  • Good afternoon ladies and gents

I have been browsing around this board for a couple of days just seeing what's up. You guys are so inspiring it's almost scary.

So here's the deal. I tried Atkins a few years ago kinda half-heartedly and when it didn't work for me I didn't worry too much about it. It just seemed like so much work. All that figuring out what to eat, when to eat it. Going online to try to find those low carb substitutes for stuff like bread and pasta. They tasted nasty and I never lost anything. Then life got in the way, so, yeah, whatever.

Fast forward to a few days ago..I found you guys. And it dawned on me . I was making it hard on myself. This is sooooooo easy. I realized that I don't really like carbs that much anyway. I use them to put my favorite foods between, to coat my favorite foods before frying and to hold my favorite foods for ease of eating. I never was much for cakes or cookies (ok, maybe the occassional thin mint, but come on, they rock!). I don't need to find a substitute for things I never really cared about to begin with. I am a HUGE fan of BLTs, turkey subs, chicken wings and FRIED anything. Grease is my downfall. So why not turn it to my advantage. I can fry almost ANYTHING and it's safe (and yes, I use olive oil). Chicken, turkey, more chicken, veggies, more chicken. I understand the value of moderation, and I am a fitday person. I've been keeping my calories to around 1500 a day and 65/30/5 (f/p/c), or at least pretty close.

I figure this time I'll do it right. Luckily I'm a water fanatic. I drink GALLONS of water. Ever since my son got sick a coupla years ago (Leukemia, in remission now, thanks for asking), I realized that water makes the world go round (I wish he would understand that). And I also love veggies and have a basement full of exercise equipment. My current fave is the treadmill, but with the weather getting warmer, I may actually buy a real outside bike that moves when you pedal (oooo!!).

So I want to thank all of you for the inspiration. Today is day 3 for me and I'm down almost two pounds. Scooter, you always have something nice to say. Also Joy, Jess (my younger son is named Jesse), and sillygirl (and MANY others) are appreciated by us "newbies". If I would have found you guys a few years ago, I could be 30 pounds lighter by now.

So, yeah, like that's my story,
Heidi (seems to be a popular name on this bb)

PS - The one carby food I'm going to miss-Roy Rogers Fish sandwiches. Every year during lent I would go to Roy's and get at least one every week. I took my older son to Roys last night and he told me to "go ahead, you know how much you love them." But no, I was good. He, being the skinny chemo child he is, can eat EVERYTHING and nothing shows on the scale .

Heidi, wow, you are definitely on a track to wellness! You've got the tough stuff figured out already. What are you planning for exercise? There are some great exercise challenges on the board and they really help a person to stay motivated and accountable!

I look forward to reading about your successes!

Ah, exercise....this is where I fall a little short. Like I said, my current fave is the treadmill. I walk two miles or so a few times a week. Not near enough. It's just so darn BORING!! I have my TIVO, but TV is not one of my favorite things either. I think I need to find an activity that I can see some results from. Once the weather breaks I'll be working in the yard quite a bit. My kids aren't into any sports so they're no help. My BF plays softball. I USED to play baseball but lately...nothing. I think I'll check out the challenge section and see if there's something there to light a fire under my butt.....

Heidi!!! Congratulations on saying NO to that sandwich!!! You rock!!! it sounds like you've finally got the determination that it takes to live this way. Trust me you'll still be able to have your chicken wings, etc, you mentioned BLT, I just had a BLT myself....Bacon Lettuce Tomato Salad.....It's made the exact way but just no bread, a Tablespoon & 1/2 of mayo, mixed tossed together...BINGO!! Just that easy.

Also....THANK YOU so much for your compliment. Believe me it is very easy to come up with nice things to say at this board. Nobody ever accuses anyone of saying the same things over and over, on the contrary...we love to do that!!

Keep using that Fitday girl!! It's worth it's weight in gold to me.....the extra time each day (what's that 5 - 10 minutes???) has saved me from making some big mistakes. Julirama advised me to try and enter my counts prior to eating or cooking to be able to monitor even better, and so far that has been working out great for me.

I love it that you are a water drinker!! You're gonna need to continue to do that! Good for you! Anyway, it is so nice to meet you, I'm sure we'll talk many times over many different subjects, please don't be a stranger, I enjoyed your style of writing...very personnable (sp...did I make that word up?!?!?!) anyway.....FOCUS SCOOTER!!....

anyway....oh yes, I'm so happy to hear that your sons Leukemia is in remission, I wish the absolute best for you!!

Thank you for coming to the board and introducing yourself, we are very happy to have you here with us!! Keep turning down those Fish sandwiches...but have lots of happy BLT salad's....

          Scooter

Re: Good afternoon ladies and gents

Julie, Lyssie, and Scooter, Thanks for the replies. I am SO making a BLT salad tomorrow for dinner. I went shopping today and read every label. I got some bacon and mayo. Along with lettuce and tomato, I am going to have a killer feast. You guys are awesome.

I agree with the fitday stuff. I try to log before I eat so I know what the damage is before it actually happens. I can't tell you how many times I was, like, whoa.....I DON"T THINK SO!!!.. Then there are those times when I was saying "oops, that wasn't such a good idea." You learn, right?

I should be exercising right now but man I don't feel like it. My BF works out religiously and makes me feel totally guilty. He's got a few pounds to lose as well, but we're complete opposites. He eats crap and works out every day. I eat good and work out whenever I "darn" well feel like it. A match made in heaven? More like a match made in the munchie aisle at safeway.

Thanks again all...keep on gettin' it.....

                      LOL

Hi Heidi, thank you for the compliments and welcome to ADBB. It sounds to me like Atkins is the *perfect* plan for you. As for breading, if you immediately go into the Ongoing Weight Loss phase after your first two weeks and get up to the nut rung, you can bread things to fry in ground up almonds and some parmesan cheese. Oh, it's delish.

As for exercise....let me tell you...when I started last year I LOATHED exercise. I mean LOATHED it. I was a real couch potato. A girl named Sarah (iyamamaschke) inspired me to pick up some weights though and while I was faithful for 6 weeks of it and I liked the results I got, the inner couch potato won out alot of times. After I quit smoking in July and the metabolism slowed wayyyy down and I started eating more (from quitting and having cravings) I was gaining weight. So, I took up running and have recently returned to my weight lifting. I actually get ticked off now if someone/thing interferes with my exercise. I can say I like it more now...but what I really really really like is what it does for my body and for the endorphin highs I traded one addiction for another...and finally for a healthy one, I guess LOL

But anyway, my point is do whatever it takes to get MOVING. Find something you like. Or at least find something you can TOLERATE, and do it. I liked lifting because I felt like I got the most fat burning power for the least amount of effort (did I say that I was lazy?? Well, I am.) ha ha!

Glad to have you here and looking forward to getting to know you!

Hey, thanks for noticing! Yeah, I am pretty pumped about losing 7 pounds in 14 days. I lost 5 pounds the first week and I almost didn't weigh last Sunday because TOM made a visit on Saturday and it always affects my weight. But I bit the bullet and got on the scale and had lost 2 pounds anyway, making a loss of 7 for the 2 week induction. I'm acutally looking forward to weighing day after tomorrow to get my 3 week total because TOM is about on his last day and I am in a size smaller jeans than last week. I used to weigh everyday, but it made me play head games with myself.

Cool! I will be 47 in a few weeks and I have a son who just turned 11 (and I'm MUCH too OLD to have a kid that age...LOL), and I have two very awesome dogs and a kick-butt husband who I love dearly (even though he got on the scale last night and was dismayed that he had fallen under 140 pounds... he has trouble keeping weight on).

Thanks so much for the background... I really enjoy you. Also, I just know that you're going to do great.

                            See you around!
