  • Hi, Newbie here...

I'm not entirely new to the concept of Atkins because I usually practice a high protein/low carb diet as a rule but I have gotten way off track this past year and although I don't weigh I know I have probably gained at least 12 pounds. I can tell by the way my clothes fit. (I don't weigh due to have an eating disorder years ago so weighing is a huge trigger for me). Anyway, I am still not a big person even with the weight on but my clothes are super tight and I just don't feel good about this size so it's time to get my act together, lose the weight and start exercising again. I am starting induction today and I look forward to learning new things and meeting other Atkins dieters here!

Keep in mind that Atkins is high fat. During Induction, about 60-70% of our calories come from fat.

I'll keep that in mind. One question I do have is about the mayo and butter and all that. It says on the acceptable food list that you need to keep in mind that a serving is one tablespoon....so does that mean one tablespoon of mayo/butter per day, per meal, or what?

Oh, one more question. If eggs are unlimited why does the induction food list say "one egg" for a salad garnish?

In what chapter is this? Are you talking about Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution?

Butter is not limited. Of course, you shouldn't eat a whole stick... but there is no limit set on it.

There is no limit on mayo either... but it has carbs, so make sure you count them towards your daily total.

I believe we are reading different books...

          DANDR 2002 says:
          Salad Garnishes

          crumbled crisp bacon
          grated cheese
          minced hard-boiled egg
          sauteed mushrooms
          sour cream

I don't have that book but will get it. I am just reading off the acceptable induction food list which I am guessing is out of date now?
            Acceptable Foods List

And what about cheese? I just read a post here about the Oopsie bread but since it takes 3 ounces of cream cheese I guess if you make it then that is your total allotment of cheese for the day?

            I'll go get the book.

              Re: Hi, Newbie here...

All right... I think I figured out where you've read that. It's the Acceptable Induction Foods list from Atkins.com, right?

They mention that a serving size of butter is 1 tbsp because, I guess, some people think it's fine to eat a whole stick of butter.

As for egg as a salad garnish... one egg is just the amount for which net carbs are given. But their numbers are wrong --- eggs have carbs.

This is the Acceptable Foods list from DANDR 2002: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

And check FitDay or the USDA database for nutritional values.

FitDay: FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal
              USDA: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Do you have a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002)? You really need this book.

"Out of date" is a mild way of putting it...

                  And what about cheese?
You can make Atkins Revolution Rolls. They use less cheese. The recipe is in this thread: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...pes-added.html

since it takes 3 ounces of cream cheese I guess if you make it then that is your total allotment of cheese for the day?
Almost. Cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day.

                  I'll go get the book.
In the meantime, read through the stickies here.

I whip more cream at once, not only 1-3 Tbs. Cream approximately doubles its volume when whipped (1 cup of whipped cream is 120 g, while 1 cup of fluid cream is 238 g). So 2 Tbs whipped cream means 1 Tbs fluid cream.

I would be going overboard since I have cream in my morning coffee?
I don't know how much cream you add in your coffee...

I think those are all my questions, finally!

The Induction food list on Atkins.com is incorrect in many spots ... foods aren't listed and carb counts aren't always correct.

Don't forget to eat enough vegetables (check the acceptable food list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html) - 2 cups from the first list and 1 cup from the 2nd list daily.
