  • No excuses - done with kids

    Hello,

Well, I'm so thankful I found this site - just what I need to get me going and keep me motivated. There are so many successful people here...

I'm a 40 yr. old mother of 4 children (aged 9 yrs, 8 yrs, 2.5 yrs. & 1 yr.). I'm also in my final year of medical school - year 6 of a 6 year program. I also work part-time as an adjunct prof. I'm Canadian although we are currently live in Slovakia in Central Europe. This year I must graduate from medical school and re-write all of my medical licensing exams to be able to practise in the States.

It has been a long and stressful haul over here and I'm getting so excited to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Still, my days are lived in a shadow cast by my weight (currently 214) and I need to resolve this issue that causes me so much stress and mental anguish on a daily basis - it's hard to understand how much my weight brings me down unless you too, have been in that boat.

Lately I've tried to start induction but end each day with toast wt honey and peanut butter... I find that once I can get past the first 3 days I'm good to go, but I think I'm ready this time.

I've done Atkins before - about 2.5 years ago until I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I got down to 170 and was starting to feel great, but I just couldn't get enough solid information to keep going on the diet while I was pregnant. Anyhow, I'm done with kids and have no excuses. I also think this term I will have a bit more time to work in exercise which is a key component.

I'm doing a few things differently this time:
    1. exercise
    2. a clean (I love that expression) induction
    3. i've printed out the induction foods list
    4. joined this site for encouragement and accountability
    5. AND I've resolved to weigh myself only every other week (I find that a negative reading affects my willpower and brings me down - I hope this time period is enough to see a downwards trend)

So, that's it. I've organized my ticker and some mini-goals. I also dragged out an old pair of track pants and some brand new nikes (bought about 2 years ago with good intentions) and a new sports bra (also bought but never used).

My day tommorrow will be surgery starting at 7.30 then when I'm done I will hit the gym and then the library. Wish me luck!

I am done having children also. I have a 10, 6, and 4 yr old. I have been struggling with weight for about 10 years now. I started Atkins on Jan 1st. I was 164. I weighed in today at 161. My goal is 115 which I think is OK on a 5 ft 3 frame. I weighed about 105 before kids so I have a really hard time being heavy. I think joining this board will make much difference for us. Good luck to you!!!!

Welcome aboard! I got a laugh out of your thread title: No excuses - done with kids. LOL Sounds like you are getting rid of the kiddies like we rid our fridge and pantry of carby foods! I love kids, so I'll give you my address and you can pack 'em up and ship them to me!

You have achieved quite a lot over the years, what with giving birth to four children while going to medical school. That proves you have what it takes to better your health and lose the excess pounds and just feel better in general. My hat is off to you!

          Sunny!

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Warm welcome aboard! Good to have you with us.
It seems like you have a good action plan in place. That's really cool, because planning is all important. You're sure to be successful if you plan ahead of time (particularly when eating away from home) and always have a legal snack to hand for emergencies.

Looking forward to seeing you around the board. Happy losing!

Re: No excuses - done with kids

              Hello,

I'm so excited to get 'mail' here. How great! No, I love my kids - but sending them packing is definitely tempting today... - the last day of a 3+ week Christmas break! There is no snow here in Slovakia, just rain and gray and there is nothing for them to do. I really miss all the parks and facilities that we take for granted while in North America. Life in Eastern Europe has been a daily challenge that's for sure.

Re: portable snacks. Great idea. I need to do this.

I must tell you about my first trip to the gym - well I have this great, brand new sports bra and I get to the gym today (yeah!) and I couldn't get it on!!! Only the first hook would hook. I can't believe my bra didn't fit! Anyhow, I did a 45 min. walk/run with my regular bra. What a sight. My knees hurt, my fat was bouncing, it was just a terrible sight, but I tried to see the humour in it. I tried not to concentrate on all of the svelte people there. The Slovak girls are very thin and beautiful - obesity isn't a problem here as it is as home.

I'm doing a 4 min. walk, 1 min. run in 5 min. segments for 45 minutes. I will gradually shift the walk to 3.5 min and run 1.5 min etc. continuing to up the run and decrease the walking part of the 5 min. segments for 45 minutes. This should get me up to a slow 45 min. run over the course of 6 weeks or so. Anyhow, that's the plan.

The gym is expensive here! $4/trip. Better be worth it!

              Thanks for your notes. S-

Hey peacefuljourney! Welcome to the board. You got me thinking, are we ever done with children? Mine's 22 and still lives at home!!!!!!!!!!

How great that you're already going to a gym! It will be worth it because when you move your body while eating this way, our excess goes away quicker!

And yes, stock your purse with snacks so you don't get hungry during the day.
