  • New to the Board

Hi! I have never posted on a bulletin board, so I hope I am doing this correctly. Where do you put your tickers and weight information? Does it go in the signature?

I am 57 years old, female, happily married and happily retired! After reading this website for awhile, I have finally got up the nerve to make a post. The hardest part is putting down a weight, it’s no longer private. I never tell anyone how much I weigh. I hate people to know my weight, fat or thin; however, I admire all of you for your posts, so I am going to do it!

Here’s my story, I hope it’s not too long, but I think it is important for me (and hopefully others) to write (or read). I have been off and on diets the majority of my life. I went on my first diet in junior high school. Over the years, I have been successful sometimes, but only at losing, not at keeping it off for long. The older I have got, the more I have needed to lose. You name it, I have tried it.

In January 2004, I talked my husband (who has less of a weight problem, but had gained some in recent years) into trying Atkins with me. Atkins was starting to become popular again and a friend had said they might try it. Why not? Little did I know, this would become the best thing we did for ourselves.

We started January 11, 2004. I was down 9 ½ lbs in two weeks and 15 lbs. in a month. By April I was down 40 lbs. We were determined by now and never cheated. We felt good and did not crave carbs at all. If we went to a party or a get-together, we brought low-carb snacks such as cheese or shrimp. We both encouraged each other. Other people gave us a bad time, but we hung in there. I took an early retirement in September 2004 and was down 80 lbs. I wore a dress to my retirement party and felt great. I hadn’t had a dress on for years. My husband had gone down two pants sizes and felt great. By now, people are asking us for a copy of the Atkins diet rather than making fun of us. After one year of doing Atkins, I had lost 88 lbs. It was getting much harder now to lose any weight. In May 2005 I was down 97 pounds. We went to the San Juan Islands with friends in our boats. I can still picture myself in a snug, short white cable knit sweater with jeans and felt great in it. I loved that feeling! It is when you feel thin, almost like you are so excited, it is bubbling over, yet it is very scary. I think this is a crucial time and I have had this feeling before. It is a dangerous time. I still haven’t decided if at this point you are over confident or do you attack yourself at this point because you don’t think you deserve it? This is exactly where it’s gone wrong before. You’ve put in all that hard work and you are so excited about wearing all those neat clothes and you feel good hiking. On that trip, I started cheating. You don’t think you will ruin it, you are feeling on top of the world. However, you get that “taste” and that is dynamite! I gained 9 ½ lbs on that trip. I got back with it and almost lost it all back by June, but then the next summer vacation started. So now I blow it again and the scale starts climbing some more. By the time I got back from my long vacation in 2005, I am up 16 lbs. I lost back some, but not all of it and then we went for another boating trip for a week over Labor Day Week. By the time I get back, I am up again. This continues. Then I started trying other diets. I go back to Atkins, but I added too many low-carb treats (such as Dreamfields Pasta, low-carb muffins). Then I start thinking Atkins wasn’t working for me anymore. Now I think it was because I had started eating the “high society low carb way” and then blowing it in between and it all adds up. You don’t get anywhere!! I have now read that you should keep those low carb process foods (muffin mixes, cakes, etc) for maintenance. From going over my successful times, eating the basics (protein and lots of vegetables), you lose the best. Long story short, it is now January 2008 and I have gained back almost 60 pounds.

Low fat diets work for so many people and the media claims it is healthier, but when I do it, I can’t stop with the carbs, especially bread. Next thing I know it, I am off the diet and eating sweets too. Carbs make me feel bloated and I have indigestion when I eat them. I end up on pig-out sessions, which can last days, all by myself eating ice cream (my favorite food) and other sweets—driving from one bad place to another--very self-destructing! Then I hate myself. Atkins is the best way for me to eat. My husband also loves that way of eating and knows the plan well (he can eat more carbs than me and drink low-carb beer, but he still likes the WOE). Since I have proven to myself that Atkins does work, you do lose your cravings, and I do love quantity-I am choosing Atkins as my WOE. I started reducing my carbs the day after Christmas, I didn’t even want to wait for the New Year and make matters worse. I have been reading this website and feel encouraged. I am ready to lose this weight and this time, keep it off. That is when I will really need encouragement! (I need it now too) I am now ready to start Induction and Atkins as my WOE.

Hey Gunnadoit! Welcome to the ADBB! Your story is alot like mine. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember and have tried every diet under the sun. Atkins is the only thing that has ever worked for me. Like you, my first time around on Atkins, I did everything by the book, was losing loads, and felt on top of the world. I lost 70 pounds in all. But then I moved to a new city, started a new career, and lived alone. In one year I gained every bit of it back plus some! This time I'm determined to make this a lifetime WOE because I know the consequences if I don't. I'm glad you found your way here to the ADBB. You will find so much support and encouragement along your journey. Thanks for sharing your story. I look forward to seeing you around the board.

Hiya and welcome Gunnadoit! Thanks for posting your interesting story. Many of us empathise with you and know exactly where you're coming from. The very cool part is that you've decided that Atkins is to be a way of eating rather than just a diet. That's the very best way to permanent success.

Good luck on your Atkins journey.

Welcome to the board! What an informative first post, thanks for that! As you already know, eating this way works. I encourage you to join some challenges, open a journal chat for yourself and do whatever it takes to become active on the board. It's the best way to make friends and stay on track.

                Re: New to the Board

Good morning! Thank you so much for all your replies and support! I was surprised. I need to roam around the board a little more, but I am thinking about joining the journal chat. I have been doing well. I went for a walk yesterday morning (the snow is finally disappearing and I didn't have to worry about slipping), I ate on plan, but I need to work on the water. I like water, it is just getting back into remembering to drink it often.

Liz, I read a lot of your journal and we do have a lot in common (not that we all don't have a lot in common). I come from a family of diabetes. My Mom is a juvenile diabetic. She is very disciplined (which I applaud her for, but it didn't rub off on me, maybe had an opposite effect) and at 84 she still has all her limbsl, can see, etc. I also had an early weight embarassment. In 6th grade we all got weighed at school and the nurse was not quiet about it and I was over 100 then. I read your goals for the new year - they are great! You can do it. I also don't want to waste another year!

All of you are an inspiration and I will stay in touch. Thanks for the support!

Thanks for stopping by my journal. Stop by anytime and feel free to leave me a post. I love getting "mail" from you guys. lol I look forward to getting to know you more as we succeed on this journey. Keep in touch and definitely consider starting a journal. It's a great tool to just be able to chat about yourself, your day, and your journey towards weight loss. You'll make fast friends there.
