I feel kinda weird writing this down, but here goes nothing!
Growing up I never had problems with my weight. I ate pretty much anything and was always at a normal weight. This caused me to develop very bad eating habits, especially a sugar addiction. Things didn't get bad until I got pregnant with my daughter a little over 4 years ago. While pregnant I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was put on the ADA diabetic diet, which made me rather unhappy as a sugar addict. I quickly stopped the diet post-pregnancy.
While pregnant I gained about 40 lbs. Since I breastfed the 1st year, I lost about half the weight. Then unhealthy eating habits and a negative reaction to my new form of birth control lead me to put the weight back on, with even more on top of that. I tried a to go on calorie restrictions a few times, but never had the willpower and true desire to stop.
Finally I got the wakeup call I needed to change my life. I am currently in my second year of pharmacy school. While learning about diabetes we had to check our blood sugar values three times a day. I noticed my blood glucose levels were a little high so I asked my doctor for a blood test. As I suspected, I was diabetic. Thankfully my before meals value was only 130, and my other readings were normal. My doctor decided to forgo putting me on medications to see if I could control it with diet and exercise. So here I am, trying atkins. I have been on it for four days. Last time I weighed myself I lost 2 lbs, but I decided that my weight will be a secondary goal. My health is much more important then how cute I look in a pair of jeans!
I feel that with this new motivation, I can stick to this diet. So far I have resisted the multiple offers of candy I have received. I even made my daughter popcorn without taking a single bit. I am taking it one day at a time.
