  • Another newbie, looking for help and encouragement!

    Hi,
My name is Jana, I'm 50 and weigh 200lbs. I'd like to drop 40-50, like by tomorrow!
Let me be honest and tell you that I've not read the book, not gonna read the book, don't even have the book!
I lost 21lbs the beginning of last year and have put 11 back on. Last year I did it by low cal dieting. Now I've decided to try low carbing.
I am trying to do the induction based on what I've read here about the allowed foods... Started yesterday, before reading here, and ended up, according to Spark People, with an intake of 38 grams of carbs

My downfall was an ounce of nuts and, apparently, green pepper which I thought was on the generously allowed food list! No?

Anyway, here I am day 2 - Can't cut out the caffiene completely. I have 2 cups of coffee a day with nutrasweet and powdered creamer. I also drink 2-3 diet cokes per day... Am I doomed?

Today I've had 3 deviled eggs (6 halves) made with full strength mayo and a dab of mustard.
For a snack I'm going to have...??
For dinner I'm making a big chef's salad with ham, cheese, chicken, egg, lettuce, cucumber and bleu cheese dressing (has 2 gm per TBS)

I'd love a desert! Are the ricotta cheese deserts allowed during induction?

Bottom line - I need help getting thru this induction without blowing it. Breakfast is hard for me as I don't have time to cook in the AM. Yesterday I took hard boiled eggs to work but everybody who came into my office asked me if I'd crapped in my wastebasket Am I safe to get a fast food b'fast sandwich and ditch the bread?

Any and all help and suggestions are welcome...Except read the book That's what I have you guys for, right? :

    Hi Jana,

    Welcome to ADBB

I congratulate your honesty on the book, BUT I would say if that is your plan read the stickies and the FAQ section VERY thoroughly, otherwise you will be at a disadvantage as to what's expected on induction. Also if you don't read the book you won't necessarily see why things like diet coke, etc are to be avoided - I know it's a pain but knowing the science behind something makes it much easier to follow, because you know why it counts. I know that if I hadn't I would have thought 'caffiene? who cares' but it does matter - so try and cut out the diet cokes.

Your menu looks ok but make sure you have the requisite amount of veggies, not just salad. Check ham and all meats for fillers and sugars.

I think the creamer and coffee could cause issues. Not sure about nutrasweet.

Welcome Janahart! Glad you found us here at ADBB.

Your post made me laugh: "That's what I have you guys for, right?" in particular! Well... I wish it were so easy!

You can certainly get a wealth of info from reading the stickies and getting advice about Atkins from other members, but I can't honestly say that all of that replaces the book. Dr Atkins explains everything in great depth and very well... understanding the science behind this way of is fundamental to success.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I'd really recommend you getting hold of a copy. Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 edition) is the one the board goes by and is the last one written by Dr A entirely, before his death.

Meantime... you can check out the FAQ section and the induction forum. The idea is to keep within 20 g carbs per day for the first 14 days at least. You should eat only what is on the induction acceptable food list. Nothing else. Most of your 20g carbs should come from veggies... the rest from eggs, cheese etc. Sticking to unprocessed foods is very important.

Drink masses of water, exercise and take a supplement (without iron).

Well... those are my suggestions... pls do think twice though before deciding not to read the book.

Keep us posted as to how you're getting along. We're behind you all the way!

OK, OK, I'll get the book, read the stickies anyway, which I've been doing.
So, what's the deal on peppers and why did it come up with 9 grams of carbs on my Sparkpeople? Also, mayonnaise... Jar says 0 carbs. I logged in in Spark people and it had like 11 carbs for 3 TBS... I don't get it!
I'll pick up some caffiene free diet coke and actually, today I had heavy cream in my coffee to avoid the carbs in the creamer... Forgot that.

I don't know about Sparkpeople (I use fitday) but it could be that your specific product is different from the generic ones they use the values for.

Also with veggies, fruit, nuts and legumes the fibre needs to be taken away for the true carb value on Atkins.

Also, sorry to be bearer of bad news but aspartame (in caffiene free diet coke) can also cause weight loss stalls I believe and it is seen a nasty substance generally. If you go cold turkey on it you'd be amazed about how little you miss it.

Best of luck and glad you decided to get the book

I've used fitday too... They also show carbs for mayo but not as many. Spark people has a much more comprehensive food list, I've found.

Hey Jana! I agree, I'm sorry to say, you need to get the book! Nuts and ricotta aren't allowed on induction, as you already know! The stickies are awesome, the forums are great for learning, but really, it's the book that will help you understand all this. Mayo does have carbs in it, but not much!

Hello there. Well done on choosing Atkins - and a BIG WELCOME to you. Can I just say that the book is fab. I know it looks a bit daunting - 'cos it's quite thick. Stick it in your loo and turn it into loo reading!!!! What's so great about the book is not just that it really explains the whole way of eating. It is also really encouraging - so many great stories of people who have succeeded. It's really motivating. Plus it gives you your "can eat" list which is so easy to follow. All the best to you and lotsa luv.
