  • New to Akins

Hi. I'm Jessica. I am starting the Atkins diet tomorrow! I know I should have just done it already, but I really wanted to get in the right mindset. I am really worried about keeping the variety of the food good enought that I just don't give up. My husband Jason and my son Erick are doing it with me, so we are all here to support each other. Jason isn't as in to all this as we are though. I've read throught he message boards and have seen some great advice. I hope I can keep it all in my head when I am having a craving =)

I keep saying that I am not giving up anything, just making a small change, which I have done before. I began with switching to diet soda. That was way harder than it sounds! When you have the buttons for Diet Coke and Mt Dew and you have to choose the better one. WHEW! The first time I did that, I was soooooo proud of myself. So i am giving myself one soda a day, one bottle of lemonade (I have the Crystal Light packages that you add to water), and am pushing up to 2 bottles of water, so all in all I think that is a lot of liquid.

I chose the name Below 30 because my BMI is at 36. I do not have a specific weight goal in mind, just getting my BMI down. Once I get below 30 I will set a new goal. I would like to at least be in a size 10 and I have no idea what that weight would be.

    I am starting out at:
married female, age 31, height 5ft 2inches, weight 184, BMI 36, not much exercise

    Erick is:
young male, age 11, height 5ft 1inch, weight 171, very athletic

My first goal is to make it through the Induction not hating everyone =) and adding at least 2 days of exercise. I've been making all the excuses....there's no time, it's too cold, blah blah blah.....I HAVE to get my butt moving.

SO thanks for the read, hope I meet some encouraging friends on here, and hope my butt shrinks 4 sizes =)

    Thanks

    Re: New to Akins

    Firstly, welcome.

I am new to this too, and also hoping my butt shrinks!

You sound like you are in the right mind set and having your family doing this with you will make it easier because you can get rid of those bad carbs in your home that might be too tempting.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress, just to let you know that in the first few days you might feel quite flu-ish, I did and apparently it's normal. I feel so much better now (my 7th day).

There are lots of members here who have great advice and everyone is so supportive, it helps so much.
    Hugs always,

      Re: New to Akins

Welcome! It's so nice to have you here!

I completely understand having to start tomorrow to be in the right mindset. I am the same way.

Your goals seem VERY obtainable. I know that you will be an exercising machine in no time! LOL

Do you have a copy of the 2002 version of DANDR? (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) It is a VERY helpful and necessary tool for doing Atkins corrctly. It also has awesome recipes in the back...which could help you add variety.

The recipe forums on here are absolutely wonderful. Your family won't be missing anything. Their's a ton of recipes for snack, appetizers, main courses, side dishes, desserts, drinks...everything and anything. I love it in those forums...I think you'll like it, too!

I think the most water you can drink is okay to do until you get used to it..but I would try my absolute hardest to try to get to at least 64 oz a day. I know it seems like a lot, but TRUST me, the weight will come off so much faster. That has been the case for me. If I have about 35 oz a day, no loss...if I have 64, maybe a little something, but if I hit 100oz (which I aim for everyday), I lose. It will help you through little "stalls" in your weight loss. I HATED water before this WOE. Now, I cannot get enough.

Just some advice, please be careful with all those artifical sweeteners. They do stall some people, and I just don't want that to happen to you! You are going to be working so hard to lose weight, and I'd hate to see a glass of either diet soda or lemonade stop you. Be sure to count them toward your daily allotment when you do have them.

Good for you for changing your life and becoming a happier, healthier you. You deserve this, and YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Once again, Welcome!!! It's so nice to meet you and I cannot wait to see you around!

Hello. Welcome. It sounds like you have the right frame of mind and know what to do. Another thing that will help you stay motivated is to take your measurements every couple weeks so you can see yourself shrinking. That is one of the things that keeps me motivated.

                  Re: New to Akins

thanks for all the support again! today at lunch i passed on my salad dressing because I have the low fat version at 11 carbs per serving...yay me but i couldn't pass up a taste when cleaning up the dishes......just a small uhoh but still one......

i just can't believe how much thought i actually have to put into eating......i woke up thinking about it!

today i am taking out, throwing away, and/or giving away all the food that are carb filled in the house. I actually had quite a little row with my husband about it, but he finally gave in and saw things my way =)

                  thanks again everyone

                        Re: New to Akins

That all depends. How much of the veggies did you have as far as measurements go? Do you have your DANDR book? The foods themselves look okay, but you definitely need to stick to 3 cups of salad veggies or 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of "other" acceptable veggies on the induction food list. How did your carb count for the day turn out? Was it no more than 20? The ham, was it fresh or packaged? Just a few questions, since I couldn't tell everything from the food list.

Sounds like you had a good day though!
