  • Hello!

    Howdy folks,

Thanks for having me as part of this group. A quick introduction:

I started induction on the 30th. So, I'm just starting day 6. Drained off a lot of water weight over the first few days, so I'm down 13 pounds at this point, which is great, but I know I'm not going to lose more than 2 pounds a day over the long haul, so I'm happy to have lost it, but realistic about the road ahead.

I had a hard time getting my membership verified here (either it didn't like my email address, or my email servers didn't like these email servers... I just couldn't get the confirmation email)... so I've been participating at another forum for a while. They've been very helpful, and are wonderful people, but the membership is pretty small, and I've been anxiously anticipating being able to become a member here.

While I've been dealing with the membership issue, I have managed to read a lot of the information here. GREAT STUFF! I think I actually found this place when I did a search on a specific question I had that was answered here in one of the numerous FAQs. I've learned a lot, on top of what I've already learned reading the book (DANDR - 2002).

I've been keeping very close track of everything that I've been eating over the past 5 days, and have been pretty much smack dab on the 20 net carb mark, with most of that coming from veggies. I'm lucky in that I've always been the cook and the shopper in our family, so I have control over that. I'm also fortunate in that I'm a fairly good cook, and definitely an innovative one, who likes to try mixing and matching. So, I've had a lot of variety, and enjoyed the process of both creating meals, cooking them, and certainly eating them.

I've also had a lot of experience with addiction, having participated in a quit smoking support forum for a number of years (beginning with my own quit). That experience has been invaluable in this pursuit for several reasons that I'll save for another post.

I look forward to participating here, and to having a group of people I can turn to that are more experienced at this than me, and on whom I can rely to point me in the right direction when I need it.

    Happy New Year!

        Hi there,

Welcome to ADBB - you're right, this is such a great and useful site. I'm not sure I'd have got this far without it and I definately wouldn't have done as much exercise. It's worth checking out the challenges to see if anything tickles your fancy.

              Re: Hello!

Thanks for all the quick replies, guys! Just wanted to add a couple things:

-My start weight was 279. Heaviest I've ever been, although I haven't gained much in the last 4 years. I was 272 in 2001, and have avoided scales like a vampire avoids wooden stakes since then. I've been a pretty serious exerciser over that time (play a lot of tennis), and that's what's kept me from ballooning up. I guess I always thought that the exercise would be enough to lose weight, but I only ever lost a little, and only when I was going all out, every week for several weeks (a pace I couldn't realistically keep up over the long haul). I finally came to the understanding that, after 5 years of trying, I wasn't getting anywhere, and was starting to lose ground. This became particularly apparent as soon as an injury prevented me from working out as often. I came to understand that I needed to look at this from another perspective.

-This is my first diet ever. As I say, I've always believed that exercise was my only way out. I know without trying that I could never last on a diet that left me hungry. My mom's tried to sell me on Atkins for several years, but I wasn't listening. Having waited 38 years to go on my first diet, I've undertaken this with the utmost seriousness. It took a lot of soul searching to get to this point. I'm starting this process with full commitment.

-I am drinking one cup of black tea per day. Reading what Atkins says, what's been said here, and taking advice from others (at another board), I determined that my 2 cups of tea per day were not the major contributing factor to my problems. I knew I'd have no problem cutting back to one, and I was fine cutting out the milk. I've never been a huge caffeine drinker, but that one cup in the morning was something that, if I didn't absolutely have to give it up, I figured I'd hold onto for a while. The total amount of caffeine in that cup falls well below what has been written to be a potential issue. I may reevaluate this at a later stage, as I get further along.

              Cheers,

              OBob

Welcome! Sounds like you are doing an AMAZING job!! Congratulations!

Have you tried heavy cream in your tea? It is also great instead of milk when you make scrambled eggs!

You may also want to check out an exercise challenge! This is my new thing - just started Jan 1, but I am loving it! I already feel better - well, except the part about every muscle aching - but that is a GOOD thing!! LOL!

Can't wait to see your progress pics!

Thanks for the welcomes! Feels great to know that there's so many people who have already been doing this for so long, and people who are just starting out like me. I spent some time perusing the before-and-after pictures, and WOW! Incredibly motivating.

Had my first meal out tonight. I took it easy, and just had sashimi, as I wasn't sure about the other items on the menu, and didn't really want to be a pest about it. I'll probably be more assertive about it in the future. Tonight, I was just happy to go to a restaurant, and come out of it without struggling.
