  • Falling allready...:(

Hello! I keep trying to start but my willpower stinks. I did so good today(my 2nd day) and just an hour ago I mindlessly ate a banana . WHY!? So............. I'm going to start again tomorrow. Question: Is it a good idea to prepare your meals ahead of time....like for the entire week? Oh BTW, I'm 34, 5'6 and I weigh about 215 lbs. I would like to get down to at least 180, but 170 would be my ultimate goal/desire. Heck, I'd just like to get under 200!!! Do any of you have any tips for me? Is diet soda bad? Will drinking diet soda hinder my progress? Should I just drink water? What are some good snack ideas? During Introduction should I just try to avoid ANY carbs or just keep it under 20? BTW, this site is awesome!! A great source of inspiration imo!

    Re: Falling allready...

    Welcome!

First question, have you read the book? This is a must, and if you can't afford it, you can read (search) it online at Amazon.com here. Just search for the word "carbohydrate" and you will be able to read the entire book cover to cover. Once you read it, I think your willpower will be better, because you'll know WHY you need to make the choices that Atkins requires, for the sake of your health.

Old habits are hard to break! Don't beat yourself up over a banana. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get right back to it! The worst thing we can do is make more bad decisions because we made a mistake (I once took a "break" because I wanted to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal, and the next day it was easy to rationalize that I could have the leftovers since I was already off the plan anyway, and the next day... and soon it was over a year later and I was still making bad choices, all a domino effect from one day! Your body will respond to the overall trend that you have in your eating, and though you may have a slight slowdown in your ketosis, getting right back to healthy eating will offset the banana very quickly.

If you're strapped for time and on the go, making meals ahead of time can be a good idea. But every person's preferences and schedules are different. For me, I just PLAN my meals ahead of time, but cook everything fresh. I love to cook, and work from home so that's just what works for me, but find what works for you and makes life easier.

Tips? There are so many! Read the book, number one. Exercise 4-5 days per week (any exercise at all, find something you enjoy). Drink water, (and only water). Rule of thumb is half of your body weight in pounds, drink that many fl. oz. of water each day.

Yes, diet soda is not good, the caffeine in it causes insulin spikes and goes against the entire point of Atkins and why it works. Yes, it can hinder progress in many people. Also, by taking up Atkins you are striving to adopt a new and healthy way of life where you eat and drink what's healthy and to fuel your body. What better time to break old bad habits and put your sweet tooth in its coffin where it belongs? Ask yourself what value the diet soda has to your health and to your body? The answer will tell you whether you should drink it or not. Also, artificial sweeteners can possibly cause stalls in some individuals, but that's just something you have to learn about your own body and handle accordingly.

I highly recommend you join boot camp next time it rolls around, you will get individualized help, support and tough love, and learn the ins and outs of Atkins from the experts. It helped me more than I can tell you!

Snack ideas... hmmm snacks are kind of hard for me, still.
Pork rinds (if you like them)
    cheese chips
    veggies with ranch dip
    celery and cream cheese
    cherry tomatoes
    olives
    cheese slices
    sugar-free cheesecake
    "mock danish"
    "clouds"
frozen whipped cream sweetened with splenda
You can find the recipe for lots of these in the Food forum.

Just keep your NET carbs under 20, you definitely don't have to avoid all carbs. 20 is a level where just about anyone but the most metabolically resistant will easily lose weight. 20 NET carbs means your total carb count MINUS your fiber count. So you could eat 35 grams carbs, 15 grams fiber and be just fine for the day.

Another tip: use Fitday.com to track your food intake, it is invaluable. Aim for your calories to be 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs.

Here are links to the rules of induction and acceptable foods to help get you started until you read the book:

Oh, and another tip, make sure you fit in your 3 cups of veggies per day. this is a common pitfall, people think of them as "allowable", but really they are REQUIRED. 2 cups of "salad veggies" and 1 cup of "other veggies" each day. 50% or MORE of your total carbs should come from your veggies.

I think that's all for now, I hope this helps. If you need any help or have specific questions, feel free to PM me!
Female / Currently on Extended Induction (again), begun 6/2/08.

I did Extended Induction from 1/3 to 5/9 (2006) and lost 55 pounds, so I know I can do it again!

    The reason I quit...

Cola - We all fall off the wagon, alot eat way worse than a banana! Dont restart tomorrow, stay on today!!! The banana wont hinder you too much, not as much as a cookie would have. Its funny how we mindlessly put things into our mouths and not even give it a second blink isnt it?

Im bringing the wagon back around, hop back on!!
