  • Hellooooo =D

    Hi everyone,

My name's Sarah and I'm a 29 year old married mother of one.

I've half-heartedly tried the Atkin's diet quite a few times, but always fell flat a couple of days into it for lack of variety! I love food--I enjoy cooking it, trying new recipes, and, above all, eating it! I don't care too much for junk food (like chocolate bars, sweets, crisps, etc) but I do enjoy home-baked treats upon occasion. I've been overweight most of my life--I think from about the age of 8 or so. I was born in the States and lived there until my early 20's and my family, especially my gran, could cook the most awesome, breaded, deep fat fried meals you could ever imagine! I would guess that's 90% of my problem as I brought that legacy with me to the UK and until recently was still cooking those awesome foods.

I've been about the same weight for 6 years, neither losing nor gaining which I find really weird because I go through phases where I'll eat loads of food and even junk, and then I'll go through phases where I can't be bothered to eat all that much. I went on a Get Healthy kick several months ago where I totally cut out anything bad and walked every day, did aerobics (which I detest) and I did this for 6 weeks and lost 1 whole pound . I went to my GP who gave me the 'you are obviously still eating too many calories and have too high expectations' lecture which made me so angry I tossed the diet out with yesterday's rubbish and went back to eating what I liked. My health stats are all good, blood glucose levels are great, bp's great, cholesterol is great...it's just my weight!

So, I decided to lose weight yet again and after reading up on different types of diets, I kept turning back to Atkins. I've got the latest UK book. I think it was written in 2003? And I started finding loads of very surprising recipes and marvelous ideas. I decided that I HAD to do this diet and yesterday my husband and I whipped up some of those Oopsie Rolls for the first time and they were great! They gave me hope lol. I'm doing quite well; this is the first time I've ever made it a week into Induction (and I tried this diet back in 1999 for the first time!) and I've lost 7lbs so far and haven't had much of a craving for anything.

Anyways, sorry for the Life Story! Nice to meet you

Hi! Welcome to the board. I am new to the boards as well. I noticed a lot of people suggest this site Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Recipes for recipes and I have made a couple of the recipes and was pleased. I want to wish you luck on your weight loss journey!!

      Thanks for the welcome!

The recipes definitely make all the difference don't they? I've just bragged to my mother that this has got to be the easiest diet I've ever been on. Of course, I told her I lost 7lbs, and she read it as 71 lbs and was all estatic lol, I hated to bust her bubble.

I can't imagine what you were eating that you say there was a lack of variety -- I have rarely eaten the same thing over and over and then only when I really wanted to. There is amazing variety on this WOE -- I hope you find more variety this time....

Here are some links that may help -- good luck

The Induction Acceptable Foods List can be found here:

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the Induction area

Be sure to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
        Filtered water
        Mineral water
        Spring water
        Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
        Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carb content)
        Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

Well, to be fair, one has to have a certain amount of imagination in this diet or it does tend to fall flat. It seemed to be one of the most common complaints I found when I was reading up on it (I read up on everything!) And it wasn't until I was married that I learned to cook properly! And now I love to cook, So, it's alot easier this time around because I can spice up stuff and make the meals more interesting. Plus, the recipes I've found are absolutely ingenious.

          Especially the Oopsie rolls
