Hi! I have never posted on a bulletin board, so I hope I am doing this correctly. Where do you put your tickers and weight information? Does it go in the signature?
I am 57 years old, female, happily married and happily retired! After reading this website for awhile, I have finally got up the nerve to make a post. The hardest part is putting down a weight, it’s no longer private. I never tell anyone how much I weigh. I hate people to know my weight, fat or thin; however, I admire all of you for your posts, so I am going to do it!
Here’s my story, I hope it’s not too long, but I think it is important for me (and hopefully others) to write (or read). I have been off and on diets the majority of my life. I went on my first diet in junior high school. Over the years, I have been successful sometimes, but only at losing, not at keeping it off for long. The older I have got, the more I have needed to lose. You name it, I have tried it.
In January 2004, I talked my husband (who has less of a weight problem, but had gained some in recent years) into trying Atkins with me. Atkins was starting to become popular again and a friend had said they might try it. Why not? Little did I know, this would become the best thing we did for ourselves.
We started January 11, 2004. I was down 9 ½ lbs in two weeks and 15 lbs. in a month. By April I was down 40 lbs. We were determined by now and never cheated. We felt good and did not crave carbs at all. If we went to a party or a get-together, we brought low-carb snacks such as cheese or shrimp. We both encouraged each other. Other people gave us a bad time, but we hung in there. I took an early retirement in September 2004 and was down 80 lbs. I wore a dress to my retirement party and felt great. I hadn’t had a dress on for years. My husband had gone down two pants sizes and felt great. By now, people are asking us for a copy of the Atkins diet rather than making fun of us. After one year of doing Atkins, I had lost 88 lbs. It was getting much harder now to lose any weight. In May 2005 I was down 97 pounds. We went to the San Juan Islands with friends in our boats. I can still picture myself in a snug, short white cable knit sweater with jeans and felt great in it. I loved that feeling! It is when you feel thin, almost like you are so excited, it is bubbling over, yet it is very scary. I think this is a crucial time and I have had this feeling before. It is a dangerous time. I still haven’t decided if at this point you are over confident or do you attack yourself at this point because you don’t think you deserve it? This is exactly where it’s gone wrong before. You’ve put in all that hard work and you are so excited about wearing all those neat clothes and you feel good hiking. On that trip, I started cheating. You don’t think you will ruin it, you are feeling on top of the world. However, you get that “taste” and that is dynamite! I gained 9 ½ lbs on that trip. I got back with it and almost lost it all back by June, but then the next summer vacation started. So now I blow it again and the scale starts climbing some more. By the time I got back from my long vacation in 2005, I am up 16 lbs. I lost back some, but not all of it and then we went for another boating trip for a week over Labor Day Week. By the time I get back, I am up again. This continues. Then I started trying other diets. I go back to Atkins, but I added too many low-carb treats (such as Dreamfields Pasta, low-carb muffins). Then I start thinking Atkins wasn’t working for me anymore. Now I think it was because I had started eating the “high society low carb way” and then blowing it in between and it all adds up. You don’t get anywhere!! I have now read that you should keep those low carb process foods (muffin mixes, cakes, etc) for maintenance. From going over my successful times, eating the basics (protein and lots of vegetables), you lose the best. Long story short, it is now January 2008 and I have gained back almost 60 pounds.
Low fat diets work for so many people and the media claims it is healthier, but when I do it, I can’t stop with the carbs, especially bread. Next thing I know it, I am off the diet and eating sweets too. Carbs make me feel bloated and I have indigestion when I eat them. I end up on pig-out sessions, which can last days, all by myself eating ice cream (my favorite food) and other sweets—driving from one bad place to another--very self-destructing! Then I hate myself. Atkins is the best way for me to eat. My husband also loves that way of eating and knows the plan well (he can eat more carbs than me and drink low-carb beer, but he still likes the WOE). Since I have proven to myself that Atkins does work, you do lose your cravings, and I do love quantity-I am choosing Atkins as my WOE. I started reducing my carbs the day after Christmas, I didn’t even want to wait for the New Year and make matters worse. I have been reading this website and feel encouraged. I am ready to lose this weight and this time, keep it off. That is when I will really need encouragement! (I need it now too) I am now ready to start Induction and Atkins as my WOE.
