  • Coming Back

Hi, I recently, from about last year this time till about Christmas lost from 185 down to 155. Waist went from size 38 to 32. I am male, 5'7" and ... I used Atkins primarily. I have done this before as well. I seem to be repeating something that is bothering me though. I allowed myself alchohol and have gained back up to 165#. 155 seems like a very nice weight. I am not heavy at 165 either, but ultimately I think 148 would be optimal, but 155 was ok too.

Toward the end of my continual success, I did add in carbs and kept low portions. My fault lied in drinking which somehow kept me from keeping portions low. I had been doing a good job after losing weight using portions control but it takes stick tuitiveness to do that. I did like the idea of ordering a doublestack at wendies or doublecheeseburger at Macdonalds and NOT tearing the bunn off. And it was OK to do that if I had only ONE.

My diet consisted of bacon and eggs for breakfast. Peanuts throughout the day as snacks, and one doublecheeseburger or small chili for lunch. I then would eat whatever my wife was cooking but not eat too much of it. This worked, but then it started failing me.....

Also, I don't know if its mild depression or what, but I had stopped exercising. I had been lifting a little and doing chinups and dips. I was able to do 8 chinups. Now I can probably do four... so need to get back into lifting.

So now that I have gained ten lbs (even though my wife can't see it and I still wear the same size clothes) I want to stop the rise in weight and get back down to 155.

well today I have behaved as far as atkins goes having sausage, eggs, cream cheese peanuts and avocado. Now the trick will be avoiding overeating for dinner... then if I can continue like this, I should be ok.

    Hi subdued,
Assuming that you intend to start with induction, the peanuts are forbidden. They aren't allowed until rung 3 of the OWL phase.

Congrats on taking charge just 10 lbs over your acceptable limit. Many of us wait a lot longer.

    Mini-goals (started 9 MAR 09)

    3. 203 lbs (10 AUG 09, 75% complete, < USAF max weight, > 50 lbs lost)

      Re: Coming Back

what I have found re: peanuts is i get right into ketosis. The carbs in peanuts are mostly fiber. Plus, peanut oil is a supremely good oil like olive oil. The last time when I lost on atkins years ago, I had been eating peanuts. i got my weight down and had a blood test to get reduced rates on insurance. I was told by the insurance company that they had never seen such high good cholesterol. Mine was 99. She loved my cholesterol. I said, well thats cuz my diet is steak, eggs, cheese, butter... she didn't want to hear that... and said... no, its your genetics. Well no matter what, the medical community will not believe in this but I know from experience.... My wife has high cholesterol and tries to control it by avoiding all the same foods that I eat .... because she listens to a doctor who doesn't know what he is talking about imo.

Well, it probably is genetics more than anything else, but nevertheless, if you eat peanuts you aren't starting with the induction phase, because they aren't allowed. You're starting with the OWL phase. I am an amateur, but I would just do the induction exactly as prescribed. I didn't eat enough veggies and I plateaued immediately until I started following the instructions exactly for the induction phase.

          I couldn't have said it better, J.R.

There's no getting around it - if you want to be successful in the long run, you have GOT to start eating veggies. If you're doing Atkins, at least half of your carbs should be in the form of veggies (no matter what phase you are in). If you're skimping on veggies, you're just doing a lowcarb diet of your own making... Dr. Atkins was non-negotiable when it comes to veggies.

As you can see from the stats in my siggie, I have had to do this more than once to get it right. And on that first time, I think the main reason I strayed from the Atkins path is because I hated veggies and never made myself break out of my box and try to incorporate them. I got the majority of my carbs from dairy and nuts. Sure, I was able to lose some weight... but I never made goal and wasn't able to maintain the loss that I did have. This time around, I followed the plan to the letter and tried tons of veggies. And what do you know... I found out the Atkins works better than "Mitzkins". Who'd have thought?

            Re: Coming Back

Welcome back, subdued! It's good that you're getting control of your eating habits so soon but you really do need to try and do a clean induction. That means more veggies and holding off on the peanuts and alcohol until you are on the proper rungs of OWL.

When you drink alcohol, your body burns it first and ignores the food you eat so that's why you gained weight when you started drinking so it's best to stay away from it. And peanuts can be very salty which makes you retain water.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
