  • New Today INDUCTION I will do it!

Good Afternoon everyone. I have just signed up to the forum because I am getting dangerously close to eating a box of muesli and it looks like you're all climbing the same mountain.

This is my day 5 of INDUCTION and I am really going to do it this time - despite the muesli based hallucinations. I have been on every diet (nearly) around. My favourite is the GI with all that lovely brown rice, porridge and wholemeal bread - which I mustn't think about now and on which I have never lost an ounce. My problem is that I hate sugar and junk food: I only eat fresh food, I exercise vigourously (cycle 15 miles most days - go to gym at least 3X a week), I walk everywhere and I have a HIGHER than average metabolism and yet I am obese (BMI 31) and I look like a dedicated doughnut eater with v. big tummy.

So, last week, when I was contemplating a 85 mile bike ride as a punishment for my fatness, I realised something. This isn't working. The government says 'eat 5 fruit & veg a day' - I eat 10, the PCT says walk and cycle - don't drive - I do I do, the magazines say 'have you tried home cooking instead of takeways' (erm yes!) and I have discovered that you can do all of these things and still be a wobbler.

So, despite the low fat high fibre mantra that shapes my thinking I am going to give my all to the Atkins. I am on day 6. I have already lost 9lb (which is an astounding miracle). I think the food is OK as you can have salad and avocados - and I am hopeful!

I would love to hear how you are all getting on and any tips for mashed potato and muesli cravings gratefully recieved.

Must dash now and have my afternoon olive

    XX Emseee

Cauliflower is the usual potato substitute. It can be mashed, roasted, baked, etc.

You can check here for ways to make it:

I've never had a muesli craving, so can't help you there.

Re: New Today INDUCTION I will do it!

Day 6 is great - and losses are wonderful. Congratulations.

I think what helps me stick to it is that I understand that certain foods are like poison in my system - all they do is trigger responses that make me fatter and make me eat more. I know this is true because having really been off them for so long and them tried some of them in moderation I know what power they have. I have embraced low carb and high fats. And I believe in them. Not only do they show result but they have stabilized my eating in a way no grain could every do before.
I hope you can find your strength there. Keep up the good work

Warm welcome aboard and thanks for telling us your story... in such a witty way, I might add. Congrats on your success so far!
Keep a high fat snack handy for when the cravings hit. That really helps. It could be leftover cold meat, cheese, avocado, or... you could always be uber daring and convert your single afternoon olive into two!!

        Happy losing!

Thank you for your warm welcome Sally Seachange. I must say you look inspirationally good in your picture and very toned. It worked for you evidently!

Thanks Liv. I think that is so right. The carb foods you think you need can leave you feeling edgy, bloated and hungry for more. I'm finding it hard to get my head around but the Atkins does seem to stabilise hunger most of the time in a way that jacket potatoes and bread rolls just don't. Are you still feeling well and good after 2 years of this approach?

Hmmm Thank you AtkinsGal08. Mashed cauliflower does sound v. tempting - and with butter too. I shall try it with tomorrow's roast chicken. I notice you have been here for a couple of years. Did you find the atkins really helped?

Well, I've been on maintenance for 4+ years, so I would say that yes, it has helped.

Hi Breeegal. Warm welcome aboard! Nice to have you with us.
You might like to see that there's a thyroid forum here at the ADBB: Thyroid - Atkins Diet It's always nice, I reckon, to hear from others with similar problems. Lots of tips to be had, hopefully.

You'll find the board a great place for support and inspiration. There's always someone around to lend a helping hand, if we get into difficulties.

A tip... If you post your introduction to a new thread (still in this forum), you'll get more personal replies.

Keep us posted on your progress... we're all in this together!

Re: New Today INDUCTION I will do it!

Here is a page of nothing but vegetable recipes -- check the cauliflower recipes -- I would have left long before if not for this page!!! It's a lifesaver.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and take a multi-vitamin. If you haven't already, read the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR).

The recipe sites will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- check them out! Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - eat enough vegetables - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily.
Many of us use www.Fitday.com to track our food so we know what our carb totals are for the day. It's important you know what you are eating and how many carbs you are taking in each day.

Thank you so much Carole. To be honest I was getting vegetable cravings too so this is just the resource I need to turn out some dishes to balance the protein. Your're right the whole water and green veg thing is vital to success with this. I think you would be pushed to keep going without really getting to grips with that. Well I did great things with cauliflower last weekend and I shall go through these links this weekend. Thanks v. much and good luck to you too - or is this a way of life to you now?
