  • Hi Guys! New to you!

    Hey there!
I'm a 21 year old Australian who has been on the Atkins Diet for a year now. Although i'm on OWL..... i dont really eat more than 25 carbs a day (some days up to 35??? but not often).

Over the past few months i've started to put on weight - about 4kg in total... which is 8.81849 lb according to an online converter I contribute this to my love of almonds and coffee

I'm embarking on a holiday to Japan with my boyfriend in October and have decided to go back onto induction to lose the 4kg before i leave(because i KNOW i'll be eating over my carb intake on my holiday).

I'm worried it will be hard for me, because my body hasn't really fallen out of a ketosis like state....so it will be hard to lose! Anyway, this forum is GREAT and I look forward to picking your brains on my journey

    Love Dot

          Hi Dot,
what was your SW? what is your CW? Did you find your ACE? Is it really possible that you stay so low on carbs (around 25) and gain weight? I would like my ACE to be high-er!
Are you doing DANDR? I have so many questions...sorry if I bother you

Re: Hi Guys! New to you!

Hey! Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone!!

Loo-see: When i started on Atkins i did not have a bad weight issue, I was instructed to go on it due to having PSOC. The weight loss was just a bonus, that i ended up loving (i have so much more confidence!) and was/is the motivating factor to keep me on the diet (that i need to be on!). My starting weight was 64 kilos...which is 140.8 pounds. With Atkins and exercise I was down to 50kg (110 pounds) in no time.

In the past 4 or 5 months I have steadily increased up to 120 pounds (which i'm not THAT unhappy with).

The reason i started gaining weight on that many carbs was because I cut down significantly on my fat intake. After 6 months with a high fat diet I started to feel a little...like I needed a detox, and being someone who didn't eat alot of fat, i started to cut down. In the last months i've been having no breakfast, a salad for lunch with some tofu or chicken and a piece of meat and 1-2 cups of vegies at night. Although my diet was quite healthy, it was lacking in the high fat factor needed to get the Atkins diet kicking. Hope that explains it?

Re: Hi Guys! New to you!

Hi Dot! Welcome to the board. Great job you've done eating this way for a year! Do you think you need to go all the way back to induction? Why not just up the daily fat and see if that helps, but keep your carbs where they're at?

Additionally, if you read around the board some, you will see that many people kind of get stuck in the lower carb range. Once they start bumping the carbs up a little, they start losing weight again.

Keep us posted as to what worked for you!

                  Thanks for answering my questions.
                  I understand it completely now.
I hope that you will, during Induction, lose those few kg you gained.
                  Good luck!

Sillygirl: how will bumping up the carbs help me lose weight? I've been on this for over a year and definately find that weeks where i indulge in a few more carbs (all good ones..) I pack on the weight.... So, how does that work exactly?

                      Sorry! i'm confused!

                      You guys are all great

Re: Hi Guys! New to you!

Well sometimes we get stuck at a certain level. We are supposed to find our CCL, our critical carb level for losing. That's the number where we stop losing. Typically, the average person can consume around 50+ and still be losing weight. Some people around here eat 60-80 and still lose weight.

Your being at 25 grams for a year is what we would call extended induction. Usually for extremely heavy people. Dr. Atkins wants us to be on induction for two weeks and then bump up all the food rungs so that we're eating from every food group. Your body may be used to it's current 25 grams of carbs. Have you been following this program properly, eating veggies every day

You can go read around the Ongoing Weight Loss forum to find more information. Better yet, buy the book. It's the best tool to have while eating this way. Keep in mind, our bodies do need carbohydrates. Too little isn't such a great thing.

Re: Hi Guys! New to you!

Hmm... i understand that.... but i dont see how my body will start losing more if I eat more carbs.... But i might try it. My plan is to start exercising more and sticking with my diet and then slowly adding a bit more as I become happier with my progress.

Yes, i've been following the progam properly, eating veggies every day I'm a pretty healthy person - I never ate junk food before I went on Atkins. I eat organic meats and raw and steamed vegetables for dinner, with eggs for breakfast and a leafy salad and tuna for lunch. I just need to up the fat for now i think!

its almost imposible to get his book in Aus, however I have his DVD and have read his book (around 6 months ago).

I'm trying to get my hands on another copy.

because i have never eaten much bad foods and have been on low carb for so long, i find i gain weight as soon as I eat ANYTHING
