm motivated to post more. So here's to a long and happy future here at ADBB.

Glad the Induction Flu passed, I had about 4 day of that! It was pretty bad, I just soaked in a hot tub, and tried to drink my weight in water. I have been feeling so good this week, its amazing. Can you exercise? If so, what do you like to do?
What would we do without it?
