  • New to this board-2nd time Atkins

HI, My name is Karen. I am 48 and tried Atkins about 5 years ago. I did quite well on the plan--in fact, my husband and I did it together and each lost about 40 pounds. My husband had a heart attack in 2004 and had a right coronary stent placed...after our doctor found out we were on Atkins, he insisted that this was the reason for my husband's heart trouble and implored us to quit. We did and we both gained every pound back--and I added on an additional 5 pounds. Nothing I tried has worked since that time. I am now up to 170 pounds and am only 5'3". After reading an article in the paper this week praising the Atkins plan over other weight loss plans, I decided to try again. This is my second day of Induction. I am having the familiar symptoms of headache, fatigue, irritability, thirst and ravenous hunger. I am sure it will be better tomorrow.

That is about it--thanks for having me

Re: New to this board-2nd time Atkins

    Hi Karen

I'm sorry to hear about what happend to your husband, and I hope he is doing better.

I to was on Atkins in 2003 and yes it did work for me then too.I'm sure if I hadn't have run into money troubles and struggled so much to keep food in the house for my two boys, I would have been able to afford to keep feeding myself so I could still do Atkins.

I have hit my heaviest weight to date and I'm not even pregnant! So I decided it was time to get back on the horse and do this one last time.

It's my second day today on induction as well. I have drank so much water today (so far 96oz to be precise) I was having huge craving's ealier for a sandwich lol.. not just any kind.. there's WHITE bread in the house! I wanted a fresh white breaded turkey breasted sandwich with mustard and margerine! hahaha Ohh how bad is that! BUT.. I never gave in, even my other-half helped me to find something to eat for dinner quick so I wouldn't fall to temptation.

I know it's very hard to kick some of our habbits, but I also know the reward in the end is so worth it! One baby step at a time.. we all need to hold hands (then they won't be free to stuff our faces ) and help one another get to the finish line.

Good luck, and know I'm pullin for yah in this corner Karen.

Re: New to this board-2nd time Atkins

Thanks so much sassy! It is nice to know that i am not alone in this quest to lose weight and feel better about myself. LIke you, I drank a ton of water yesterday and I have noticed that I am extremely thirsty all the time. The cravings are hard, aren't they? I have celiac disease and I never thought I would say this, but I am craving my gluten free bread! That's pretty funny since it took me such a long time to get used to eating it. I am pretty much a carb-freak. Some days I would have tortilla chips and melted cheese for lunch...guess that wasn't such a good thing. I also was used to having ice cream at night...last night was tough. My husband and i were watching a movie and instead of eating popcorn and candy, I chewed sugarless gum and drank ice water. I thought I was going to go insane but I didn't and today, although I feel tired and happy to report that I lost my first pound. This is day 3 of Induction--
I am rooting for you too Sassy and hope you make it through your cravings!

welcome Karen ! i have found when i have a sweet craving that sugar free jello is a God send ! the only problem is waiting for it to jell... (freezer works wonders) and sugar free gum has saved me a time or two also.. keep up the good work and i also read the wonderful articles in the news last week and did a silent little happy dance as i also have heard the "atkins is bad for you" talk lately ...

Great idea--I had forgotten about the sugar free jello. I'll have to pick up some of that tomorrow. The sugar free gum is helping me right now as I am watching my son and husband eat ice cream!

                Hi Karen,
I am also new to the board. I started Atkins on July 8th and have since lost 15 lbs. (YAY!) I was actually dreaming that I was eating ice cream. What I found that really helped my sweet tooth was warming up an ounce of cream cheese for about 15 secs in the microwave and then stirring in a half packet of splenda and about 1/8 tsp of unsweetend cocoa powder (the kind you bake with) and it tasted just like whipped chocolate mousse yogurt. It was enough to satisfy my craving and made it so much easier knowing that there is something that I could eat that seemed like I should not be. It was so good I was acutally feeling guilty the next day!

OMG! That sounds really good! I have to run to the store today to stock up on eggs and turkey bacon (I hate regular bacon) and I am going to pick up some cream cheese. Thanks for the tip. BTW-Splenda does not agree with me, anyone here try stevia instead?

WHAT?!?! No offense, but does your husband still have the same doctor? My mom's brother (aged 57) drove himself to the hospital on his way to work last year because of chest pain. He ended having a quintuple bypass, and his doctor insisted he start an Atkins type plan right away. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to stick with this kind of WOE, and has had to have another stent put in since then. It's just so frustrating that the medical establishment is all over the place with regard to controlled carbohydrate eating. More and more are seeing the light, though! Thankfully, both my GP and GYN understand Atkins and am thrilled that I have been able to stick with it.

                    Best of luck to you!

Thanks Mitzi! NO, thank heaven's we do not have the same doctor for him. Long story, but my husband was severely injured in a home improvement store and ended up needing 9 fusions in his neck. During the course of recovery, his doctor ended up putting him on 5 anti-depressants which made him unable to function. when we realized what was going on--we confronted him and he pulled him off everything cold turkey. he nearly died. We are investigating a possible malpractice suit for that and a few other things this crackpot had done to him.

Sorry about your uncle being unable to follow the plan--I hope he can find something to help him!

By the way, you look fabulous!

that is SO infuriating! what caused his heart attack would have taken longer to develop than the time you guys were on atkins!

exactly! This guy would rather my husband take lipitor and all that other crap, rather than to follow this plan. Thankfully, his new team of doctors is much more in tune with his conditions. I do wish my husband would go back on Atkins, but he seems to be losing pretty well on his own.

Good luck on your second time around too! We have to all stick together.
