    Hi everyone,

    Well, I just signed up for this site, I am a member, just signed up today. I am a 34 y/o female living in southern Nh, USA. I started Induction about a month ago for the first time in my life, and I guess I wasn't doin it completely correct, as I finally bought the Ketostix and am as of yesterday seeing a pinkish purple color.
    I kind of figured I would have to stay in induction for awhile, I seem to be pretty resistant to losing weight, blah, it's annoying. Hopefully the Ketostix will encourage me.

    I was never that interested in cooking so this will be a challange for me as far as cooking goes, but i'm sure i'll manage.


    I have been hearing a lot about Flax Seed so I bought some individual serving packets yesterday, but I have no clue what it's exactly used for ?! Anyone ?

    Welcome to the Atkins Board.

    Congratulations on your first month on Atkins.

    The 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) is the book we follow here. If you don't already have a copy it would be helpful for you to get a copy to refer to (
    www.amazon.com or www.half.com have inexpensive copies). At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html.

    Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin without iron (you should get enough iron with the foods you are eating on Atkins).

    Flaxseed is used in a variety of ways - I made a cookie and eat it. There are recipes on the sites below that use flax also (Muffin in a minute is one I believe). Just remember you need to drink plenty of water when you use flaxseed or you can become constipated.

    Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – something for everyone.

    Make a copy of this list

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

    The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

      OMG Overwhelmed !!

      OMG !! Thank you Carol for the welcome !! There is just *SO MUCH* info there. I am feeling quite overwhelmed. Thanks also for the flax info on constipation, I def would have gotten that as I need to push myself to drink enough water.

          Hi ronni,
          Welcome! I'm a newbie, too. The flaxseed actually helps process all the meat and cheese you'll be eating, and helps with constipation (a potential side effect of Atkins) but you have to have water with it, as mentioned above. Also, you need to grind the seeds to get the nutritional benefit (I use a coffee grinder), if left un-ground they stay intact in your body like tomato seeds. I buy whole seeds and grind as needed, otherwise they go rancid quickly.

          I got a great microwave muffin recipe from some low-carb site; I think it's called MegaMuffin: First, find a round plastic tupperware container, about 5 or 6 inches wide and 3 or 4 deep. Take 2 tablespoons butter, and butter the sides a little before dumping the butter in the bowl. Microwave the butter for 10 or 15 seconds to soften it. Take 1/3 of 1 ounce cube of cream cheese, add it to the butter and microwave for a few seconds until the cheese is soft but not cooked. Add 4 tablespoons of ground flax seed, one egg, one packet of Splenda, some vanilla (maybe 1 teaspoon) and at least one half teaspoon of your favorite spice (I use, cinnamon, allspice, pumpkin pie spice mix, cloves, whatever). Take a fork and mix vigorously (good exercise!) for one minute until the mixture looks creamy. Add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (NOT soda), and mix that in. Cut the remaining cream cheese into six or eight little dots, and push them into the batter. Microwave for 2 minutes. The batter rises over the cream cheese, and you have a yummy treat that will help you fight off those carb cravings. I thought these muffins were a little strange at first, but I've grown fond of them. They count as 3 carbs (Splenda, egg, cream cheese, baking powder; the flax seeds cancel themselves out because of the high fiber content). Hope this helps!

            Flax Seed & Constipation Q's

            Hi,

            I am assuming my packets of milled flax seed are already ground, right ?

            Also, I def do not have a constipation problem, almost the opposite, should I be getting occasional constipation ?

              No you should not be getting constipation. Some do. I never did.

                I buy the flaxmeal at Walmart (Bob's Red Barn brand) and keep it in the refrigerator - it has never gone rancid on me. If you are eating the proper veggies (2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup from the "other" veggie list) daily you shouldn't have any problem with constipation, especially if you are drinking enough water. (Once again, look over the information at the top of your post about the acceptable food list and amounts of water to drink daily).

                You say you're having the opposite effect of constipation -- so did I....in a day it will settle down and you'll be fine again.
