Re: *Newbie, I am so LOST!*

    Hi Jam,

As far as the negative feedback you get just do what my kids do, let it go in one ear and right out the other and ignore the rest. YOu say you feel great on this WOE then that should be all the evidence you need, and you dad's cholesterol improved, that too is great! Keep on keeping on!

As far as going poop (PU)! What I have found is that after I eat a high fat meal, like a nice rare juicy rib eye or prime rib or have a nice oily salad with lots of olive oil or an mayonnaise based dressing I tend to go poop with in the hour! My theory is that the fat help, for a lack of a better phrase, lubricate you poop pathway and everything seems to just move and groove a lot better after eating a high fat meal. Again this is just my experience and I am not sure if anyone else has noticed this.

BRB I have to poop! Ok I am back!!!

I also have another theory as well. I try to keep my food consumption to the same proportions to my body make up! What I mean by this is that my body is made up of mostly water, so therefore I consume more water than anything else. Then my body is made up of protein so logically I consume that second most, and then fat, and finally carbs. Like I said it is just a theory and it seems to fit into the Atkins way of eating and lifestyle and so far so good for me and I poop every day 2-3 times. You could say I am a champion pooper I do eat lots of fiber as well though, I am careful when choosing my carb intake to make sure there is plenty of fiber!

Hope you get things flushed out and good luck we know you can do it!!!

Oh and keep reading the book! I have a couple of copies, I keep one at the office, one in the car, and one at home with me! I was thinkng of getting a version for my laptop as well

Biscuit- Thanks very much for the kind words... I have been getting them a lot lately from people I haven't seen in awhile... boy does it feel good!

Jam- From my experiences with my mother, i've come to disregard any advice I get or what I read in various places. Everyone of them has hugely different views on things... dietary doesn't seem to be that exact of a science. I mean, come on, haha, if my own mother knew what she was doing she wouldn't weigh what shes does, eat what she eats, and need a form of bariatric surgery to aid her in the effortless quest she calls weight loss. Sorry if I seem bitter, but man, you guys just don't know the half of it!

Re: *Newbie, I am so LOST!*

              Hi, and welcome!

I love hearing your positive experiences about how much the diet has changed how you feel. That was my experience as well, I couldn't believe how easily I slept, how great I felt when I woke up, how much ENERGY I had. Welcome to a new life, isn't it great?

I just want to chime in a bit on the poop issue. I'm not comfortable with the notion it might be OK not to poop, chalking it up to your body burning and using the food you eat. I certainly don't think a majority of our poop when we're OFF Atkins is made up of the SUGAR we eat, do you? I think to some extent the increased efficiency is true, but not to the point that you would go a long time without pooping at all. If you don't go at least ever 2-3 days I think there's definitely a problem that needs to be fixed, and I would bet your body would be telling you the same thing with bloating and pain after a few days. It's true that your body will be more efficient on this way of eating, but there will still be waste that you need to eliminate. If you aren't pooping, the most likely culprit (especially during induction) is too little fiber in the diet. You need to up your fiber intake, either with fiber supplements (psyllium husk caplets or some other induction friendly supplements) or by including psyllium husks or ground flax seeds into your diet. Another thing might be too little water. You need to be sufficiently hydrated for things to keep moving properly. Exercise also helps things keep moving along. I'm truly not sure what the flax seed OIL would do for contipation since it doesn't have the fiber that flax seeds themselves have, but maybe someone else could explain. The flax seed oil is healthy and nutritious and contains some essential omega oils that you can't get from many other sources, so it's definitely good for you, just not sure it's helpful for poop issues.

You know what, regarding the people who are telling you that this diet is unhealthy, I say educate yourself. Know the ins and outs of the diet. Know the medicine and science behind it. Quote the studies that prove they're wrong. If you know what you're talking about, how can they question you? They can't. You should want to know the depths of the diet you've chosen to follow anyway, for your own peace of mind and knowing that you're doing the right thing.

Along those lines, I'm concerned by what you said here:
i just got a "readers digest" talk about the diet... and then a pat on the back and ... ok ready-set-go!
Is this yourself you're talking about? Does this mean you haven't read the book? I know this may sound like some sort of mantra around here, but you HAVE to read the book. If you haven't, how can you know you're doing it right? If you haven't read it, buy a copy and read it ASAP. If you can't afford it, read it online at amazon.com, you can do a search for the word "carbohydrate" here, and then all the pages will be there for you to read from beginning to end. Here's the link: LINK

Once you read the book I think most of your questions will be answered and you'll feel a lot stronger about the choice you've made, and a LOT less concerned about the nay-sayers who are talking out of complete ignorance. I don't think letting that roll off your back is the answer I'd give, but that's just me. If people are wrong, I have to tell them they're wrong, and WHY they're wrong. I think health and nutrition is far too important a topic to just keep quiet and hope they stop bothering you. But then again I'm just that kind of personality, and know that's not for everyone.

Good luck, I hope this way of life continues to work for you, and that you are more grounded once you read the book. Please keep us updated.

Re: *Newbie, I am so LOST!*

The next time your friends try to dis you on Atkins, ask them if they realize they are misinformed. It's a LOW carb, not an "all meats and fats" way of life.

Maybe ask them to tell you what they know about the diet. Then correct them with the facts. This helps especially if you've read DANDR, where Dr. Atkins counters many of the myths about the diet. This is how you back yourself up.

And the part about Dr. Atkins dying from his own diet...that is a maliciously spread rumor. He died of a head injury, and the rapid weight gain was a complication from the coma he was in.

Re: *Newbie, I am so LOST!*

                  Hi,

I know where you're coming from my friend. Two years ago I started the Atkins Diet, I lost almost 40 pounds, my chol dropped, my Triglcy dropped I felt better.

Then, I started listening to my relatives. Ohhh Scooter it's so bad. I've heard you could die......please don't do Atkins. Then the nutritionist who lives across the street came over to my house. She said, you are doing this all wrong.

The Atkins way is all wrong. You deprive yourself so much.....

Okay, I listened to everybody. Got rid of all my Atkins stuff, packed away the books and ate low fat. For a week. Then I thought I'd add in Pretzels, no fat, way to go, bag a day or two, then it just rolled on. As of two weeks ago I was the heaviest I have ever been in my life. 295 pounds. It made me breath hard just to tie my shoes. I ate my last carb infested meal on Easter.

I have now lost 12 pounds. Already I feel much better. You can't tell me, that this "diet", "plan", (I call it "change of life" ) is terrible. It works for me. I'm a carnivour , I love meat. I plan on trying new kinds of foods I've never tried before. So what, goodbye pizza, goodbye bread, I would rather be here 40 years from now and see my son, my grandchildren, etc grow up, than be dead in a year from a heart attack.

Sorry....I'll get down off the soapbox......shame on your friends, they shoud all support you, I will not listen to the critic either...my promise this time around...

That is EXACTLY what I get from this diet! ... I LOVE it! And somewhat I don't concider it a diet anymore, I think I just like to say I am. *What I mean is that being on the diet tought me how to eat right. I noticed alot of things about the Atkins Diet is more like common sense. After each phase you're basically eating EVERYTHING that is *healthy* and well. You're eating basically the food pyramid and you feel GREAT! After you get down to your desired weight, I think alot of people notice they've actually LEARNED and TOUGHT themselfs how to eat. NO MORE DRUGS! (sugars, fast food ) <-thats what I call em'!

About those haters' --> I've noticed alot of them either:

                    a. are OVERWEIGHT!
                    b. are UNDERWEIGHT!
                    c. have their nose up their and like to think they're rocket scientists.
                    d. like to bring down people just to bring themselves UP...
OR E. THEY DONT EVEN KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE ATKINS DIET!!!!!

(hehe) so i guess they dont really bother me anymore.

                    NO MORE DRUGS! (hehe)

JAM350, It might be a good idea to read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. You will have all the ammo you need to shut these negative people up. Also, there are many instructions in the book for issues like constipation. This is a serious life commitment that we make each day and most of us need all the info and support we can get so why not start out with getting the instructions directly from the source.

Hey that little scale you can get at tickerfactory.com and get a weight loss ticker. It is free. You can pick your own pictures and then you put your weight in and your goal and it gives you a code to copy and paste to your signature. They give you a bunch of codes for different things but i used the "bbcode" and that one worked for me. You can make a signature in the User CP area on this site. The link for it is above in the double blue lines.

About the stalling, i stalled for almost 4 weeks after my initial 8 lbs loss. Then after the third for fourth week, i lost another 3 or 4 pounds, now they are slowly melting away. I am not losing that fast, but i have lost about 15 lbs in almost 2 months. which is better than if i weren't on this diet. If you have anymore questions about the tickers and signature, let me know.
