  • Hi everyone

My name is Debi, and I am totally new to this. I have never been part of a forum before, and have no clue how to navigate, so I'll need some help I think. I was diagnosed with diabetes a couple years ago, and at the same time, through an MRI found out I had something going on in my brain that will/could result in dimentia. I was told getting the diabetes under control will "cure" the dimentia. So, I went on weight watchers and lost 30 lbs, only to gain it back this past few months. I'm finding the program very difficult to stick with, so I'm going to try Atkins. I've read the book, I see the lists, and I hope it will be the ticket for me. But I know I'll need support and advice. My family is very very supportive, I have no worry about that. So, here I am, and I love to meet friends. Wish me luck all.

    Re: Hi everyone

Lot's of motivation there and help.
Sure we will help. Post on the board and join the fun. I think if you managed to post here, you have already figured out all or most of what there is to board navigating.

I think the problem with low fat - low calorie diets is that they are hard to sustain. Atkins can be hard to if you do not follow the programme and work on including some of the foods you excluded.

But glad to hear that you read the book and is ready to go.
    Are you starting today?

      Re: Hi everyone

Hi Liv, thank you so much for saying hello. No, I can't start it today, I need to get the proper food in the house and get acquainted with the program. I think I have a much older Atkins book, so I'm going to pick up the new edition and read that one to make sure I'm on the right track. I wanted to get in here and do some reading/research and maybe meet some folks too. I wrote down the list of acceptable foods for the first phase, so it shouldn't be a problem to "get with it" in a day or so. I do have a question though... I created a ticker, but I don't know how to apply it? How do I do that?

        Re: Hi everyone

        Wow 10 grand kids.
Yes the 2002 copy is a good one. And it is the one we follow here. Dr.Atkins New Diet Revoution. We call it DANDR for short.

Good work on planning. But then just jump into it.

about the ticker. It will tell you to copy a code (you will need the BB code)
You just copy that whole code into you signature

We usually only get 3 weeks of summer weather here, and that's what we are having now...it's really gorgeous... but with this comes fall, and it's now getting cold... not looking forward to winter, that's for sure.

Carole, thanks for the tips on diabetes group, I'm looking at it... also, I've had some fun looking at the 50's thread. Liv, nice to see you today. I've been home sick with a nasty flu since Monday, thus the reason I'm researching and not "working" on the plan... can't eat anything right now anyway. My day is good, despite being a bit under the weather - I'm sure my boss is freaking, but he came to work sick and gave it to me, so nanana... Hope you are all having a wonderful day too. I'm learning much and looking forward to putting it into practice. cheers

                              Re: Hi everyone

Hi Debi, and congrats on getting started.

Just thought I would throw out there that in decades past, I have also tried low cal, low fat, Weight Watchers, and probably several others. I never could stay with them for any length of time, though, mostly because I stayed HUNGRY too often. It's hard to stay with any diet when you feel like you are starving part of every day.

With Atkins, though, I honestly can't say I ever feel that way. And after the initial start up was over with, I have had no cravings for anything. Not that some things don't look good, they still do, but I don't feel like I can't skip it. If someone put a creamy sugary dessert or a nice piece of fresh baked bread in front of me right now, it would look and smell great and I would still have no problem saying "no thanks,". I find this diet gets EASIER to stay on the longer I am on it. I sure can't say that about any other diet I have ever tried in my life.

Best advice I can give to a total rookie is avoid things with aspartame (diet drinks, diet jello mixes, diet tea mixes, etc) and avoid most/all of those specialty products labeled for "low carb" diets (meal replacement bars and shakes, etc) - at least for the first few weeks until you get situated and can research about some of them on these boards. Keep it as simple as possible and just pick things specifically named in the "allowed induction foods". Those other things seem to trip up a lot of folks and stall their weight loss efforts, which would be really annoying when you very first get started. You can always selectively try some of them out one at a time a little later and see if they stall you, too.

Best of luck, have patience, it does work if you work at it a little and try to do your best. And ask questions - people here have been very helpful to me several times over the past month when I was in need of advice.
