  • New To Atkins, slightly apprehensive and in need of chat friends for support

    Good Morning all!

I've read quite a few posts all over the ADBB and I must say, I am grateful that many of you activley post and support one another. I have never tried Aktins before, nor have I ever committed to any other "diet" plan, but after being chunky my whole life and realizing about 4 months ago that I have allowed myself to become heavier than I've ever been, I'm ready to change.

But being ready to change hasn't dispelled the fear and apprehension I'm feeling. I've prayed and obessed over this for the past two days and yet I'm still scared. I know I have a horribly dysfunctional relationship with food and that I've mistreated my body since the day I was old enough to decide what to put in my mouth, but yet I'm afraid to make a commitment to trying something different.

As I sit here and write I see how silly this must sound. The rational part of me can evaluate these feeling and see them as absurd, but can't seem to make them go away.

If any of you would be willing to help me stay focused, accountable to my daily eating habits, offer advice and just general support I'd be most appreciative.

    Thanks,
    lost_in

Hi Lost and welcome to ADBB!

I think you'll find that most of the members here have also suffered a love/hate or obsessive relationship with food, so there's no need to feel alone! We're all here for a reason and that is to become healthy through Atkins. There's no need to feel silly, you're in good company!

For advice on your menus, there is a forum where you can post them for member's critique. For any problem you may encounter, there is a forum for it! There is even a place for you to post a journal!

Trust me, the satisfaction you'll get from doing a clean induction will far outweigh any doubts or fears you might be having. I'm a newbie to this too, but I'm on day 10 and feel fantastic!

There's plenty of people here who will support you and guide you, and if you make a mistake, or you're having a bad day and cheat, it doesn't matter as long as you learn something from the experience, and start again with renewed strength and determination. You'll be fine!

Some tips that have helped me out:

        1. If possible clear out all the forbidden food from your cupboards/fridge/freezer - give them away, have a big carb party before you start induction, etc.

        2. Plan your meals meticulously, then buy everything you need. That way you'll always know on any given day exactly what you're gonna be eating and drinking for breakfast/lunch/dinner/snacks.

        3. Go to http://www.fitday.com and sign up there. Update it on a daily basis with whatever you've eaten and whatever exercise you've done. Keeping track of your carbs will keep you on the straight and narrow! Put a link to your page in your signature so we can all see it!

        4. Start keeping a blog/journal. I've never been big on this but I've found that having an online account of my daily progress is really helpful and motivational. Not only am I able to see how far I've come, but I'm now accountable to the entire population of the Internet! http://www.blogspot.com

        5. Exercise! It doesn't matter what, but get your heart pumping for 30 mins every day. It'll make you feel good about yourself, help shift the weight, beat depression and hep you deal with cravings.

        6. Ask for help when you need it. Post here as often as you feel you need to for support or advice, they're all really friendly!

Anyway, sorry that was a little bit wordy but I hope it helps! Good luck!

Hello and welcome aboard! Glad you found us here... ADBB is a wonderful place for support, good advice and inspiration.

Garwil gave you some very good tips, so I'll just add that, if you haven't already, it would be a huge help to read the book. Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - 2002 edition is the one you want. Understanding the hows and whys of the Atkins way of eating is fundamental to success.

Ditto to what Sally and Garwil said. Fitday is so easy to use and it only takes a few minutes each day. I personally don't enjoy tracking every morsel I eat, it makes me feel guilty. However fitday will track everything for you and its so easy to keep track of your carbs....I don't feel guilty doing it.

Reading the book is a must, even if its an online version of it, or borrow it from your local library if need be.

Good luck and keep us posted....if you keep us in the loop we can keep you in the loop and support eachother!!!

Thanks for the welcome! I have taken the first steps to induction, and although I had my usual coffee with coffeemate lite and sugar and haven't yet figured out how I'm going to adjust that to meet to rules of induction, I've also eaten one hard boiled egg and one chix breast for lunch -- two things I never would have eaten before.

BTW: how do I get one of the ticker tapes for my profile? And does anyone use the chat function on this site?

              Thanks!

Sounds like you had a good lunch.

I find for me the hardest thing is trying to give up coffee...I have yet to successfully nix it altogether. I live off of caffiene at times, I work full time, I'm in school full time and I have 4 kids. So my life is crazy!

                To get a ticker :

                Hope this helps!

                  Lancelotsgirl,

Thanks for the ticker instructions! Has making the adjustment to this WOE been difficult for you so far? What kinds of foods did you eat in the past? What kinds of foods are you eating now? I know you're still kinda new to this and I'm curious about your experience thus far.

                  Thanks!

Re: New To Atkins, slightly apprehensive and in need of chat friends for support

                    Hey-
It has been difficult at the same that it has not. The reason I say this is because for me we've been going through a few stressful things around my house (trying to move, me working 60+ hrs a week, registering my kids for school etc....).

It's not difficult to do this WOL, the way I think about it is "It is just food" that's it, very simple, it is nutrition that our bodies NEED! No more, no less.

With that mind set I haven't had too many problems (fell of the wagon a few times over the last month due to the above mentioned things), but you have to commit to it. Change everything about the way you approach food and the things that approach you (watch what you eat).

The first 2 to 4 days are h***! Really they are because you are going through sugar withdrawls and you body is switching into ketosis, which you want it to do, but it is tough to get through. On the other hand once you surpass those first few days (that you're going through) you'll find that you're not that hungry, you need to remind yourself to eat.

Another thing, drink your water, lots of it. The water is one of the main ways for our bodies to rid all of the "adipose" waste (fat). When our bodies burn the fat, it gets flushed out with the liquids we drink, more water = faster weight loss.

I used to eat McD's, Taco Bell for lunch sometimes, the Lean Cuisines, french fries, 10 cookies at a time, a huge bowl of ice cream, snack on cheese and lunch meats....bread, yummmy bread. I miss that the most sometimes, but I'm getting over it.

In the mornings I eat 2 eggs scrambles with cheese and things like ham or turkey and some sour cream on top. A hamburger with cheese, some broccoli....tuna fish and mayonaise w/pepper...whatever you have.
Lunch is usually salad and hard boiled eggs, for dinner some sort of chicken/beef/fish and some veggies and another salad.

The recipe forum on here is amazing, I love the spinach lasagna recipe that Oh2bfit has put up. It is by far the best recipe I have found.

Have some variations on hand and you won't get bored. PM me if you want more info on foods, or we can post it in the "food" forums.

                    Ttyl, take care!

I went food shopping today but need to pick up a few things tomorrow from Publix.. I'd love to be your weight buddy. I'm doing this to shed a few pounds and try to kick my smoking and caffeing/sugar habit. I also need a few friends to help me along. So drop me a line if you want to share.

                              Hey all,

Lgirl! Thanks for checking in with me. It really made me feel awesome to know somebody cares about how this is working for me!

Friday was great! Ate good, ran and felt awesome! Saturday was another story however. Everything started out just peachy but when my b/f returned home from being out of town and found out what I was up to he was a little less than supportive. He's been a weightlifter all his life and blessed with not only huge muscles and a body to die for but also the ability drop weight by simply telling his body to do it. Its uncanny really, he'll wake up in the morning, look at his tummy, tell his body to drop 5lbs and POOF! away it goes.

When he and I met a little over a year ago, I was about 160lbs and was feeling pretty good, but he and I both love expensive food and rarely skip dessert. Before I knew it I was 200lbs. A good 15lbs heavier than I'd ever been. I haven't felt good about myself in about 5 months and just last Friday decided I was going to change my body. Low and behold it took some discussing and a goodbye carbs piece of homemade cornbread (he makes the best Tennesee cornbread ever!) and a few bites of a hot fudge sunday to get him on board with my decision to stop giving in to foods that make me feel icky about myself.

This morning we discussed my decision a bit more and he says he'll help me as long as I'm cautious about how my body responds and tell him if I start feeling weak or ill. He even made me a very yummy steak tonight for dinner which I thought was very sweet of him.

So all in all, I'm excited and ready to be about half the woman I am today I'm aiming for 150lbs even though i know that's still chunky for my frame, if I reach it I'll be the lowest weight I've been since freshman year in Highschool; as scary that is.

So one day at a time, tomorrow I have to get up and make this WOE a part of me again. Slowly I know I'll get bette at it. I'm just slow to make new habits.

                              TTYL,
