  • New to Atkins

Hi Everyone. I'm new to the Atkins diet. I quit smoking almost 6 months ago and have gained 30 lbs. ARG!!! I never weighed more than 120 lbs. I am in the "Induction" stage. I know it's suppose to be for two weeks but I'm headed into the 4th week of this because I didn't know enough about it. I have only lost 3lbs. I didn't realize how strict this phase is. I continued chewing gum (remember I quit smoking) and eating a little sweets here and there. I've never had a potato, bread, pasta, etc but I have a tremendous sweet tooth. Anyway, I am starting all over again. No sugar in my coffee, nothing sweet at all today. This is really hard. Any suggestions to turn off my addiction to sweets?....Tana

    Re: New to Atkins

The real trick is to truly give up those sweet flavors (legal or not) for 2 full weeks. The only way to break that craving is to totally give it up and then when you add naturally sweet things back in at the appropriate time, your body is tuned in to how sweet those things really are instead of needing an artificially high level to satisfy the craving. Wish there was an easier way but honestly that is the best way to cope in the long term.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

      Re: New to Atkins

I eat colored peppers (red and yellow) they are sweet tasting. Jill is right, induction is the time to get rid of your addictions (sugar, regular coffee, sodas, etc) fortunately I never felt that induction was restrictive - I was amazed at the amount of food and types of food I could eat. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily (nothing added) - that will keep your metabolism up and will help with cravings. After you get into keotsis the cravings will subside.

Too bad you didn't know what you were doing when you first started - hopefully you got on the scale so you know where you started and took your measurements.

      Good luck --

I would recommend that you move up to Rung 1 as you give up the sweets. The extra veggies will help to keep you fuller and take the edge off your cravings. Good luck to you!
